Abstract
A horizontal surface, in particular a tiled surface, e.g. floors, kitchen tops and other working surfaces, wherein the tiles (11) are laid on a substrate (14) adjacent to each other, and the spaces (12) between adjacent tiles (11) are filled with a material (13) consisting of ground glass or a mixture of ground glass and sand. If required, the tiles may be laid on a leveling screed (15) which may be formed as a mixture of ground glass and sand.
Description
FLOOR SURFACES
THIS INVENTION relates to floor surfaces in particular tiled surfaces e.g. floors, kitchen tops and other working surfaces.
The term tiles is intended to include floor elements such as wood blocks, bricks, tiles e.g. of ceramic or clay or concrete or brick, and pavers or paviours.
According to this invention a floor surface comprises tiles laid adjacent to each other, space between adjacent tiles receiving filler material comprising ground glass.
The filler material may fill any spaces between adjacent tiles.
The filler material may consist of ground glass.
The filler material may comprise a mixture of ground glass and sand.
The tiles may be laid on a levelling screed. The screed may consist of ground glass or comprise a mixture of sand and ground glass.
The invention includes a method of forming a floor surface comprising the steps of laying tiles adjacent to each other and applying material to spaces between adjacent tiles, the material being or comprising ground glass.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of part of a floor;
Fig. 2 is a section through part of a floor;
and Fig. 3 is a section through part of another floor.
A floor 10 comprises tiles 11 laid adjacent to each other to cover the floor. Any gaps 12 between adjacent tiles 11 may receive filler material 13, which may fill the gaps 12.
The tiles 11 may be laid on a substrate 14 which may be, for example, concrete or other surface.
A levelling screed 1 5 of flowable material may be placed on the substrate 14 and the tiles 11 laid on the screed 15.
The material of the screed may be, for example, sand.
In the present case the filler material is ground glass, which may be of recycled glass.
The particle size of the ground glass may, for example, be similar to or less than the particle size of sand used in laying bricks on pavements for example.
The material of the screed layer 15 may also be ground glass or a mixture of ground glass and sand in any selected proportion. The filler material may be a mixture of sand and ground glass.
In the mixture the ground glass may be from 0.1% to 99.9% by weight; or the screed and filler material may be all ground glass.
The floor surface may be indoors or outdoors and may be exposed to the elements.
The tiles may have a desired shape and may have peripheral grooves and spacers.
The ground glass particles may be of uniform size or of differing sizes.
Claims (13)
1. A floor surface comprising tiles laid adjacent to each other, spaces between adjacent tiles receiving filler material comprising ground glass.
2. A floor surface according to Claim 1, wherein the filler material fills any spaces between adjacent tiles.
3. A floor surface according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the filler material consists of ground glass.
4. A floor surface according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the filler material comprises a mixture of ground glass and sand.
5. A floor surface according to any preceding claim, wherein the tiles are laid on a levelling screed.
6. A floor surface according to Claim 5, wherein the levelling screed comprises ground glass.
7. A floor surface according to Claim 5, wherein the levelling screed comprises a mixture of ground glass and sand.
8. A floor surface according to any preceding claim, wherein the ground glass is recycled glass.
9. A floor surface according to any preceding claim, in which the ground glass is of uniform particle size.
10. A floor surface according to any one of Claims 1 to 8, wherein the ground glass is made up of particles of different sizes.
11. A method of forming a floor surface comprising the steps of laying tiles adjacent to each other and applying material to spaces between adjacent tiles, the material being or comprising ground glass.
12. A method according to Claim 11, wherein the spaces are filled with said material.
13. A method according to Claim 11 or Claim 12, including the step of laying tiles on a levelling screed of flowable material placed on a substrate.
