Abstract
The card 10 incorporates a thin sound recording and playback device 12, fixed to or carried in a pocket on the inside of the card, having record ad play buttons 18,20. An actuator recessed in a hole 22 has to be triggered by insertion of a pen or pencil to ready the device for recording. The device includes a loudspeaker grille 14 and is powered by photoelectric cells 16.
Description
GREETINGS CARDS
This invention relates to greetings cards, and is concerned with greetings cards which can produce an acoustic response.
Conventionally, greetings cards have been essentially visual in nature, appealing to the eye of the recipient.
Books are known, especially children's books, which when opened will produce sounds. However, these are "built in" and the reader has no control over the content of the sound.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a greetings card which has the capacity to hold a recorded message and to play this back on demand.
Broadly in accordance with the invention there is provided a greetings card incorporating a sound recording and playback device.
The sound recording and playback device is preferably in the form of a thin element which can be fixed to or carried on the inside of the card. For example, the device can be carried within a pocket affixed to the card.
The sound recording and playback device preferably includes a light-responsive energy source which can be powered by daylight or artificial light.
The sound recording and playback device may be provided with a recessed control for initiating recording of sound, for example in the form of a recessed actuator which requires a positive action by the user to make the device ready for receiving a voice message.
Preferably, the recording and playback device is arranged to have a recording period of for example ten seconds. The device may either be one which enables repeated use of the recording and playback facility or one which permits "one time" use only.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, one presently preferred embodiment of greetings card in accordance with the invention will now be briefly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a sound recording and reproducing device mounted inside a greetings card.
As shown in the drawing, a greetings card 10 has a sound recording and reproducing device 12 mounted on one inside face thereof. The device 12 is a thin, rigid member, for example rectangular in shape. It incorporates means both to record sound and also to play back a recorded sound. ,A loudspeaker grille 14 is shown. The device is powered by light falling upon photoelectric cells 16. Alternatively, the device may have any other suitable power source. The front face of the device 12 is provided with a "record" pad or button 18 and a "play" pad or button 20. Instead of or in addition to the record button 18 there may be provided a small hole 22 in the face of the device which is adapted to receive the point of a pen or pencil for example. At the bottom of the hole 22 is an actuating device to trigger the record mechanism, so that if a pen or pencil point is pushed into the hole the device will be activated for recording. This helps to avoid inadvertent actuation of the device by depression of the pad or button 18. The device is preferably designed to provide a recording time of say ten seconds, for a suitable message to the recipient.
On receipt, the recipient simply has to press the play pad or button 20 to hear the recorded message. The device 12 can be designed for repeated use or alternatively as a "one time" device which cannot be used to record a message more than once. Repeated play would of course be possible.
The device 12 can be fixed to the card by any appropriate means. It can be mounted by adhesive or fitted within a receiving pocket provided on the inside of the card.
Alternatively, the card can be provided with a cut-out and a suitable insert fitted into the cut-out to hold the device 12.
