Description
SKIN CLEANSING COMPOSITION
The present invention relates to skin cleansing compositions and, more particularly, to rinse-off skin cleansing compositions which have anti-bacterial activity.
For skin cleansing compositions convenience is of upmost importance. It is further becoming increasingly important to keep the skin clean and protected from bacteria at all times. It is now commonplace to use convenient rinse-off systems which combine cleansing ofthe skin via the presence of a surfactant, together with the deposition of an anti-bacterial agent.
The traditional route to achieving such a benefit is to incorporate an anti-bacterial agent in the formulation to deliver an anti-bacterial benefit e.g. triclosan. T;tilisation of an anti-bacterial agent in a rinse-off system results in much of the anti-bacterial agent being rinsed off during use, resulting in an expensive and wasteful product.
In order to improve skin feel, various emollients, polymers and moisturising ingredients can be included in the formulation. Their effectiveness can be limited as they can be washed off during use and cannot act on the skin as a cream or lotion formulation does.
It appears on the whole, that the actual effectiveness of the anti-bacterial agent seems lower in some instances in rinse-off systems than other types of formulations.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of this.
According to the present invention there is provided a rinse-off cleansing composition comprising at least one surfactant together with at least one anti-bacterial agent and at least one synthetic phospholipid. For the avoidance of doubt the term "anti-bacterial agent" used herein does not relate to the aforementioned phospholipid which itself exhibits anti-bacterial activity.
The present invention thus includes a surfactant based formulation containing a synthetic phospholipid which provides a rinse-off system delivering anti-bacterial efficacy.
The compositions of the invention provide a rinse-off system with more effective antibacterial activity.
According to a preferred embodiment, the rinse-off cleansing composition of the invention contains a cationic synthetic phospholipid and ideally a synthetic cationic phospholipid, of the general formula:
rORMULA 1
where R = cocamidopropyl stearamidopropyl
linoleamidopropyl borageatnidopropyl and where x + y =3 Preferably the synthetic phospholipid is present in an amount in the range from 0.01 to 10%, more preferably from 0.01 to 1.9% and even further preferably 0.2 to 0.8% by weight, relative to the weight of the rinse-off composition.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the said anti-bacterial agent comprises any of the following either alone or in combination: triclosan; chlorohexidine digluconate, trichlorocarbanilide, p-chloro-m-Xylenol, Polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine complex and quaternary ammonium compounds such as cetrimonium bromide and benzalkonium chloride or mixtures thereof Triclosan is preferred in that Triclosan and the cationic phospholipid act synergistically to provide a composite having excellent anti-bacterial activity.
The anti-bacterial agent is preferably added in an amount from 0.01 to 2% by weight, relative to the weight of the composition and most preferably from 0.05 to 0.5% by weight.
The surfactant may be anionic, amphoteric, cationic, zwitterionic, non-ionic or a combination thereof. Preferably, the surfactant is anionic, amphoteric or non-ionic and is added to the formulation in an amount in the range from 0.1 and 60% by weight relative to the total weight of the rinse-off cleansing composition into which the surfactant is incorporated. The surfactant may comprise at least one soap. The compositions of the present invention may be in the form of soap bars, in which case it is found to be highly advantageous to utilise higher levels of surfactants, i.e. from substantially 50% to substantially 90% by weight.
The surfactant preferably comprises any of the following either alone or in combination: alkali metal alkyl ether sulphates, alkyl sulphates, sulphosuccinates, acyl glutamates; alkyl polyglucosides, isethionates, carboxylates, soaps, alkyl sulphates, ethoxylated and non-ethoxylated metal alkyl sulphanates, sultanes, taurates, sarcosinates, sulphonates, ether carboxylates, glycinates, quatemary ammonium compounds, polysorbates, sugar esters, alkyl phosphates, propionates, amino acid surfactants, glycinates, glysides, alkanolamides and betaines.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing a rinse-off cleansing composition comprising mixing together at least one of surfactant, at least one anti-bacterial agent and at least one synthetic phospholipid.
The compositions of the invention may also contain a polymeric skin or hair conditioning agent at a level preferably in the range from substantially 0.01% to 5%, more preferably from substantially 0.05% to 3% and especially from substantially 0.1% to 2% by weight. Suitable polymeric agents are the cationic, nonionic, amphoteric, and anionic polymers useful in the cosmetic field. Preferred are cationic and nonionic polymers used in the cosmetic fields as hair or skin conditioning agents.
Representative classes of these polymeric agents include cationic and nonionic polysaccharides; cationic and nonionic homopolymers and copolymers derived from acrylic and/or methacrylic acid; cationic and nonionic cellulose resins; cationic copolymers of dimethyldiallylammonium chloride and acrylamide and/or acrylic acid; cationic homopolymers of dimethyldiallylammonium chloride; cationic polyalkylene and ethoxypolyalkylene imines; quaternized silicones, and mixtures thereof.

The viscosity ofthe final composition (Brookfield RVT/DCP, 1 rpm with cone CP41 or CP52, 25"C, neat) is preferably at least approximately 500 cps, more preferably from approximately 1,000 to approximately 50,000 cps, especially from approximately 2,000 to approximately 30,000 cps.
The rinse-off cleansing compositions can optionally include additional hair or skin moisturizers which are soluble or suspended in the cleansing composition matrix. The preferred level of such moisturizers is from approximately 0.5% to approximately 20% by weight. In preferred embodiments, the moisturizer is selected from:

Test Bacteria: Pseudomonas Aeruginosa ATCC 15442
Suspension Test Results against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa ATCC 15442

The table above illustrates the antimicrobial effects for compositions with different levels of antimicrobial active. It can be clearly seen that the combination of triclosan and Phospholipid P-TC (Formulation 1) gives a log reduction that is considerably higher than that which we would expect based on the sum ofthe log reductions that are achieved by incorporating either active singly into the same base formulation.
