Abstract

A laminate for use as a solar insert, solar blind or window film, is made up of two layers joined together by a light transmissive adhesive, one layer being metallised polypropylene film.

Description

LAMINATE The invention relates to the use of a laminate for use in a wide variety of applications involving heat absorption or insulation or both, e.g. as a solar insert.
Laminates of this type are known. They are used to manufacture clear view solar control blinds, and when modified by the addition of an adhesive, to bond against the glass, they can be used as solar films. Laminates of this type comprise of layers of transparent plastic film either metallised, tinted or clear which are bonded together using clear adhesive. The number of layers and the selected plastics will vary according to the circumstances.
One object of the invention is to improve the longwave or room temperature infra red reflection of these types of laminates and thereby to reduce the passage thereof via the surface of the laminate facing the interior of the room.
According to the invention in one aspect there is provided a substantially transparent laminate for use as or in solar inserts, solar blinds, window film or the like, comprising two layers of film at least one of which is polypropylene, a metallised layer being present on one side of the polypropylene film, the second layer facing the metallised layer, the two films being bonded together by a light transmissive adhesive.
Preferably the density of the metallised layer is selected so that the polypropylene film has a light transmissivity of about 2% to about 65%, most preferably 15%. The light transmissivity is measured in known way. The metallisation may cover all or only part of the film surface.
The polypropylene preferably is unplasticised, so that it may readily be metallised.
The second layer may be polypropylene or polyester.
The laminates may take a wide variety of forms. In one example the laminate is in sheet form to be positioned close to the inside or outside of a window as a blind. A layer of adhesive may be present on the outer face of the second layer film, so that the sheet may be adhered to a window.
In another aspect the invention provides a room having a window, covered by a laminate as defined and in sheet form, the laminate being arranged so that the second layer film faces the exterior and the polypropylene film the interior of the room.
The laminate may also be in tape form, preferably having a longitudinal fold so that the tape may be folded into generally L or U section.
In another aspect, the invention provides a conservatory roof or wall comprising a web of light transmissive plastics, the web having a plurality of parallel passageways, each containing a length of laminate tape in L or U section form.
In another aspect the laminate is suspended within, e.g. in the centre, of a double glazing unit.
In yet another aspect the laminate is bonded with adhesive to the inner or outer glass surface facing the cavity of a unit, and arranged so that the metallised layer faces into the cavity.
In order that the invention may be well understood it will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a laminate of the invention in sheet form; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of a laminate of the invention in tape form as a solar insert in a conservatory roof; and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a laminate of the incorporated in a double glazed unit.
The laminate L comprises a basic structure of a layer 1 of polyester or polypropylene film, joined by a thin layer of a light transmissive adhesive layer 2, which is joined to a metallised layer 3 on to a layer of polypropylene sheet or film 4. The adhesive may be an acrylic; the metallised layer may be of any of the conventional metals such as aluminium. The degree of metallisation is low, so that the laminate as a whole has a light transmissivity of about 2% to about 65% as measured using a spectrometer. The polypropylene film is unplasticised. A laminate sheet of the invention can be supplied with an adhesive layer A and a release paper layer R. In use, the release paper may be removed and the laminate then adhered to glass, not shown.
A laminate of the invention can be used as a solar insert, a solar blind, window film or suspended film within a double or multiple glazing unit, or a film bonded to either panel of a double or multiple glazed unit facing the cavity. Because there no adhesive between the polypropylene and metal layer (which absorbs heat) a laminate of the invention substantially improves winter insulation and summer heat rejection.
Investigations have shown that a laminate of the invention can reflect up to 90% of room temperature infra red, which would normally be lost to the outside, back into the room. As a result the effectiveness as a heat insulating medium is substantially improved.
A laminate of the invention may be cut and rolled into a tape form T to be inserted in a box section B of a conservatory polycarbonate roof shown in Figure 2. The tape T has two longitudinal folds F and F2 so that the tape can be formed into a generally U cross-sectional shape and inserted into a box section from one end thereof, in the manner described and claimed in my patent application EP 94.91005.1 [Agent's ref: P01298PCT(EP)]. When so inserted the arms of the U section are in contact with opposite side walls of the box section, and the bight may or may not be in contact with the floor. The tape may also be bent into L form.
As shown in Figure 3, the laminate L may be suspended between the layers of a double or multiple glazing unit. Alternatively the laminate may be adhered to the inner surface of either glass layer, with the metallised layer facing inwards.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown. Either film may be replaced by a functional equivalent, for example the polyester or polypropylene may be replaced by polycarbonate, acrylic, PVC, and possibly polystyrene.
