Abstract

A gas heated paint scraper comprises a hand-held assembly 1 having a gas feed tube 4 attached to it for supply of gas from a cylinder 13. Part of a gas jet valve protrudes from the front of the assembly and accepts 1 of 3 interchangeable nozzles 2. The assembly also accepts 1 of 3 interchangeable scraping blades 5 attaching adjacent the nozzle by means of rectangular insert 6 cooperating with a slot. A push down gas valve 3 is located on the top of the assembly and has a piezo-electric spark generator associated with it to ignite the gas. The handle assembly may be provided with a triangular shaving blade 7 which is situated at the end of a hexagonal stem which locates in a corresponding hole in the handle.

Description

P.S.B.U. (PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT) This invention relates to burning and scraping off paint.
Gas burners and scrappers are well known in the decorating trade. If a person uses a torch to apply heat while scraping, he must use both hands and co-ordinate them carefully, lest the one holding the scraper gets too close to the one holding the torch. The need for two hands in scraping and burning processes also makes it harder for a person to safely do this kind of work from a ladder, since he has no hand free to hold on to the ladder.
A one handed paint stripper burner unit with a built-in ignition generator, would have a handle assembly with a gas feed tube leading through it's interior. At the front end, this tube would terminate in a gas jet valve which could accept three different interchangeable nozzles.
In the handle would be a return spring push down on/off gas valve connected to a button mounted on the upper exterior of the handle. This button would also be connected to a compression or battery operated piezo-electric spark generator which would be provided within the handle for igniting the gas at the nozzle. The gas tube would exit the gas valve and would terminate out of the back end of the handle assembly. The handle would also accept three interchangeable stainless steel scraping blades. Three different blades and nozzles (in wide, medium and thin widths) each blade would terminate in a rectangular male piece which would insert into a slot in the front end of the handle below the bumer and also a triangular shaving blade with a central stem terminate in a hexagon male end piece which would insert into a hexagon hole in the front end of the handle above the burner and can be rotated in six different positions. This system would allow for easy blade changing. A length of flexible, flame proof metal-sheathed gas hose would exit the back end of the handle and would terminate in a screw-on coupler which incorporates a gas adjustable tap valve and fitted to a standard collar designed to fit the standard, screw in disposable gas cylinder. The collar would be fitted with a clip assembly, enabling it to be clipped onto the user's belt on the top of his trousers, which would be provided with the product.
For safety purposes, the special collar, gas tap valve and clip assembly could feature an automatic shut-off or non return valve which would be triggered if the flexible metal-sheathed gas hose was cut or came free or the cylinder tipped or was dropped.
A specific embodiment of the invention will be described by the way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1. shows P.S.B.U. in perspective with all its components.
Figure 2. shows the special collar, gas tap valve and clip assembly.
Figure 3. shows the P.S.B.U. and the special collar, gas tap valve and clip assembly in perspective with all its components.

Figure 5. shows the P.S.B.U. on a window frame surface in perspective.
P.S.B.U. (PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT) Description This information summary reviews the distinctive features of the product idea and the needs it may fulfil. The concept of P.S.B.U. is a special combination scraper burner and ignition system that could be especially useful in removing old paint.
The P.S.B.U. would consist of two main components a hand-held scraper and bumer unit and a special gas cylinder collar, adjustable gas tap valve and clip assembly.
1. Scraper handle assembly with a gas feed tube leading through it's interior. (Fig. 1.) 2. Protruding at the front end of the handle assembly is a gas jet valve assembly which could accept three different interchangeable nozzles. (in wide, medium and thin widths) (Fig. 1.) 3. From the front end of the handle assembly, within the handle assembly the gas tube is connected to a spring loaded push down on/off gas valve, connected to a button mounted on the upper central exterior of the handle assembly, this button would also be connected to a compression or battery operated piezo-electric spark generator which would be provided within the handle assembly for igniting the gas at the nozzle. (Fig. 1.) 4. The gas tube would exit the gas valve and would terminate protruding out the back end of the handle assembly. (Fig. 1.) 5. The handle assembly would also accept three interchangeable stainless steel scraping blades. (in wide, medium and thin widths) (Fig. 1.) 6. Each blade would terminate in a rectangular male piece which would insert into a slot in the front end of the handle assembly below the nozzle. (Fig. 1.) 7. Triangular shaving blade with a central stem terminate in a hexagon male end piece which would insert into a hexagon hole in the front end of the handle assembly above the nozzle and can be rotated in five different positions. (Fig. 1.) 8. At the back end of the handle assembly where the gas tube protrudes, would be fixed a length of flexible, flame-proof metal-sheathed gas hose which would terminate at the gas adjustable tap valve. (Fig. 1.) (Fig. 2.) 9. The gas adjustable tap valve would be fixed to a standard cylinder collar. (Fig. 2.) 10. Built in the gas adjustable tap valve would be an automatic shut-off/non return valve.
(Fig. 2.) 11. The waist clip assembly would be fixed to a standard cylinder collar. (Fig. 2.) 12. A standard cylinder collar. (Fig. 2.) 13. A standard screw in gas cylinder. (Fig. 2.)

Claims (6)

  1. P.S.B.U. (PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT) CLAIMS 1. A one handed "PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT" would comprise of two main components a special hand-held paint stripper burner unit and a special gas cylinder collar, adjustable gas tap valve and waist clip assembly. The hand-held paint stripper burner unit is fitted with a special built-in spring loaded press down on and release off button that is mounted on the upper central exterior of the handle assembly. This button is connected to a gas valve and a compression or battery operated piezo-electric sparking generator fitted inside the handle assembly. The hand-held paint stripper burner unit is connected by a flexible, flame-proof metal-sheathed gas hose to the special gas cylinder collar, adjustable gas tap valve and waist clip assembly.
  2. 2. A one handed "PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT" as Claimed in Claim 1, Could be safer especially when burning and stripping paint from a ladder. Normally, you would have one hand holding a combined gas gun and cylinder and the other hand following up with a scraper thus leaving you with no way of holding onto the ladder and having to balance and juggle with the gas gun and the scraper therefore making it very dangerous to do the work. With the P.S.B.U. you would have one hand free to hold onto the ladder while doing the same job as described above.
  3. 3. A one handed "PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT" as Claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, Could be easy to use especially when burning and stripping external paint work. Normally, you would have one hand holding a combined gas gun and cylinder and the other hand following up with a scraper, sometimes you get the gas gun close to the work or the wind extinguishes the flame, this problem means you would have to put down the scraper and the gas gun and try to re-light the gas gun using matches or a lighter which can be difficult and so losing your rhythm, time and maybe wasting gas. With the P.S.B.U. you would simply release your finger off the button and re-press the button on. Thus making it easy to re-light.
  4. 4. A one handed "PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT" as Claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, Could be safer especially when burning and stripping paint. Normally, if you are burning off paint and you drop the gas gun while alight there is always a chance of burning yourself or setting something else alight. If the P.S.B.U. was dropped it would (as you've let go ofthe button) automatically shut off the gas at the nozzle, thus not burning you or anything else.
  5. 5. A one handed "PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT" as Claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4, Could be safer especially when burning and stripping paint. Normally, you would have one hand holding a combined gas gun and cylinder and the other hand following up with a scraper, sometimes you may have to scrape in a downwardly direction thus pointing the gas gun in a downwardly direction causing the liquid in the gas cylinder to flow to the top of the gas cylinder, thus causing the gas gun to flare up which can be hazardous. With the P.S.B.U.
it can be used in any direction without flaring up because it is connected by a length of flexible, metal-sheathed gas hose and would terminate in a screw coupler on the special cylinder collar and clip assembly, enabling it to be clipped onto the user's belt at the top of his trousers, thus keeping it up right.
  6. 6. A one handed "PAINT STRIPPER BURNER UNIT" as Claimed in Claim 4 or Claim 5, Protruding at the front central end of the handle assembly is a gas jet valve assembly which could accept three different interchangeable nozzles. (in wide, medium and thin widths) The handle assembly would accept three different interchangeable stainless steel scraping blades.
(in wide, medium and thin widths) Each blade would terminate in a rectangular male piece which would insert into a slot in the front end of the handle assembly below the nozzle. Also a triangular shaving blade with a central stem terminate in a hexagon male end piece which would insert into a hexagon hole in the front end of the handle assembly.
