Description

Title: Container Description of Invention This invention relates to a container.
It is known to provide a container with an openable base part to permit the contents of the container to be emptied into a collection vessel. It is also desirable for such containers to be portable by engagement with suitable manipulation means such as forks of a forklift truck.
An object of the invention is to provide a new or improved container.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, we provide a container comprising a base part and a plurality of wall parts, the base part defining an opening closable by a bottom wall, said bottom wall being openable to enable contents of the container to be discharged from the container, the bottom wall being releasably retained in a closed position by a retaining means and being permitted to open by movement of the retaining means to a release position by an operating member, the operating member being adapted to be engaged by an abutment by relative movement of the container towards the abutment.
The bottom wall may be mounted such that it can pivot about a generally horizontal axis disposed towards one end of the bottom wall and be retained in a closed position by a retaining means disposed towards the other end of the bottom wall.
The container may comprise a pair of retaining means.
Retaining means may be disposed one at each of two opposed sides of the container and may also be disposed towards one end of the container.
At least one further retaining means may be disposed towards the opposite end of the container.
The retaining means may comprise engagement means wherein a retaining portion of the bottom wall is received.
Where a pair of retaining means are disposed one at each of two opposed sides of the container and toward one end of the container, a pair of retaining portions may be disposed one at each of two opposed sides of the container and received in the engagement means of the retaining means.
At least one retaining portion may provide a pivot means for said bottom wall when received in said engagement means.
The retaining portions may comprise projections provided on the bottom wall.
Where the container comprises a further pair of retaining means, a further pair of retaining portions may be provided disposed one at each of two opposed sides of the container and received in the engagement means of the further retaining means.
At least one of the further retaining portions may provide a pivot means for said bottom wall when received in said engagement means.
The further retaining portions may comprise projections provided on the bottom wall.
The retaining means disposed on the same side of and towards opposite ends of the container may be rigidly linked to one another and moveable with one another.
The retaining means disposed on the same side and towards opposite ends of the container may be integrally provided and moveable with one another.
The retaining means may be disposed to be moveable with one another such that when the retaining means are displaced in a forward or rearwards direction relative to the container to a position where one retaining portion is released from its corresponding retaining means, the other retaining portion is retained in its corresponding retaining means.
The retaining means may be moveable to said release position by engagement of an operating member with a portion of a collection vessel, where said portion of a collection vessel provides said abutment.
The operating member may be moveable by engagement with said abutment in a direction having at least a horizontal component.
The operating member may be moveable by engagement with said abutment in a direction having at least a longitudinal component.
The operating member may be rigidly connected to the retaining means and moveable therewith.
The operating member may be integral with the retaining means and moveable therewith.
The operating member may comprise an end portion of the retaining means.
The retaining means may comprise a sliding member slidably attached to the container.
The engagement means may be rigidly connected to the sliding member and moveable therewith.
The engagement means may be integral with the sliding member and moveable therewith.
Biasing means may be provided to bias said sliding member to a position wherein the retaining portion of the bottom wall is retained in the engagement means.
Said biasing means may comprise resiliently deformable members such as a coil compression spring.
Said engagement means may comprise a generally horizontal member disposed below the sliding member and which supports the retaining portion when the bottom wall is in its closed position and the sliding member is in its biased position.
Said horizontal member may be disposed such that movement of the sliding member a selected distance displaces the horizontal member from beneath the retaining portion and permits the bottom wall to open.
Said container may be provided with safety catch means, to prevent the discharge of the contents of the container when such discharge is not desired.
Preferably said container may have receiving means adapted to engage manipulation means, and latch means to hold the container in engagement with the manipulation means.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a container comprising receiving means adapted to engage manipulation means, and latch means to hold the container in engagement with the manipulation means.
According to either aspect of the invention, a pair of receiving means may be disposed towards an end of the container disposed one at each of the two opposed sides of the container.
A further pair of receiving means may be provided disposed towards the other end of the container disposed one at each of two opposed sides of the container.
Said manipulation means may comprise one or more members which engage the receiving means.
Preferably said manipulation means comprises the forks of a fork-lift truck or similar vehicle.
Said latch means may comprise means to engage an abutment portion of the manipulation means when the container is supported by the manipulation means, such that the container is generally restricted in movement in a direction out of engagement with the manipulation means.
Said means to engage an abutment portion of the manipulation means may comprise a restraining abutment means which in a normal position permits introduction of the manipulation means into the receiving means, said restraining abutment means being moveable to an operable position where it engages the abutment portion of the manipulation means.
Said latch means may comprise a further member disposed transverse, such as perpendicular or generally perpendicular, to said restraining abutment means and pivotally attached to the container to permit movement of the restraining abutment means between its operable and normal positions.
Said restraining abutment means may be moveable from its normal position to its operable position by engagement of a contact means with the manipulation means.
Said contact means may comprise a member disposed transverse to said further member at a position towards the pivotal attachment of the further member.
When the latch means is in its normal position the further member is in a generally upright orientation such that the contact means and abutment means are generally one above the other and spaced such that the manipulation means may be introduced into the engagement means between the contact means and abutment means.
When the latch means is in its operable position, the further member is disposed, preferably generally horizontally, such that the contact means and restraining abutment means lie spaced generally side-by-side either side of an abutment portion of the manipulation means.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the invention, Figure 2 is a side-view of the container shown in Figure 1, showing the container prior to engagement by the manipulation means, Figure 3 is a side-view of the container shown in Figure 1 in the open position, and Figure 4 is a side view of the latch means.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the container of Figure 1 comprising a plurality of alternative features.
Referring now to Figures 1 to 3, a container 10 comprises a base part 11, front and rear wall parts 13a and side wall parts 13b. The base part 11 defines a opening ila closable by a bottom wall 12, shown in Figure 1 in broken outline in its open position and in solid outline in its closed position. The container 10 is provided with receiving means 14 to engage manipulation means 16. The receiving means 14 comprises a horizontal member 15 attached to the container 10 by generally parallel vertical sections 17. A latch means 18 is provided associated with each receiving means 14.
The bottom wall 12 is releasably retained by retaining means indicated generally at 30a and 30b in a closed position shown in solid outline in Figure 1 and Figure 2. The retaining means 30a and 30b disposed towards opposite ends of container 12 are integrally provided and comprise a sliding member 34 having portions 34a, 34b corresponding to each retaining means 30g, 30h, in which are disposed elongate apertures 31a and 31b. The sliding member 34 is attached to the container 10 by fastening means 32a and 32b which pass through apertures 31a and 31b respectively and permit the sliding member 34 to move in a direction generally parallel to the side wall part 13b of the container 10.
The retaining means 30a 30b further comprise engagement means 33a and 33b disposed below and generally parallel to the sliding member 34. Each engagement means 33a, 33b is attached to and, in this case, is integral with the sliding member 34 at its end closest to the respective end of the sliding member 34 and defines a slot 35g, 35b into which is received retaining portion 36a, 36b attached to the bottom wall 12. The retaining portions 36a, 36l2, at least in those portions which contact engagement means 33a, 33b are of generally cylindrical shape.
The sliding member 34 further comprises a central projecting member 37 disposed between abutment faces 38a and 38b provided on side wall part 13k.
Disposed between the central projection 37 and each abutment face 38g, 38b is a resiliently deformable member 39a, 39= in this case a coil compression member.
When the bottom wall 12 is in its closed position, each retaining portion 36a, 36b is further received in a slot 443, 44b to restrict movement of the bottom wall 12 in a direction extending between said ends.
It will be clear that variations on the configuration shown in Figure 1 are possible.
If desired the bottom wall may be mounted to pivot about an axis which is not releasable relative to the container in which case a retaining means is provided only at one end of the bottom wall.
The container shown in Figure 1 comprises separate and independently moveable retaining means disposed on opposed sides of the container, but the retaining means disposed on opposed sides could be linked or integrally provided as desired.
The latch means 18, as shown in more detail in Figure 4, comprises a restraining abutment means 21 and a contact means 22. A pair of further members 19 of dogleg shape having a first limb 19a inclined to a second limb 19b are disposed perpendicular to the restraining abutment means 21 and to the contact means 22. Alternatively, if desired the member 19 may be of any desired shape so as to be transverse to the restraining abutment means 21 and the contact means 22. Each further member 19 is pivotally attached to a respective vertical section 17 by attachment means 20 such that each further member 19 can rotate about a generally horizontal axis disposed generally perpendicular to vertical section 17. The restraining abutment means is attached to each further member 19 at the end distant from the attachment means 20 and the contact means 22 is attached to each further member 19 generally where the two limbs 19sL 19b join.
In use, as shown in Figure 2, when the latch means is in its normal position further members 19 hang in a general upright orientation such that abutment member 21 and contact member 22 are vertically spaced. Manipulation means 16, comprising the forks of a forklift truck, is introduced into the receiving means 14 in a generally horizontal direction as indicated by the arrow 40 between the abutment member 21 and contact member 22. When the manipulation means 16 is raised, as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4, the contact means 22 of the latch means 18 engages the manipulation means 16 such that the further members 19 are pivoted to a generally horizontal orientation. The restraining abutment member 21 is thus disposed to the rear of the vertical section 16~of manipulation means 16. The container 10 is hence constrained from moving an excessive distance laterally along the horizontal portion 16a of the manipulation means 16.
Although each receiving means is shown as being provided with latch means, it will be apparent that one or more receiving means could be provided without latch means as desired.
As shown in Figure 3, to empty the container 10, the container 10 is lifted over a collection vessel, a wall portion of which is indicated generally at 41.
The container 10 is lowered. such that at least a portion of sliding member 34 is disposed below the upper surface of the wall portion 41 of the collection vessel and so that by withdrawing the manipulation means in a direction generally indicated by arrow 42 an operating member 41a provided by an end portion of retaining means 3011, engages the wall portion 41 of the collection vessel. The sliding member 34 is displaced to the left relative to the container 10 until retaining portion 36a is no longer supported by engagement means 33a. The bottom wall 12 is then only supported by engagement means 33b and retaining portion 36b and consequently pivots about retaining portion 36b to its open position, releasing the contents of the container 10.
It will be appreciated that the container could similarly be emptied by bringing the end portion of the retaining means 30a into contact with a suitable wall portion of the collection vessel 41 and by disposing the container 10 in a generally forward direction, releasing the retaining portion 36b.
Upon disengaging retaining means 30b from the wall portion of the collection vessel 41, the biasing means 39a 39b restore the sliding member 34 to its central position. By lowering the container 10 against a suitable abutment such as the top of the wall portion 41 or any other surface or the like, the bottom wall 12 is pivoted back to its closed position. The engagement means 33e, 33b are provided with inclined sections 43a and 43b such that when the base part 12 returns to its closed position, the retaining portion 36b will contact the inclined portion 43 , 43b. The sliding member 34 is thus displaced against the resistance of biasing means 39a, 39b to permit the base section 12 to return to its closed position. The biasing means 39X, 3911 will then restore the sliding member 34 to its central position, and retaining portions 36e, 36b will once again be supported by engagement means 33, 33b.
To disengage the manipulation means 16 from the engagement means 14 and retaining means 18, the retaining means 16 is lowered such that the weight of the container 10 is no longer supported via the engagement means 14 by the manipulation means 16. The manipulation means 16 may then be lowered such that portion 19b of the members 19 is in a generally vertical position and restraining abutment means 21 returns to a position generally below the horizontal portion 16a of the manipulation means 16. The manipulation means 16 can then be withdrawn in a generally horizontal direction.
An alternative embodiment of the invention is shown in FigureS. The embodiment is the same as that described above with reference to Figures 1 to 4, but including additional features. The same reference numerals are used in Figure 5 as used hitherto for corresponding parts. It will be apparent that any or all of the features described may be provided on the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 4 and described above.
The container comprises a separate operating member 46 attached to retaining means 30c 30d. A portion 46a of the operating member 46 projects outwardly of the container beyond the ends of retaining means 30 , 30d. The portion 46a engages the abutment portion of the collection vessel and thus displaces both sliding members relative to the container, permitting the bottom wall to open.
The bottom wall 12 may be provided with suitable ground engaging means, for example wheels 47. The wheels 47 are rotatably mounted on the retaining portions 36 and permit the container to be moved without being lifted.
When the bottom wall 12 is in its open position and it is desired to close it by lowering the container 10 against a suitable abutment as described hereinbefore, the wheels 47 will be preferably contact the abutment and so remove the need for the bottom wall 12 to be brought into direct contact with the abutment.
The container 10 may be provided with suitable means to permit a plurality of such containers to be stacked vertically. The suitable means comprise inclined sections 48 , 48b provided on each receiving means 14. The inclined sections 48g, 48b are disposed such that when said containers are stacked vertically, an end part 11b of the base part 11 of the upper container is received between the corresponding pair of inclined sections 48a, 48h provided on the receiving means 14 of the lower container. The upper container is thus constrained from movement in a horizontal direction.
It will be apparent that alternative means of permitting containers to be stacked may be provided.
To prevent the bottom wall 12 opening when not desired, safety catch means may be provided. The safety catch means 49 comprises a pair of catch members 50a, 50 disposed facing one another and spaced horizontally. The catch members are pivotally attached to the container 10 towards one of their ends and connected towards their other ends by a transverse member 51. The central projection 37 comprises a projecting part 54. Safety catch means 49 is pivotable between a first position, shown in solid outline and a second position shown in broken outline. When the sliding member 34 is in its central position and the safety catch means is in its first position, a portion of the projecting part 54 of the central projection 37 is disposed between the catch members 50a, 50b thus constraining the sliding member 34 from longitudinal movement. When it is desired to discharge the contents of the container, the safety catch means 49 is moved to its second position. The projecting part 54 is no longer disposed between catch members 50a, 50b and the sliding member 34 is free to move longitudinally. The container may then be emptied and closed as described hereinbefore, and the safety catch 49 may then be returned to its first position.
The container may comprise further receiving means 55, a pair of such receiving means disposed on each side of the container with one of each pair disposed towards each end of the container 10. The further receiving means 55 comprises a first member 56 disposed above the wall 13b of the container 10, attached at one end to the receiving means 14, and at its other end to a second member 57 extending transverse to the first member 56 between the first member 56 and the wall 13b. The further receiving means 55 is thus disposed to engage the manipulation means 16 in a direction generally parallel to the ends of the container 10. When the manipulation means engaged with the further receiving means 55, in particular a fork lift truck, is provided with a side shift capability, the container 10 may be emptied as described hereinbefore but where the operating member 41a or 46 is brought into engagement with a suitable abutment surface, for example a wall portion 41 of a collection vessel, by sideways motion of the manipulation means. It will be clear that when the container is being emptied in this fashion, it is not essential to provide latch means on the receiving means 55 to prevent the container being dislodged from the manipulation means 16 when brought into engagement with a suitable abutment surface. Suitable latch means may however be provided as desired, for example for safety purposes. Said further receiving means may be provided instead of, or in addition to receiving means 14.
Any operating member described herein may be provided with a resiliently deformable portion, for example a rubber block, to ensure operation when the operating member abuts a portion of the collection vessel.
It will be clear that although the manipulation means specifies the forks of a forklift truck, the container could be adapted for engagement with other manipulation means or for manipulation by other vehicles.
If desired, an openable bottom wall as described herein may be provided in a container without said receiving means. Alternatively, a latch means as described herein may be provided for any container whether or not provided with an openable bottom wall as described herein.
If desired the operating member may be provided separate from said retaining means and operatively connected thereto by suitable means.
If desired the engagement means may be of different configuration to that described.
If desired, a single retaining means may be provided at one or each end of the container, for example, at a position at or adjacent the middle of the respective end with suitable means being provided to control rotation of the bottom wall about an axis extending between the ends of the container.
The suitable means may comprise the upper ends 45a 45b of slots 44a, 44E, which constrain upward motion of the retaining portions 36g, 36b on each side of the bottom wall, and the retaining means, which prevents downward motion of the bottom wall.
If desired, the container may comprise a plurality of compartments, where the bottom part of at least one of the compartments may comprise a base part defining an opening close able by a bottom wall as described herein, and where the bottom wall of at least some of said compartments may be separate or linked.
Any other suitable means may be provided if desired.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
