Description

A SUSPENDING DEVICE The present invention relates to a device for suspending articles therefrom. In particular, the present invention relates to a hanger, more particularly, a foldable hanger.
Conventional clothes hangers are usually made of wood, steel wire or plastic and comprise a clothes supporting portion, the shape of which is dependent on the type of clothing to be supported, connected to, or being integral with, a hook portion. In use, clothing is supported by the clothes supporting portion of the clothes hanger and the hook portion enables the clothes hanger to be hooked over a rail or like member which may be located within a cupboard etc.
The problem associated with such conventional clothes hangers is that due to the shape of same, they take up a lot of space. This is particularly disadvantageous when one needs to pack such hangers into their baggage when travelling, that is, due to the shape of same they take up a lot of valuable space in the baggage.
According to the present invention there is provided a suspending device for articles comprising an article supporting portion connected to a hook portion wherein the article supporting portion and/or the hook portion is made up of sections, each section being connected to its adjacent section, such that when not in use the suspending device is foldable into a substantially compact member.
In a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a clothes hanger comprising a clothes supporting portion connected to a hook portion wherein the clothes supporting portion and/or the hook portion is made up of sections, each section being connected to its adjacent section, such that when not in use the clothes hanger is foldable into a substantially compact member.
In a preferred embodiment each section of the article supporting portion or clothes supporting portion and/or hook portion of the suspending device or clothes hanger respectively is pivotally connected to its adjacent section.
In another aspect of the present invention there is provided a clothes hanger characterised in that the clothes hanger is foldable into a substantially compact member.
The clothes hanger of an embodiment of the present invention, which is foldable, takes up less space than conventional clothes hangers and hence, is believed to address the problems associated with conventional clothes hangers outlined above.
Preferred, non-limiting, embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1A: is a front view of a first embodiment of a clothes hanger in accordance with the present invention; Figure 13: is a back view of the clothes hanger of Fig. 1A; Figures 2A-C: illustrates the clothes hanger of Figure 1 when not in use, i.e. in its collapsed form; igure 3: illustrates the opening of the clothes hanger o Figure 1; Figure 4: illustrates the folding action of tne hook of the clothes hanger of Fig. 1; .pa Figure 5: illustrates a second embodiment of a clothes hanger in accordance with the present invention, and Figure 6: illustrates a third embodiment of a clothes hanger in accordance with the present invention.
As illustrated in Figures 1A and 1B, a clothes hanger 10 in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention, comprises a clothes supporting portion 11 connected to a hook portion 12.
The clothes supporting portion 11 is substantially triangular and is made up of a number of sections lia, lib, lic, lid being pivotably attached to their respective adjacent section by a rivet hinge pin 14.
Once opened, the clothes supporting portion 11 is retained in the open position by a rivet stop pin 15 protruding from the surface of section lia of the clothes supporting portion 11. When folded, the rivet stop pin 15 is locatable within an aperture 16 provided in the section lid of the clothes supporting portion 11. As shown in Fig.
1B, the face of the protruding rivet stop pin 15 may be tapered to facilitate the opening and folding of the clothes hanger 10.
A hook portion 12 is connected to the clothes supporting portion 11 by a rivet hinge pin 14. The hook portion 12 is divided into sections 12a, 12b, 12c. Each section being attached to its adjacent section by a rivet hinge pin 14.
In order to facilitate the opening action of the clothes hanger 10, a link member 18 is pivotably connectable to section llb of the clothes supporting portion 11 and section 12c of the hook portion 12. Such link member 18 can also be attached to the back of section llb of the clothes supporting position 11 and section 12c of the hook portion thereby concealing same (not illustrated) .
As illustrated in Figure 13, rivet stop pins 17 protrude from the surface of sections 12c and 12B of the hook portion 12 and section llc of clothes supporting portion 11. These rivet stop pins 17 prevent adjacent sections 12b, 12a and 11d from pivoting about their respective hinge pins 14, so that when opened, the clothes hanger forms a conventional clothes hanger shape.
When opened, and in use, the portion of section 11a of the clothes supporting portion 11 which extends beyond rivet hinge pin 14, attaching section 12c of the hook portion 12 and section 11a of the clothes supporting portion 11, can be used to support a tie, belt or strap.
Additionally, such portion can be used as a handle to hold the clothes hanger 10 whilst moving same.
As illustrated in Figure 1B, a plate 21 is fixed to section 12c of the hook portion 12. Such plate 21 prevents section 11b of the clothes supporting portion 11 from slipping behind section 12c of the hook portion 12 when the clothes hanger 10 is opened, and locks section 12c of the hook portion 12 so that same is substantially vertical.
The angle of the end of section 12c of the hook portion 12 which abuts the edge of section 11b of the clothes supporting portion 11 is such that when the clothes hanger 10 is opened the section 12c of the hook portion 12 is substantially vertical.
As shown in Figures 1 and 13, the rivet hinge pins 18 connecting sections llc and lid, Ila and llb of the clothes supporting portion 11 and secticns 12a and 12b of the hook portion 12 are aligned. This facilitates the folding action of the clothes hanger 10, and the central hanging position thereof.
As shown in Figure 2C, the rivet hinge pins 14 connecting section lla and 11b of the clothes supporting portion 11 and section 12c of the hook 12 to section lia of the clothes supporting portion 11 have distance pieces fitted onto such rivet hinge pins 14 so as to allow the other sections of the clothes supporting portion 11 and the hook portion 12 to fit between them in the collapsed or folded position.
As illustrated in Figures 2A-C, the clothes hanger 10 is foldable to form a substantially rectangular compact member 20.
As illustrated in Figure 4, the hook portion 12 is foldable such that section 12a pivots about rivet hinge pin 14 until same is substantially parallel to section 12b.
Then the parallel sections 12c and 12b pivot about rivet hinge pin 14, connecting sections 12b to 12c of the hook portion 12, until same are substantially parallel to 12c.
The hook portion 12, now being substantially elongate, is pivotable about rivet hinge pin 14, connecting section lla of the clothes supporting portion 11 to section 12c of the hook portion 12, until same is substantially parallel to the folded clothes supporting portion 11 to form a substantially rectangular compact member as shown in Figures 2A-C.
As illustrated in Figure 5, a clothes hanger 10, suitable for use with skirts and the like, comprises a clothes supporting portion 11 and a foldable hook portion 12 in accordance with the present invention. Once again, and when not in use, the clothes hanger of Figure 5 is foldable to form a substantially rectangular compact member (not iliustrated).
As illustrated in Figure 6, a clothes hanger 10, suitable for use with coats, shirts and the like, comprises a clothes supporting portion 11 and a hook portion 12.
Once again, and when not in use, the clothes hanger 10 of Figure 6 is foldable to form a substantially rectangular compact member. Additionally, the clothes hanger 10 of Figure 6, is provided with connecting members 21a, 21b which enables the clothes hanger 10, when folded, to be connected to another clothes hanger 10 in accordance with the present invention.
Although the present invention has been described by way of example to a clothes hanger, it is to be understood that same can be used with any type of hanger or support device wherein the conservation of space and compactibility thereof is desirable.
