Abstract
A cog wheel cam 1 which allows a degree of lost motion in the drive mechanism between a lock cylinder key and the cog wheel cam. This allows the cog wheel cam to rotate less than the 360‹ rotated by the cylinder key.
Description
G i 2331784 COG WHEEL CAM WITH REDUCED ROTATION FOR LOCK CYLINDERS This
invention relates to a means of reducing the angle of rotation of a cog wheel cam.
Standard lock cylinders are used for operating many different types of locks. In some, the operation is as follows. The key is inserted into the cylinder and must then be rotated through 3600 before the key can be removed. This rotation operates the lock mechanism, to which the cylinder is fitted, via the cylinder cam. Cylinder cams are sometimes in the form of a pinion and are known as 'cog wheel cams'. These are used to operate locks on the "rack and pinion" principles.
It follows that the cog wheel cam fitted to the cylinder must move the rack a distance equivalent to the effective circumference of the cog wheel cam during one rotation of the key. It may sometimes be desirable to reduce the distance to which the rack is moved.
One method of reducing the movement of the rack is to employ a pinion of smaller circumference, but this method has limitations due to the drive mechanism required within the pinion.
According to the present invention means are provided in the drive mechanism between a cylinder key and a cog wheel cam which provide an amount of free rotation between the key and the cog wheel cam. This allows the cog wheel cam to rotate less than the 3601 rotated by the cylinder key.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 shows in perspective one type of lock cylinder fitted with a cog wheel cam.
Figure 2 is a section through a cog wheel cam showing one means of providing the "free movement" refered to above.
Refering to figure 2, the drive dog 2 is rotated by the key and in turn rotates the cog wheel cam 1. 3 is the space in which the drive dog 2 is free to rotate before it begins to rotate the cog wheel cam 1.
