Abstract
232,611. International General Electric Co., Inc., (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitõts Ges.). April 16, 1924, [Convention date]. Riveting; caulking.-Riveted joints for boilers &c. are made by first heading the rivets without quite closing them on to the plates, and then exerting continuous lateral pressure on the rivet head by means of caulking-tools to produce the required tightness of the joint. The hydraulically-pressed tool e. Fig. 3, first forms the cuphead but does not tighten the joint, the cup-head being then acted on by a hydraulically-pressed caulking. tool f providecl with a clearance space h into which metal displaced during the tightening of the joint by lateral pressure applied at g may flow. In one modification, the lateral pressure may be applied by rollers r, Fig. 7, mounted in radial, pivoted links n in a rotary and axially adjustable head k. In a further modification, the rollers 20, Fig. 11, are mounted on levers 2 carried in radial slots in a head 3, each lever bearing on a fulcrum 8 and being pressed by a spring 10 against a cone 12 feathered on the rotary spindle 1. The axial adjustment of the cone relatively to the machine spindle is effected by a hand-wheel 13 coacting with a threaded non- rotating bush 15. In this modification the machine spindle is advanced till the rollers are just clear of the plate, further movement of the rollers to perform the lateral pressing operation being effected by the hand-wheel 13.
