Abstract
A package for a bottle comprises a top member 10 and a base member 20 of paper based material preferably paper pulp. The top member is shaped to receive and protect the top and shoulder of the bottle while the base member 20 has an indented ring to support the base of the bottle and members to support the side of the bottle with hollow spaces defined around the side of the bottle. The members 10, 20 are preferably nestable and are designed to crumple under impact. An outer box 14 is provided.
Description
1Paper Based Packaging for Transporting Bottles"
The present invention relates to paper based packaging for transporting bottles.
Conventional types of packaging for the transportation of bottles have consisted of either an outer carton with internal cushions made from Expanded Polystyrene, folded cardboard or an outer carton filled with vermiculite.
Disadvantages of these types of packaging include the following. The need for bottles to be sealed in plastic to prevent chemical spillage as these spilled chemicals could react with the expanded polystyrene.
Expanded polystyrene packaging is bulky and takes up a lot of storage space. Folded cardboard packaging is time consuming to construct and vermiculite is dusty and messy to work with.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the above disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided paper based packaging for transporting bottles and protecting said bottles from damage due to an impact, said paper based packaging comprising:
a shaped top adapted to secure the top of a bottle and to prevent damage to said top from an impact,
a shaped base adapted to secure the base of a bottle and to prevent damage to said base from an impact.
Preferably, said shaped base and said shaped top are constructed of paper pulp.
Preferably, the shaped base and top are formed in such a way as to enable multiple numbers of each to be nested together.
Preferably, said shaped top consists of an area to receive the top and shoulders of the bottle.
Preferably, said shaped top is provided with a downwardly extending section which comes into contact with and supports said bottle. This downwardly extending section defines a hollow space between the top of the bottle and the top of the shaped top.
Preferably said shaped top is provided with support members.
Preferably, said shaped base includes an indented ring to support the base of said bottle.
Preferably, said shaped base includes a plurality of support members to support the sides of the bottle.
Preferably, said shaped base is formed to provide hollow spaces between the sides of the bottle and the walls of said shaped base, and between the base of the bottle and the bottom of the shaped base.
Preferably, said hollow spaces in the shaped base and the shaped top are designed to allow the packaging to crumple and thus protect said bottle when impacted from a drop or protrusion.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig 1 is a perspective cut away view of a box
containing a bottle packed in the paper based
packaging;
Fig 2 is an elevational view of the shaped top of
the paper based packaging;
Fig 3 is a section of the shaped top of the paper
based packaging of Fig 2;
Fig 4 is an isometric view from above of the
shaped top of the paper based packaging of Fig 2;
Fig 5 is an isometric view from above of the
shaped base of the paper based packaging;
Fig 6 is an isometric view from below of the
shaped base of the paper based packaging of Fig 5;
Fig 7 is a plan view of the shaped base of the
paper based packaging of Fig 5;
Fig 8 is a section of the shaped bottom of the
paper based packaging of Fig 5.
Fig 1 shows a box 14 cut away to show the paper based packaging consisting of a shaped top 10 and shaped base 20. A bottle 15 is packed by the paper based packaging 10, 20.
With reference, more specifically, to Figs 2 to 4 there is shown a shaped top 10 of the paper based packaging.
The shaped top 10 is provided with an indented section 11. This indented section 11 creates hollow spaces 11A and 11B which can crumble to absorb the energy of an impact. The lower surface llC located at the bottom of the indented section 11 comes into direct contact with the top of the bottle 15.
A shaped section 12 is provided to receive the shoulders of the bottle 15. A hollow peripheral section 13 is provided around the bottle 15 to protect the bottle from impacts. Said hollow peripheral section 13 is provided with strengthening ribs 16.
Figs 5 to 8 show a shaped base 20 of the paper based packaging. The shaped base 20 is provided with an indented ring 21. This indented ring 21 creates hollow spaces 21A and 21B which can crumble to absorb the energy of an impact. The upper surface 21C located at the top of the indented ring 21 comes into direct contact with the bottom of the bottle 15.
There is provided a plurality of supporting crumple members 22A, 22B, 22C, 22D, 22E and 22F both to support the bottle 15 and to protect the bottle 15 from impacts by crumpling to absorb the energy of an impact.
Modifications and improvements may be made to the foregoing within the scope of the present invention.
