Abstract

Tea-tree oil may be used in the manufacture of a medicament for prophylactic application to the female genito-urinary area for the prevention of cystitis. The oil may be formulated as a cream, ointment or lotion, or may be incorporated in a carrier. The carrier may be of textile material, or may be rigid enough for insertion into the entrance to the vagina so covering the urethra.

Description

PROPHYLAXIS AGAINST CYSTITIS The present invention relates to the use of a novel agent for prophylaxis against cystitis in women.
Cystitis is due to infection of the urinary system with bacteria, commonly E Coli or Kle6siella, or with a mixture of organisms in which these bacteria predominate. It affects women much more frequently than men.
Coliform bacteria are a normal constituent of the healthy human digestive system, and their presence elsewhere may be taken as an indication of contamination by sewage.
Normally they are not regarded in themselves as pathogenic and do not call for antiseptic measures. However cystitis may be caused when such bacteria reach the normally germ-free urethra.
The female genital area is highly sensitive, and care is necessary to avoid bringing into contact with it any substance, which may act as an irritant - the medical profession advises that even bath salts and perfumed soaps are to be avoided. This sensitivity precludes the use of common effective antiseptic or anti-bacterial agents.
I have now found that tea-tree oil, which is distilled from the leaves of Affielatelca nlrenlifolicr, is particularly effective as an anti-bacterial agent against F. Coli and Kiebsiella, and can prevent infection of the female urethra by these germs. It appears also to be virtually non-irritant, and has the further advantages that it is nowadays easily available and relatively inexpensive. The tea-tree oil is incorporated in a suitable carrier for topical application, with the addition of a diluent where appropriate.
Since the spread of bacteria to the urethra by sexual intercourse is a main cause of cystitis it is essential that application takes place within a few minutes before, or preferably within a few minutes after, intercourse, along with other normal hygiene routines.
The oil may be made up as a cream, ointment or lotion, or incorporated in a carrier, together with a diluent, if required, and optionally with additional active constituents, for example a deodorant. If it is to be used before intercourse a lubricant may preferably also be incorporated.
If a carrier is used it may be of soft textile material, such as lint, surgical gauze or cotton wool, or it may be thin and elongated, and sufficiently rigid for insertion into the entrance to the vagina, so covering the entrance to the urethra.
