Abstract

A large moulding is designed to replace the wedge shaped in-situ concrete extremity of any motorway or trunk road crash barrier. As the invention does not suffer from the usual constructional constraints associated with the concrete wedge, it may be installed without any excavation and foundation, or the need for purpose-made formwork. To give maximum warning, the invention will be produced in a coloured material and may be filled internally with granular material to give added weight and robustness; and to allow the internal intergration of crash barrier metalwork. The moulding may have fastening means to fix it in place.

BACKGROUND Crash barriers form an important safety function on our motorways and trunk roads. They are made up of heavy galvanized steel horizontal sections, bolted to vertical posts which are encased in concrete below ground. As an additional safety feature, the extremities of most crash barrier horizontal lengths are angled-down towards ground level, and the ends are capped by an independantly cast in-situ concrete wedge.
The disadvantages of an in-situ concrete wedge are: * A large excavation, for setting of its foundation in concrete below ground, is required.
* Above ground the final shape of the wedge is difficult to form in wet concrete without the aid of purpose-made formwork.
* The wedges are located at the start and end of long lengths of crash barriers, usually with some distance between them, therefore creating obvious constructional difficulties.
As a result of the aforementioned, it has been noted that the end product: sometimes suffers from "honeycombing", is at best neither uniform in shape and/or size, which ultimately results in a relatively high cost of construction.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL FEATURES This invention provides for a uniformly manufactured molding, designed to replace the wedge-shaped in-situ concrete extremity of any motorway or trunk road crash barrier, and made to be installed without any deep excavations, and the need for purpose-made formwork. In addition the invention: * Will ensure uniformity in this construction accessory * May be produced in a coloured material to give maximum warning etc * Will be of one design to suit all situations and consequently may be manufactured in one molding operation * May be designed to allow the internal filling of sand or a similar material to give added weight and robustness * May be designed to allow the intergration of metalwork from any crash barrier steelwork.
As a result of the aforementioned standardization, production costs may be kept to a minimum, which will enable the invention to be cost effective when compared with a site constructed concrete wedge.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION (1) A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG 1 - shows the galvanized crash-barrier sections with the invention in position.
FIG 2 - gives an indication of how the uniform shape of the invention will adapt to angular variations.
FIG 3 - shows a sectional view of the invention illustrating the minimal installation required.
FIG 4 - simple moldings details.
fftttttftXtXttttt With reference to FIG 1, the position of the invention (A) can be seen at the extremities of the crash barrier system where; (B) is the horizontal galvanised steel section, (C) is the angled-down galvanized steel section, (D) are the vertical posts set in concrete, all of which are in relationship to ground level (E).
XtXfXfttXtXtt*ttXtXtXt It has been found that the angle of nost crash barrier extremities vary from approximately 10 - 30 degrees, and as shown in Fig 2 the uniform shape of the invention accommodates these angular variations.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION (2) With reference to Fig 3, the intended installation would be: A. Dig a shallow excavation (F) to level or sloping profile, to allow the molded wedge body (A) to protrude through the ground level as necessary. Sand or similar material (G) is placed for final levelling - similar to the construction of that used for pavers or paved walkways.
B. Wedge molding placed in position and the 4 holding down pegs (H) driven through the holes (J) in the base-plate (K) into the undisturbed ground.
C. Mass concrete or similar (L) is then laid over molded wedge base-plate to give added weight, up to final top soil or granular stone surface level (M).
The invention has a variation in design allowing it to be filled with sand or similar material to give added weight and robustness.
tttftfsttttxltttttttt Fig 4 illustrates the simple molded wedge of one design and one molding to suit all configerations.
