Abstract

A pin and socket are interconnected by a clip 1 having inwardly-directed tangs 3 for engaging the pin, and outwardly-directed tangs 4 for engaging the socket. The arrangement is used for joining heels to shoes.

Description

METHOD OF INTERCONNECTING ARTICLES AND CLIS~EOR~USE S ME This invention relates to a method for interconnecting articles, and to a clip for use in that method. The preferred embodiment of the invention provides a method particularly suitable for interconnecting two plastics articles moulded from different plastics compound, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this application, and indeed is applicable to a wide range of applications where interconnection of two articles is required.
The present invention provides an economical and reliable method of securing together articles without the use of adhesives, and without the use of visible fastenings (for example staples) driven through one of the articles into the other.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a method of interconnecting two articles comprises: providing at least one pin on one of the articles; providing a socket in the other of the articles to receive the pin, the socket having a diameter larger than that of the pin; placing a clip over the pin,.,, the clip having at least one member which engages fs the pin to resist removal of the clip from the pin and at least one member which will resist removal of the clip from the socket; and inserting the pre-assembled pin and clip into the socket so that the second member engages the wall of the socket to resist removal of the pin from the socket.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a method of interconnecting two articles comprises: providing at least one pin on one of the articles; providing a socket in the other of the articles to receive the pin, the socket having a diameter larger than that of the pin; placing a clip in the socket, the clip having at least one member which engages the socket to resist removal of the clip from the socket and at least one member which will resist removal of the pin from the clip; and inserting the pin into the pre-assembled clip and socket so that the second member engages the pin to resist removal of the pin from the socket.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the clip is formed of steel. Preferably, the pin is substantially in the form of a right circular cylinder, and the clip is in the form of a split cylinder which, when pushed over the pin, will resiliently grip the pin.
Preferably, one end of the clip is formed with a tapered lead-in portion to assist entry of the clip into the socket. Preferably, the tapered lead-in portion is formed by radially inwardly deforming the material of the clip so that the deformed material strengthens the clip and reduces the risk of injury to an operative pushing the clip onto the pin.
Preferably, the or each member for engaging the pin is in the form of an inwardly extending tang deformed from the material of the clip. Preferably, the or each member for engaging the socket is an outwardly extending tang deformed from the material of the clip.
The above and further features and advantages of the invention will become clear from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein: Figure 1 is a side view of a clip for use in the present invention; and Figure 2 is an end view of the clip of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the clip 1 comprises a sheet of steel, for example, spring steel, which has been formed substantially into a right circular cylinder having a longitudinally extending slit 2. The material of the clip has been cut and deformed to provide two diametrically opposite inwardly extending tangs 3 and two diametrically opposite outwardly extending tangs 4. As illustrated, the tangs are substantially rectangular, but it is understood that other shapes of tang may be desirable, for example the tangs may be substantially triangular and terminate in a point to assist in their function.
The material of the clip has been inwardly deformed at one end of the clip to form a tapered inwardly directed flange 5. The flange provides a tapered lead-in region at one end of the clip and strengthens the clip against the formation.
The above described clip may be used to secure together two articles, one of which is provided with a pin and the other of which is provided with a socket.
The socket is sized, relative to the pin, to allow the clip 1 to be located therebetween with the inwardly extending tangs 3 engaging the material of the pin and the outwardly extending tangs 4 engaging the material defining the socket.
Accordingly, in use of the clip described above in the method of the present invention the clip 1 is pushed onto the pin to a suitable depth. The clip is sized so as to resiliently grip the pin, the slit 2 allowing resilient deformation of the clip as it is pushed home onto the pin. The free edge 6 of each radially inwardly extending tang 3 will then engage the material of the pin to resist the sliding movement of the clip off the pin in the direction opposite to that used to push the clip onto the pin. The pre-assembled pin and clip are then offered up to the socket and inserted thereinto. The tapered lead-in provided by the flange 5 assists in directing the clip into the socket. The socket is sized such that there is just sufficient clearance between the socket and the pin to accommodate the material of the clip. The free edges 7 of the radially outwardly extending tangs 4 will then engage the material of the socket to resist removal of the clip from the socket. Since the tangs 3 continue to resist movement of the clip off the pin, the effect of this arrangement is to retain the pin within the socket.
Preferably, the pin is an integral part of a plastics moulding which is to be secured to the article in which the socket is defined. In many instances, several pins will be moulded integrally with a single article, and each pin will be provided with a corresponding clip to engage a corresponding socket in the article to which the moulding is to be connected.
It will be appreciated that the above described invention provides a simple and strong connection between an article having a pin formed thereon and an article having a socket formed therein. The connection is formed without use of large machinery and without the use of adhesives. Although not limited to this application, the invention is particularly applicable to the securing of top pieces to heels in the footwear industry.
Traditionally, top pieces have been secured by way of staples (which are unsightly) or by providing the top piece with pins which are an interference fit with sockets provided in the heel. The latter method is unsatisfactory because either it requires the top piece to be moulded from a material which is hard enough to form pins which can be pushed into sockets with required force, or the pins must be separately formed and inserted into the mould used to form the body of the top piece.
This process is time consuming.
