Ball and roller bearings.- The balls or rollers d, Fig. 1, of bearings have hemispherical, involute or like gear teeth w which engage corresponding teeth on the races f, g. For a roller bearing the gear teeth which extend the whole length of the rollers may be bevelled at the ends for safety when running. The rollers may be made by twisting a square rod into a helix and bv cutting teeth thereon, and they may be expanded or have a spring temper so as to fit tightly with the races to avoid noise when running. As shown in Fig. 1 for a wheel, the races g, f are formed in sleeves secured in the boss c and on the axle e respectively. The races may be formed directly in the material of the boss and axle. Fig. 4 shows a bearing ball u having teeth w which gradually diminish in depth outward from the central plane of thebearing.
