Abstract
A container comprises a body (1) and a lid (2). A plurality of first thread portions (7) are formed on an annular neck (3) of the body and a plurality of co-operating second thread portions (8) are formed on an annular collar (4) of the lid for engaging the lid on the body. Co-operating teeth (9, 11) on the first and second thread portions prevent removal of the lid from the body when the co-operating thread portions are at least partially engaged and when an axial force is applied to the lid in the direction away from the body.
Description
CONTAINER
The invention relates to containers and, in particular, portable containers having a body and a lid.
A risk may arise in the case of relatively large portable containers, that the body may fall from the lid when the container is lifted by the lid. This is likely to occur if the lid is not properly engaged on the body and can cause damage or injury.
The present invention sets out to provide a container which can be safely lifted by the lid even when the lid is not properly secured.
Accordingly, the invention provides a container comprising a body and a lid, a plurality of first thread portions formed on an annular portion of the body and a plurality of co-operating second thread portions formed on an annular portion of the lid for engaging the lid on the body, and co-operating engagement means on at least some of the first thread portions and at least some of the second thread portions adapted to prevent relative rotation of the lid and the body to disengage the lid from the body when the co-operating thread portions are at least partially engaged and when an axial force is applied to the lid in the direction away from the body.
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a horizontal cross section of a container lid; and
Figure 2 is a side view of a container body.
A shown in Figures 1 and 2, the container comprises a body 1 and a lid 2. The body as shown is cylindrical but may have any other suitable shape. The body has an open top surrounded by an annular portion in the form of a neck 3. The lid 2 forms a closure for the container and is formed of an annular portion in the form of a collar 4, a circular panel 5 and a strap handle 6.
The lid is engaged on the body by means of a multi-start screw thread which is formed of a plurality of first thread portions 7 formed on the neck 3 and a plurality of second thread portions 8 formed on the collar 4. As shown, there are six first thread portions 7 and six second thread portions 8.
Each of the second thread portions 8 is provided with engagement means in the form of an upward facing row of ratchet teeth 9. To co-operate with the teeth 9, each of the thread portions 7 on the body is provided with an engagement means in the form of a downwardly facing hook or tooth 11 at its upper end, that is, the end which first engages the lid thread portions 8. The other end of each thread portion 7 is formed with a stop 12.
It will be seen that the circumferential lengths of the thread portions 7, 8 and the circumferential spacing therebetween are such that the lid can be placed on the container without the threads being engaged. From this position, rotation of the lid in a clockwise sense (as seen from above) causes the first and second thread portions to be engaged by virtue of the second thread portions 8 passing beneath the first thread portions 7.
When fully engaged, the leading (lower) ends of the lid thread portions 8 abut against the stops 12 on the body thread portions 7. An annular rib 13 prevents any further downward movement of the lid on the body.
Since the body thread portions 7 are longer than the lid thread portions 8, the teeth 11 are not in engagement with the teeth 9 when the lid is fully engaged on the body. The spacing between the teeth 11 and the rib 13 is such that the lid thread portions 7 can pass therebetween without engagement so long as the lid is held in its lowermost position with the thread portions 8 bearing against the rib 13.
In operation the lid is placed on the body such that the lid thread portions 8 pass downwardly between the body thread portions 7 and bear against the rib 13. The lid is then rotated in a clockwise sense until the thread portions 8 bear against the stops 12. The lid is then firmly engaged on the body. To remove the lid this operation is simply reversed.
If any axial force is applied to the lid in the direction away from the body, such as by lifting of the handle 6, undoing of the lid will be prevented by engagement of the teeth 11 with the teeth 9. This will be the case not only when the thread portions are fully engaged but also when they are only partially engaged.
Thus, so long as at least one of the teeth 9 on each lid thread portion 8 has passed under the tooth 11 on a respective body thread portion 7, lifting of the lid will cause engagement of the teeth 9 and 11 and will prevent relative rotation of the lid and the body to disengage the lid from the body.
The result of the above arrangement is such that accidents occurring as a result of the body being dropped when the lid is lifted by the handle 6 are substantially avoided.
A number of variations to the construction of the container will be readily envisaged. For example, it would be possible for a plurality of teeth to be formed on each of the body thread portions and/or for fewer or only one tooth to be formed on the lid thread portions. The teeth may also be replaced by other engagement means such as hooks. In some cases, only some of the lid thread portions and/or some of the body thread portions may be provided with engagement means.
The construction of the container may, of course, be varied considerably. In one alternative (not shown) the panel 5 is of concave part-spherical form with the strap handle extending horizontally thereabove. In this alternative, the panel may be formed as a separate piece of the lid which is mechanically held in place.
Claims (6)
1. A container comprising a body and a lid,
a plurality of first thread portions formed on an annular portion of the body and a plurality of cooperating second thread portions formed on an annular portion of the lid for engaging the lid on the body, and
co-operating engagement means on at least some of the first thread portions and at least some of the second thread portions adapted to prevent relative rotation of the lid and the body to disengage the lid from the body when the co-operating thread portions are at least partially engaged and when an axial force is applied to the lid in the direction away from the body.
2. A container as claimed in Claim 1, where the cooperating engagement means comprise a plurality of teeth on some of the thread portions and at least one cooperating tooth on some of the other thread portions.
3. A container as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein each of the thread portions of the lid is formed with an upwardly facing row of ratchet teeth and each of the thread portions of the body is formed with a downwardly facing co-operating tooth at its end which first engages the upper thread portions.
4. A container as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first and second thread portions form a multi start thread and wherein the circumferential lengths of the thread portions and the circumferential spacing therebetween are such that the lid can be placed on the container without the threads being engaged.
5. A container as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising a handle attached to the lid.
6. A container substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
