Abstract
A wind powered vessel having a hull and a deck of substantially the same cross sectional shape and mirror image of one another, apart from a depression in the deck and a rudder on the hull. The depression is in the form of a dimple with one fifth in front of the widest part of the deck and four fifths to the stern. The depth of the dimple is at a maximum at midships and is one fifth of the width. The dimple is said to serve as a sail.
Description
Sailing Shuttle
The hull and deck are almost the same dimensions, apart from the dimple in the deck and the rudder on the hull.
The dimple is in fact the sail. It is fixed in the deck, at the widest part of the deck, one fifh in front of midships and four fifths to the stern. The depth of the dimple is at its maximum at midships, which is one fifth of the width, which is the same forwards and to the rear. As the dimple decreases in size the same dimensions apply.
The draft ofthe shuttle is determined by the weight of it: the lighter it is the better it will performs It is designed for sailing to windward. As a square rigger sails down wind, the shuttle will be able to do the same to windward.
It was designed to take part in the Atlantic Single-Handed Yacht Race. With the prevailing west to south-westerly wind, it will have a great advantage.
Claims (6)
1. A sailing shuttle with a hull and deck ofthe same dimensions, apart from a depression in the deck called "the dimple" and a rudder on the hull.
2. A sailing shuttle as claimed in claim 1 wherein the dimple is fixed in the deck at its widest part, one fifth in front of midships and four fifths to the stern.
3. A sailing shuttle as claimed in claim 2 wherein the depth of the dimple is at its maximum at midships, the depth being one fifth ofthe width.
4. A sailing shuttle as claimed in claim 2 wherein the dimensions of the dimple remain constant as its size decreases, the depth being one fifth ofthe width.
5. A sailing shuttle as claimed in claim 2 wherein the midships is one fifth in length from the stern, and the width at midships is one fifth ofthe length.
6. A sailing shuttle substantially as described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
