Flanges D facilitate fitting. An example of an assembly, Fig. 2, shows four superposed units with belllike headers at top and bottom, mounted in a casing adapted to cause series flow through the horizontal chambers as by baffles E. Examples of use cover, gases to be heated flowing as indicated at f<1> with waste furnace gases passing as at f<2>, gases to be heated through the vertical channels with a burner at F the products of combustion of which pass as at f<1>, and gases through f<2> acting chemically on solids placed in the vertical channels, heating gases passing as at f<1>.
