Abstract
A cover (24) for an article. e.g. a radio which can be moved between a first position in which it covers at least part of the front side of the radio and a second position in which it constitutes at least part of a stand to support the radio the cover being biassed by a spring (32) towards either the first position or the second position.
Description
A COVER DEVICE
This invention relates to a cover device for an article, e.g. a radio.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a cover device for an article having a front side wherein the cover device is movable between a first position in which it covers at least part of the front side of the article and a second position in which it constitutes at least part of a stand to support the article, and wherein the cover device is biassed towards either said first position or said second position.
Advantageously, the cover device may be biassed towards said first position.
Conveniently, the cover device may be biassed towards said second position.
Suitably, the cover device may be pivotally engaged with the article.
The cover device may advantageously be swivellably movable relative to the article.
When the cover device is in the second position. at least part of an end of the cover device may conveniently abut a back side of the article.
When the cover device is in the second position, at least part of the end of the cover device may suitably abut at least one groove on the back side of the article.
Advantageously, when the cover device is in the second position, at least part of the end of the cover device may abut two grooves on the back side of the article.
Conveniently, the cover device may comprise a first covering means and a second covering means pivotally engaged with each other.
Suitably, said first covering means may be shorter than said second covering means.
Said first covering means may advantageously be pivotally engaged with the article, and when the cover device is in the second position, an end of the second covering means may abut the back side of the article.
Said first covering means and said second covering means, when in the first position. may conveniently extend from the back side of the article to the front side of the article.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided an electrical and/or electronic appliance comprising a cover device according to the first aspect of the present invention.
Advantageously, the electrical and/or electronic appliance may be a radio.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a front view of a radio including a cover device according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 shows a rear view of the radio shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a partial exploded view of the radio shown in Fig. 1; and,
Figs. 4A-4E show movement of the cover device of the radio shown in Fig. 1 from the first position to the second position.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an electrical appliance in the form of a radio is generally designated as 10. The radio 10 includes a front side 12, a rear side 14, a volume/on-off knob for turning on/off the radio 10 and adjusting the volume, a tuning knob 18 and an extensible antenna 20. Batteries may be received in a battery compartment covered by a plate 22. The radio 10 also includes a cover 24 which, when in the position shown in Figs.
1 and 2. shields the speaker (not shown) on the front side 12 of the radio 10.
Fig. 3 shows in detail the construction of the cover 24. The cover 24 includes a front plate 26 and a back plate 28 engaged with each other via a shaft 30 and a torsion spring 32. A looped portion 34 of the spring 32 is received in a pocket 36 of the front plate 26, while two legs 38 of the spring 32 are received under the spaces of two tongues 40 of the back plate 28. The back plate 28 is shorter than the front plate 26, and they are pivotally movable relative to each other about the shaft 30. The torsion spring 32 biasses the front plate 26 and the back plate 28 to assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this position, the front plate 26 and the back plate 28 extend from the front side 12 to the rear side 14 of the radio
10. Alternatively, the torsion spring 32 may bias the front plate 26 and the back plate 28 to assume the position shown in Fig. 4E
The back plate 28 is pivotally attached to the rear side 14 of the radio 10 by two pins 42.
The rear side 14 of the radio 10 includes a semi-circular channel 44 for receiving two cylindrical portions 46 of the back plate 28, whereby the back plate 28 may swivel about the pins 42 relative to the rear side 14. The rear side 14 of the radio 10 is also suitably recessed to receive the back plate 28 whereby it is flush with the rear side 14.
The rear side 14 of the radio 10 includes two grooves 48 for abutting an end edge 50 of the front plate 26 when the cover 24 is in the position as shown in Fig. 4E.
Figs. 4A to 4E show the movement of the cover 24. As can be seen, the front plate 26 of the cover 24 may be pulled away, e.g. by hand, from the front side 12 of the radio 10 to cross over the top of the radio 10 until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 4E, in which it, together with the bottom end 52 of the radio 10, support the radio 10. In this position, the end edge 50 of the front plate 26 abuts and engages the grooves 48 on the rear side 14.
The cover device of the present invention can be used in a large variety of products, and in particular such electrical and/or electronic devices as audio equipment, clocks, torches, mobile telephones, weather forecasting devices and the like.
It should be understood that the above only illustrates an embodiment of the present invention. and that various modifications and alterations may be made thereto without departing from the spirit thereof.
