Description
A Plastic Trim Member Fixing Assembly
This invention relates to a plastic trim member fixing assembly and in particular to a fixing assembly for securing a plastic trim member into the interior of a motor vehicle.
It is known to provide a fixing assembly for securing a plastic trim member into the interior of a motor vehicle in which the affixing assembly enables the plastic trim to be snapped into position.
It is a problem with such prior art fixing assemblies that no adjustability of the securing load is possible and therefore the plastic trim member often frets against the adjacent part of the body of the vehicle or moves in a manner liable to cause undesirable squeaks or rattles.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved fixing assembly in which the securing load is readily adjustable during assembly of the plastic trim member onto the motor vehicle.
According to the invention there is provided a plastic trim member fixing assembly for a motor vehicle, the assembly comprising a male serrated member for attachment to a plastic trim member to be secured to the motor vehicle and a female retainer member for locking engagement with an aperture in part of the body structure of the vehicle wherein the serrated member can be readily inserted into the retainer member but is prevented from extraction by interengagement of the retainer member with a serrated portion of the serrated member.
The serrated member may have a base portion for attachment to said plastic trim member and a shank portion extending away therefrom, the shank portion having a serrated outer surface for at least part of its length.
The retainer member may have at least one inwardly directed finger for locking engagement with the serrated outer surface of the serrated member.
The retainer member may have a recess in its outer surface for engagement with part of the body structure of the vehicle thereby to provide a means of securing the retainer member to said part of the body structure of the motor vehicle.
The retainer member may be an interference fit in the aperture in said body structure.
The retainer member has at least one flexible leg for use in securing the retainer member in the aperture in the body structure.
A free end of the or each leg may be provided with a foot having a heel portion and a toe portion.
The shank portion of the serrated member may have a tapered portion for engagement with the heel portion of the or each leg such that upon insert ion of the serrated member into the retainer member the or each leg is urged in an outwardly direction.
The tapered portion may have a recess formed therein into which the heel of each leg is engageable to temporarily secure the retainer member to the serrated member in a pre-assembly position.
Advantageously, the retainer member may have two legs on opposite sides thereof such that upon full insertion of the serrated member into the retainer member the two legs are forced outwardly such that the distance from the end of the toe of one leg to the end of the toe of the other leg is greater than the width of the aperture in the body structure through which the retainer member extends thereby providing a means of preventing disengagement of the retainer member from the aperture.
The retainer member may have-a flange at one end to prevent the retainer member from being pushed through the aperture in the body structure, the flange co-operating with the or each leg to hold the retainer member in position within the aperture.
The retainer member may be made from a resilient plastics material.
The tapered member may be made from a resilient plastics material.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Fig. 1 is a cross-section through a first embodiment of a plastic trim member fixing assembly according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section through a second embodiment of a plastic trim member fixing assembly in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 3 is a side view in the direction of arrow A on
Fig. 2 of a retainer member forming part of the fixing assembly shown in Fig. 2.
With reference to Fig. 1 there is shown a plastic trim member fixing assembly for a motor vehicle comprising of a male serrated member 12 interengaged with a female retainer member 14.
The serrated member 12 has a base portion 13 and a shank portion 15.
The base portion 13 is used to secure by welding or bonding the serrated member to a plastic trim member 11.
At the distal end of the shank portion 15 to the base portion 13 there is provided a serrated portion 16 the outer surface of which is provided with numerous serrations.
The retainer member 14 is rectangular and has two inwardly directed fingers 17 formed at one end thereof. At the other end of the retainer member 14 there is provided an outwardly directed flange 19 which is used to prevent the retainer member 14 from being pushed through an aperture 9 in the body structure 10 to which the plastic trim member 11 is to be secured. A recess 18 is defined between the flange 19 and the side walls 6 of the retainer member 14 which is used to secure the retainer member 14 in the aperture 9. The width of the retainer member 14 is such that upon insertion thereof into the aperture 9 an interference fit is generated which prevents the retainer member from becoming disengaged.
The fixing assembly is used in the following manner, a number of male serrated members 12 are attached by welding to the plastic trim member 11 that is required to be held in place. The positioning of the serrated members 12 corresponds to apertures 9 formed in part of the body structure 10 of the motor vehicle to which the plastic trim member 11 is be fixed. Into each of the apertures 9 a retainer member 14 is press fitted causing engagement of the recess 18 with the part of the body structure 10.
The plastic trim member 11 complete with the attached serrated members 12 is then offered up to the body structure 10 causing engagement of the serrated members 12 with the retainer members 14. The serrated portion 16 of each serrated member 12 engages with the fingers 17 on the retainer member 14 and thereafter the plastic trim member can be held in any position from the position when the serrated member 12 first engages with the retainer member 14 to a position when the serrated member is pushed fully home causing abutment between the flange 19 and the base portion 13.
In this way an adjustable connection between the plastic trim member 11 and the body structure 10 is provided which enables a secure fixing to be produced but will prevent fretting or relative motion between the plastic trim member 11 and the adjacent body structure 10 in a simple an effective manner.
With particular reference to Figs. 2 and 3 there is shown a fixing assembly comprising a male serrated member 22 for engagement with a female retainer member 24.
The male serrated member 22 has a base portion 23 and a shank portion 25 which extends away from said base portion 23 and has at its distal end a serrated portion 26. The shank portion 25 has two opposed tapering portions 34 each of which is provided with a detent or recess 33 part-way along the tapered surface.
The retainer member as shown in Fig. 2 is sectioned along the line 11-11 on Fig. 3 for clarity and to aid understanding. The retainer member 24 has an end flange 29 and a rectangular body section defined by end walls 35 and side walls 36. Each of the side walls 36 is provided at the distal end from where the side wall 36 is connected to the flange 29 with an inwardly directed finger 27.
Each of the side walls 36 has two U-shaped slots 37 therein each of which defines a leg 28. At the lower or free end of each leg 28 there is formed a foot 30 having a toe portion 32 and a heel portion 33.
The fixing assembly is used in the following manner. A like number of serrated members 22 are welded or adhesively bonded to the plastic trim member 11 to be attached in positions which correspond to apertures 38 formed in the body structure 10 to which the plastic trim member 11 is to be attached. A retainer member 24 is pushed onto each of the serrated members 22 such that the inwardly directed fingers 27 become engaged with the serrated portion 26 and the heel portions of the feet 30 become engaged with the detents 33 in the tapered portion 34. The plastic trim member 11 then has assembled to it all of the components necessary for it to be secured in position on the motor vehicle and this sub-assembly of plastic trim member 11 and fixing assembly 22, 24 is a very convenient and efficient method of providing a fixing means for the plastic trim member 11 in a high volume production environment.
The plastic trim member 11 complete with the fixing assembly is then offered up to the body structure 10 such that the body portion of the retainer members 24 engage with the apertures 38 in the body structure 10. The plastic trim member 11 is then pressed towards the body structure 10 causing the retainer members 24 to be pushed through the apertures 38 until the flange 29 contacts the body structure 10 as shown in Fig. 2. Further movement of the plastic trim member 11 towards the body structure 10 causes the heel portions 31 of the feet 30 to disengage from the recesses or detents 33. This disengagement urges the legs 28 in an outwardly direction causing the toe portions 32 of the feet 30 to become in overlapping engagement with the rear surface of the body structure 10.
In this position the distance between the ends of the toe portions 32 is greater than the width of the aperture 38 so that the retainer member 24 is secured to the body structure 10 by the co-operation of the feet 30 and the flange 29.
The engagement of the inwardly directed fingers 27 with the serrated portion 26 provide a means for adjustably connecting the plastic trim member 11 to the body structure 10 such that any flexible or resilient material interposed therebetween can be lightly compressed but not compressed to such an extent that its shock absorbing abilities are greatly diminished.
It will be appreciated by the man skilled in the art that the most convenient material for manufacturing the serrated members 12, 22 and the retainer members 14, 24 is a resilient plastics material but that, if required, other suitable materials could be used.
