Abstract

Plant pathogenic fungi can be combated by treating the seed of the plant, with N'-cyclopropylmethoxy-N-phenylacetyl-2,3-difluoro-6-trifluoromethylbenzamidine.

Description

Title: Fungicidal Use Field of the Invention This invention relates to a new use for fungicidal compounds.
Prior Art In WO 9619442 there are disclosed certain benzamidoxime compounds which have fungicidal activity. The usual method for applying such compounds to the crops is by means of a foliar spray, and this is the method disclosed in the Examples of the specification.
We have now found that one specific compound in this specification has particularly good activity against foliar diseases when applied as a seed treatment. Very few commercial fungicides are used in this way.
Disclosure of the invention Thus, according to the invention, there is provided plant seed which has been treated with N'-cyclopropylmethoxy-N-phenylacetyl-2 , 3-difluoro-6-trifluoromethylbenzamidine.
Seeds which are particularly suited for treatment with the compound of the invention are cereal seeds, especially wheat, barley or rice. The seed can be treated in conventional manner for applying fungicides to seed.
The invention also provides a method of combating plant pathogenic fungi which comprises treating the seed of the plant with N'-cyclopropylmethoxy-N-phenylacetyl- 2,3-difluoro-6-trifluoromethylbenzamidine .
Examples of fungi which can be combated in this way include seed-borne or soilborne fungal pathogens, but especially airbome pathogens, such as Etysiphe spp., e.g. E. graminis.
The amount of compound used can vary over a wide range but is preferably applied to the seed at a rate of 5 to 200 g compound/100 kg seed. It can be applied in a conventional manner for treatment of seed by pesticides.
The invention is illustrated in the following Example.
Example Winter barley seeds were sprayed with an aqueous spray made by diluting a 5% EW formulation of N'-cyciopmpylmethoxy-N-phenylacetyl-2,3-difluoro- 6-trifluoromethylbenzamidine (Compound A) with water. After the desired amount of compound had been applied the seeds were allowed to dry and then sown. At given intervals the level of infestation of Erysiphe graminis on the emerged plants was assessed. The results are as follows:
Treatment % Disease 32 weeks after 34 weeks after 36 weeks after sowing sowing sowing Compound A at 0 0 0.3 209/100 g seed Compound A at 0 0 0 80g/100 g seed Baytan Universal* at 0.7 6.7 19.3 commercial rates Untreated 12.7 28.3 25.7 * = Baytan is the trade name for a commercially available seed treatment product containing triadimenol and fuberidazole.
