Abstract
Equipment for rapidly melting thermoplastic materials in powder or granular form without degradation, for use in white-lining and surfacing, comprises a heated rotating cylinder inside a heated outer chamber. The cylinder is fitted with vanes to move the product along the chamber to create turbulence and better thermal mixing. Heating is by indirect hot oil transfer.
Description
1. TECHNICAL FIELD.
THE INVENTION RELATES TO EQUIPMENT USED TO MELT OUT
THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS SUPPLIED IN POWDER OR GRANULAR FORM.
2.BACKGROUND THERMOPLASTIC PRE-HEATERS ARE WELL KNOWN PIECES OF EQUIPMENT
AND ARE USED EXTENSIVELY IN THE WHITE LINING CONTRACTING AND
SPECIALIST SURFACING CONTRACTING. THESE PIECES OF EQUIPMENT
ARE EITHER VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL MIXERS, DIRECT GAS HEATED
OR INDIRECTLY HEATED BY OIL TRANSFER.
BOTH HAVE THEIR INHERENT DRAWBACKS. THE INDIRECT OIL TRANSFER
HEATING HAS A LONG MELT OUT TIME COMPARED WITH THE DIRECT
GAS HEATER. THE DIRECT GAS HEATER HAS VERY HIGH CONTACT
TEMPERATURES WHICH INEVITABLY LEADS TO THERMAL DEGRADATION
OF THE PRODUCT BEING MELTED WHEN THE PRODUCT HAS REACHED
THE DESIRED TEMPERATURE RELATIVELY LARGE VOLUMES ARE
PRODUCED AND THEN HAVE TO BE MAINTAINED AT THE REQUIRED
TEMPERATURE.
3 INVENTION.
ACCORDING TO OUR INVENTION BOTH OF THE DEFECTS OF THE
CURRENTLY USED EQUIPMENT ARE OVERCOME WE CLAIM RAPID MELT
OUT TIME AND THE ELIMINATION OF PRODUCT DEGRADATION THE
MOLTEN PRODUCT IS OFTEN REQUIRED CONTINUOUSLY AT A MODERATE
RATE AND OUR INVENTION IS DESIGNED TO DO JUST THAT THIS IS
ACHIEVED BY USING A SMALL VOLUME INTENSIVE AGITATION MIXING
CHAMBER WITH A VERY HIGH RATIO OF HEATING SURFACE TO VOLUME.
THE HEATING IS SUPPLIED BY INDIRECT HOT OIL TRANSFER.
EXAMPLE.
THE MIXING CHAMBER CAN CONSIST OF EITHER ONE OR TWO CYLINDERS,
BUT TWO THE PREFERRED DESIGN AS A MORE INTENSIVE MIXING ACTION
OCCURS.
Claims (1)
- CLAIM.A THERMOPLASTIC PRE-HEATER CONSISTING OF A HEATED ROTATING CYLINDER INSIDE A HEATED OUTER CHAMBER. THE INNER CYLINDER TO BE FITTED WITH VANES TO MOVE THE PRODUCT ALONG THE CHAMBER AND TO CREATE TURBULENCE AND BETTER THERMAL MIXING.
