Abstract
A system comprising a personal computer and a fax machine is disclosed wherein the user can request an activity report containing information relating to the status of documents transmitted or received by the fax which is then displayed on the computers monitor.
Description
1 1 2321573 METHOD OF CONFIRMING ACTIVITY REPORT OF A FACSIMILE IN A
COMPLEX SYSTEM
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a complex system of a facsimile apparatus and a personal computer which are in communication with each other and, more particularly, to a method of confirming an activity report of the facsimile apparatus.
Recently, as electronic products proliferate and computers become ever more Popular, Complex systems which are connected to the computer and have various functions have been developed. One example is a complex system of a personal computer and a facsimile apparatus. In such a complex system, the facsimile apparatus is connected to the personal computer through a cable and transmits and receives data through the cable. Moreover, printing is performed through a printer of the facsimile apparatus.
Generally, the facsimile apparatus stores in a memory and manages transmitting/receiving contents of a document in a data base on the basis of the transmitting/receiving date.
Further, the facsimile apparatus provides an activity report confirming function to allow confirmation of the transmitting/receiving status of the documents managed in the memory. The activity report confirming function confirms the transmitting/receiving status of the documents managed in the memory by printing a report list on record paper using the printer. However, this presents the problem of unnecessary paper wastage by printing the status of the documents each time an activity report confirming request is generated.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an objective of the invention to provide an improved method of confirming an activity report which prevents such unnecessary waste of paper.
2 Accordingly, the present invention provides a method of confirming an activity report of a facsimile in a complex system including the facsimile and a computer, the method comprising:
transmitting an activity report transmission request to the facsimile from the computer; in response to the activity report transmission request, transmitting the activity report data from the facsimile to the computer; and displaying the said data on an output device of the computer.
Preferably, the activity report transmission request is transmitted to the facsimile in response to the receipt of an activity report confirming request via an input device of the computer.
Preferably, the activity report confirming request and the activity report transmission request are specific to a given activity report and the data of that given activity report Is so transmitted to the computer.
The input device may be a keyboard or pointing device and the output device may be a monitor.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 30 Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a complex system of a personal computer and a facsimile apparatus to which the present invention may be applied; and Fig. 2 is a flow chart showing control operations executed in the complex system of Fig. 1 to conf irm an activity report.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a complex system of a personal computer and a facsimile apparatus. A controller 10 3 controls the overall operation of the facsimile apparatus according to a control program stored in a read only memory (ROM) 22. A line interface unit (LIU) 12 connects a telephone line to a MODEM (modulator- demodulator) 14 under the control of the controller 10 and detects incoming rings. The detected incoming ring is supplied to the controller 10. The MODEM 14 demodulates a modulation signal received through the WU 12 and modulates a signal to be sent to the telephone line through the LIU 12.
The ROM 22 stores the control program executed by the controller 10 and stores data needed to execute functions. A random access memory (RAM) 24 stores received image data or read image data and temporarily stores data generated when the facsimile apparatus performs its functions. Moreover, the RAM 24 stores various activity report data such as the transmitting/receiving status of a document.
A scanner 18 reads a document under the control of the 20 controller 10 if a transmitting mode or a copy mode is set and supplies the read document to the controller 10. A printer 20 prints received image data or read image data under the control of the controller 10. An operating panel (OPE) 16 includes a plurality of keys for setting or initiating functions provided in the facsimile apparatus and supplies key data following key depression by a user to the controller 10. The OPE 24 has a display window f or displaying a current operating state of the facsimile apparatus under the control of the controller 10.
An interface unit 26 interfaces data transmitted and received between the facsimile apparatus and a personal computer 30. The personal computer 30 has a monitor, a hard disk drive and a keyboard (or mouse or both) and communicates with the facsimile apparatus. Furthermore, the personal computer 30 transmits an activity report transmission request message to the facsimile apparatus and stores or displays on the monitor activity report data received in response to the request message.
4 Fig. 2 is a f low chart of control operations executed by the personal computer and the facsimile apparatus to confirm an activity report. In brief, if a user requests that a specific activity report should be generated, an activity report transmission request message is transmitted to the facsimile apparatus. Activity report data received f rom the facsimile apparatus in response to the activity report transmission request message is stored and displayed on the monitor.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to Fig. 2. A central processing unit (CPU) of the personal computer 30 checks whether key data corresponding to an activity report output request is generated at step 210. If such key data is generated, the CPU of the personal computer 30 displays an activity report select request message on the monitor at step 212. The activity report can be selected according to the kind of reports managed in the facsimile apparatus and generally including a transmitting document activity report, a receiving document activity report, etc.
At step 214, the CPU of the personal computer 30 cheeks whether the activity report is selected. If it is selected, the CPU of the personal computer 30 transmits a transmission request message of the selected activity report to the facsimile apparatus through a cable connected to a serial port at step 216. The data communication between the facsimile apparatus and the personal computer 30 is implemented by a typical protocol executed in a complex system.
If the transmission request message of the selected activity report is received, the facsimile apparatus performs a series of processes for transmitting data corresponding to the selected activity report. That is, if the transmission request message of the selected activity report is provided to the controller 10 through the interface unit 26 of the facsimile apparatus, the controller 10 reads data corresponding to the selected activity report at step 218. The process for reading data corresponding to the activity report is identical to a process for reading activity report data stored in the RAM 24 to perform the activity report confirming function provided in a general facsimile apparatus.
If the data corresponding to the activity report demanded from the personal computer 30 is read, the controller 10 10 transmits the activity report data to the personal computer 30 with a general transmission protocol form at step 220. The activity report data is sent to the cable connected to the personal computer 30 through the interface unit 26.
When the activity report data is received, the CPU of the personal computer 30 stores the received activity report data in the memory at step 222. At step 224, the CPU of the personal computer 30 displays the activity report data on the monitor through an input/output port.
As described above, the activity report managed in the facsimile apparatus can be confirmed through the personal computer. Therefore, the usage of record paper can be reduced.
