Abstract
The nose cone 1 is produced from materials that can be compressed or reduced in form during or after production and remain in their reduced state until some form of external stimulation is applied to return their original shape and dimensions, to provide a tight fit in a pipe. The nose cone is connected to a replacement pipe and the assembly inserted into a live or dead carrier pipe. The nose cone can then be located at any desired point in the carrier pipe. Stimulation is by current passed through an inbuilt heating element 4 that in turn heats up both a main body and tail of the nose cone by an electric cable passed through the replacement pipe. The nose cone may have an O-ring seal and/or fins, sealant may be provided.
Description
2332257 (1) Smart Nose cones During live or dead pipe re lining, some nose
cones used at present comprise of a body relying on external features in the form of fins or vanes to form a seal between the replacement pipe and the redundant existing pipe upon insertion. At present a propriety sealant is also introduced to provide a secondary seal within the redundant pipework.
With the introduction of advanced materials and technology the said nose cones could now be manufactured so they provide the minimum resistance on insertion and be sealant free if so required. They can also be used in conjunction with a propriety sealant if a situation requires it.
Smart nose can be produced from such materials and when stimulated regain their original dimensions and form and provide a tight seal in the redundant pipe.
To achieve this criterion the smart nose cones are produced from materials that can be compressed during or after manufacture and remain in a reduced form until internal or external energy sources in the form of heat - light -sound or other forms of stimulation are applied. These materials when compressed are said to retain a memory of its original form.
One embodiment of such a material is a heat shrinkable thermoplastic polymer having in its normal state an outer diameter greater than the internal diameter of the pipe to be replaced but slightly smaller than the internal diameter when reduced in dimensions externally by the said compression. Reversion to its original state is by either internal or external energy stimulation.
It has been proved that these materials when subjected to a known energy stimulus have predictable times to ensure complete reversion to their original state and dimensions.
The present invention relates to an apparatus comprising of such an abovementioned material that incorporates an inbuilt form of stimulation - one embodiment being an electrical heating coil. This coil is connected to a timed electrical source to provide the required energy input.
The body (1) comprises a large diameter hollow tubular section with a smaller diameter tail (3) produced from the above material in its compressed/reduced form.
Built into both the body and tail is an electrical heating coil (4). Connections left protruding from the tail (5) are for connecting to the said external electrical supply.
One embodiment of such a connection is male and female socket and spigot arrangement. One example being propriety male and female spade terminals.
(2) The bore of the body (2) can be sealed off if desired, by means of a plug (6). This can be either a frangible membrane or a plug that can be either pushed or pulled out.
If desired '0' rings, Vanes, Fins or other external forms of seal can be incorporated to the nose cone. In fact sealants can be injected into the replaced pipe by using propriety methods available. All these can be used to augment and compliment the sealobtained by the smart nose cone.
Various patents describe the renewal of gas pipes both live and dead with propriety nose cones and sealant systems the method described adds a novel dimension to all these systems.
The pipe to be replaced should be isolated and any glanding mechanisms fitted.
An appropriate length of replacement pipe should now be cut.
An electrical source - cable - should be pushed down the replacement pipe and protrude from the opposite end.
The terminals protruding from the tail of the nose cone should now be connected to the cable. These can take the form of spade type terminals with matching opposites on the cable.
The cable should now be gently withdrawn up the replacement pipe and the tail of the body connected to it. This can take the form of a push fit, welding with a clamp fitted to prevent reversion, adhesives or any other desired method, The complete pipe and nose cone assembly can now be inserted into the carrier pipe and the nose cone located in the desired position.
The cable can now be connected to an electrical power supply and current allowed to pass through the inbuilt heating coil in the nose cone.
After a predetermined heating time has elapsed the current can be terminated by either a time switch or by physical means.
A suitable cooling off time should now be allowed.
After the expiration of the cooling time the electrical cable can now be disconnected from the terminals on the tail of the nose cone by pulling the said cable out of the replacement pipe and severing the connection.
The smart nose cone will have now resumed its normal dimensions and form and have formed a seal in the redundant pipe.
