Abstract

An infrared colour sensor 1 or sensors is fitted underneath or within the engine compartment of a vehicle so as to point towards the road surface 6. The sensor will be activated by crossing over a white or coloured line or lane marker to activate an audible or visual warning 5 to the driver. The system may be switched on or off manually by switch 4 and may be linked to the indicator circuit or cruise control where fitted. The system would automatically switch off when indicators become active for overtaking and switch back on after the indicators have been cancelled.

Description

DRIVER SLEEP WARNING SYSTEM TIS INVENTION RELATES TO A DRIVER SLEEP WARNING SYSTEM Driver sleep warning systems are available at present and these usually comprise of either spectacles with sensors which detect a closing eyelid or a camera linked to a computer which monitors the drivers facial movements, or a helmet with a pendulum attached. These systems are either very costly, or are impractical. The above systems are activated by the condition of the driver of the vehicle.
My system is activated by the road position of the vehicle. My invention consists of an infrared colour sensitive sensor or sensors, which is fitted beneath the vehicle or within the engine compartment. It would be fitted pointing downwards towards the road surface and is activated by a colour change, meaning, when its beam senses from a black road to a white or coloured line. These lines would include lane markings, either to the vehicles left or right.
This in turn would operate a relay within a control box which in turn activates either an audible or visual or both warning to alert the driver that he or she is crossing over a white or coloured line. The system could be switched off manually when not needed but would be switched on during long distance or night driving. The system could also be linked to the vehicles indicator circuit so that when the system is switched on and the driver wishes to overtake, then the system would automatically switch off when the indicators become active and would switch back on when the indicators have been cancelled. The system could also be fitted to vehicles fitted with cruise control, meaning when the cruise control system is switched on, the driver sleep warning system would be switched on automatically. My system would also be useful when driving in fog as it would give a warning if the driver was to drift out of lane.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: The system is powered by the vehicles battery 2. The sensor 1 is activated when its beam senses a colour change from black on the road surface 6 this then activates a relay within the control unit 3 which in turn activates a warning device 5. The system is turned on or off using a switch 4 or in conjunction with indicators or cruise control.

Claims (9)

1 A driver sleep warning system which uses an external sensor which is activated by colour change and gives a warning when crossing over a line or lane marker. It may be switched on or off manually or automatically.
2. A driver sleep warning system as claimed in claim 1 where externally fitted infra-red colour sensitive sensor or sensors are used.
3. A driver sleep warning system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 where a colour sensor is activated by crossing over a white or coloured line on the road.
4. A driver sleep warning system in claim 2 or claim 3 where a colour sensor is activated by crossing over a lane marking to the vehicles left or right.
5. A driver sleep warning system as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4 where a colour sensor activates a relay within a control box which switches on an audible or visual warning
6. A driver sleep warning system as claimed in claim 4 or claim 5 where the system may be switched on or off manually.
7. A driver sleep warning system as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6 where the system may be switched on or off automatically by means of being linked to the vehicles indicator circuit.
8. A driver sleep warning system as claimed in claim 6 or claim 7 where the system may be switched on or off automatically by means of being linked to the vehicles cruise control system.
9. A drivers sleep warning system which would give a warning to the driver if the car was to cross over a lane marker in the event of driving in fog 10 A driver sleep warning system as described with reference to figures 1 - 6 of the accompanying drawing.
