Abstract
A cylinder head cover 1 for an internal combustion engine, to which may be attached an additional sound insulation cover 2, is sealed with the cylinder head (not shown) by an elastic seal 6 disposed on a flange arrangement 3 formed in the cylinder head cover 1. Laterally outwardly directed projections 8, 11 engage the sound insulation cover 2. Projections 8, 11 may be formed on the cylinder head cover (not shown) in the region of the flange 3 or on the seal 6. The projection 8, 11 provide, in this way a sound-tight and vibrationally decoupled fastening of the cylinder head cover 1 and the sound insulation cover 2 to the cylinder head.

Description
Cylinder head cover attached to a sound insulation cover .0 is The present invention relates to a cylinder head cover for an internal combustion engine, attached to an additional sound insulation cover, wherein the cylinder head cover is sealed statically relative to the cylinder head by an elastic seal disposed on an attachment flange.
A cover for cylinder heads of internal combustion engines is known which is fixed by screws to the cylinder head and is double-walled, the two walls being sealed relative to the cylinder housing by a single, onepiece seal (DE-OS 2 919 038).
In this known design the two walls are held at an approximately uniform distance from each other by spacers formed from soft elastomers and fixed to the walls by screws. In the region of the terminating edges of the wall sheets the seal, provided with suitable slots into which the terminating edges are snapped, holds the wall sheets spaced apart.
This known design requires a plurality of attachment and spacer parts, while the number of bores needed in the two walls imposes heavy demands on satisfactory sealing and insulation from solid-borne sound.
An object of the present invention is to provide a cover with an additional sound insulation cover attached thereto, which has a simple connection consisting of few individual parts, which is sound-tight and vibrationally decoupled The invention is defined by claim 1 hereinafter to which reference should now be made.
In a preferred embodiment. the two covers are fixed to one another by the projections on the cylinder head cover, which engage in corresponding recesses in the inner wall of the sound insulation cover, after the sound insulation cover has been fitted on. The projections and the recesses can run all round. The projections are preferably directed obliquely down, i.e. away from the bottom of the sound insulation cover, which allows simple sprung latching into the recess, and thus secure attachment.
In order to ensure the desired spacing of the sound insulation cover from the cylinder head cover, support surface means are preferably provided on the cylinder head cover and bear against complementary surfaces disposed on the inner wall of the sound insulation cover.
Preferably, the projections and/or the support surfaces are provided by the elastic seal effecting the static sealing, which is fixed on the attachment flange of the cylinder head cover. A unitary formation of these parts not only reduces the number of individual parts but also allows their manufacture from the same elastic material as the seal, so that a sound-tight and vibrationally decoupled attachment is created as well as satisfactory sealing.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, the sole figure of which shows a portion of the connection of a cylinder head cover to a sound insulation cover in cross-section in the region of an attachment hole for fixing the cylinder head cover on the engine block of an internal combustion engine.
A cylinder head cover 1, only a fragment of which is shown, covers the valve chamber of an internal combustion engine (not shown) and has a sound insulation cover 2. The cylinder head cover 1 comprises a surrounding attachment flange 3, which is provided with a plurality of attachment holes 4 for reception of attachment screws 5, through which the cylinder head cover 1 is fixed to the engine block of the internal combustion engine, not shown in detail.
The static seal between the cylinder head cover 1 and the engine block is effected by a seal 6 fixed to the attachment flange 3. The seal 6 consists for example of AEM (acrylethylene rubber) and has a sealing lip 7 protruding in the direction of the engine block.
The seal 6 is itself provided with a surrounding projection 8 pointing obliquely down, i.e. away from the bottom of the sound insulation cover 2. The projection 8 engages in a corresponding surrounding recess 9 in the inner wall 10 of the sound insulation cover 2. A further support 11 facing upwardly, i.e. towards the bottom of the sound insulation cover 2, is provided on the seall 6 and engages against a further recess 12 in the inner wall 10 of the sound insulation cover 2. The end surfaces 13 of the projection 8 and 14 of the support 11 fix the sound insulation cover 2 relative to the cylinder head cover 1 and retain the two parts at the desired distance.
Since both the projection 8 and the support 11 consist of the same material as the seal 6, a connection insulated from vibrations and solidborne sound is ensured between the cylinder head cover 1 and the sound insulation cover 2.
In the illustrated embodiment the seal 6 is also anchored in the attachment holes 4 of the wall of the attachment flange 3, i.e. an elastic element 16 is present between the stem 17 of the attachment screw 5 and the walls of the attachment hole 4, which serves to decouple the covers 1 and 2 from the engine block.
