Abstract
231,959. Kamm, L. Jan. 19, 1924. Kinematograph apparatus. - Film winding means constructed to obviate rewinding comprises an open tray or support rotatably mounted on anti-friction bearings in the supply box and carrying the coiled film, central apertures in the tray and bottom of the supply box, a film guideway extending along the axis of the tray and bent towards the inner convolution of the film, and a centre fitting mounted within the coil of film and limiting its inward movement; the film may be wound on to a split take-up spool, e.g. as described in Specification 234,961, one flange of the spool being detachable from the core and serving to support the film on the tray. The supply box 1 is mounted on a casing 64, Fig. 5, forming the top of the projector housing 2, the casing being provided with pairs of flanged rollers 8 on each side of the film passage, and two of the rollers being mounted on a spring pressed frame 8 movable by hand by a fitting 8<d> so as to facilitate threading. The housing 2 mav be carried by a casing 65 on the take-up spool box 66 which may be gripped between jaws on uprights as described in Specification 216,925, and rollers 167 and a movable plate 170, covering the film slits 169 and enabling the film to be inserted edgewise between the rollers, may be provided. The supply box has a central aperture surrounded by a ball race 67 carrying a tray 9 having a central aperture 69, and the tray is provided with a flange 71 to engage a flange 70 on a plate 9 which actually supports the film. The centre fitting comprises four vertical, and preferably tapered, rollers 11 - - 11<d>, Fig. 1, and an obliquely placed roller 17 over which the film passes to a guide channel 14 consisting of a strip having turned-over edges 14. The rollers and the guide 14 are carried by a bar 12 which may be hinged at 13 to the box 1 and carry a horizontal roller 15, or may extend across the box so as to rest on opposite parts of its edge. The guide 14 has one end adjacent the roller 17 and curves so as to guide the film easily into the axis of the tray and through the aperture therein; it may be provided with a roller 50 at the entrance to it. The roller 11 is mounted at one end of a bent lever 16 pivoted at 18 to the arm 12. If the innermost convolution of the film tightens on to the rollers, the, consequent movement of the roller 11 and the lever 16 causes a driven friction wheel 21, Fig. 2, to engage the tray 9 and speed up its rotation. For this purpose the lever 16 engages a lever 20 pivoted at 22 and carrying a roller 24. The roller 24 engages a cam surface 29 on a lever 25 carrying the friction wheel 21 and driving gear therefor. A light, permanently acting, brake may be provided to engage the tray and may comprise a fibre stud 51 on a spring plate 52. The Specification describes means whereby, when the apparatus is provided with film stopping means for stationary projection. as described in Specification 232,298, a brake is applied to the tray when the film stopping lever is actuated. Fig. 6 shows a modification of the centre fitting wherein the vertical rollers, the guide, and a depending strip 40 are carried by a gapped circular plate 38, and the oblique roller 41 is adjustably mounted by means of a rod 42 held in a pillar 43 by a screw 44, the pillar being carried by a plate 45 pivoted at 45 on the transverse bar 46 corresponding to the bar 12. The plate 45 serves the purpose of the lever 16, being actuated, against the action of a spring 47, by the engagement of the film with the oblique roller 41, and having slots to engage pins 48 to limit its movement..
