Abstract

A pad is wrapped around an article and secured by an adhesive band (14) along one edge. It comprises a rectangular base layer (6) to which is secured, spaced from the outer edged thereof, an inner layer (8), the two layers being secured together to provide a pocket (10) between the two layers into which cushioning material such as macerated paper is located. Secured to one selvage (12) adjacent one side edge is a strip of double sided adhesive tape (14), extending the complete width of the pad, which is protected by a peel-off ship (16) of single sided adhesive tape. In use, an article to be protected is positioned generally centrally of the pad, and the peel-off strip (16) is removed. The pad is folded around the article, and the adhesive band (14) is used to secure the outer layer (6) to itself, enabling the bag to be retained in position around the uncle which it is protecting. If desired, the peel-off strip (16) may be used to further strengthen the securement of the pad in position around the article.

Description

Titlc: IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO PROTECTIVE PADS Description of Invention Materials for the protection of articles e.g. during transportation fall into two main categories, the first being the protective bag into which an article to be protected may be inserted, the second being the protective pad which in use is wrapped around the article to be protected. In general the protective bag is utilised for smaller articles, whilst the protective pad is utilised for ]arger articles.
Whilst an article may be inserted into a protective bag an secured therein e.g. by the use of a flap for the opening of the bag which may be secured to close the opening by the use of adhesive - in general pads are wrapped around the article and secured in position by the use of separate securing means, such as separate adhesive tape or by string.
According to this invention there is provided a protective pad comprising along one side edge thereof a band of adhesive.
In this way when the pad is folded around the article to be protected, the pad may be secured to itself by self-contained means.
The band of adhesive may be continuous or may be in the form of discrete portions of adhesive extending generally along a line adjacent to the side edge. If desired the band of adhesive may be protected by a peel-off strip, and conveniently the peel-off strip may itself be adhesive, allowing it to be used to secure the pad in place around the article being protected.
The self adhesive peel off strip may be perforated to ease tearing and application, and may be covered with a release tape to ease handling.
Alternatively the peel off strip may have a release coating on its top surface such that it will carry a piece of sticky tap (e.g. "Sellotape") which may if desired be perforated.
Alternatively a piece of sticky tape which may be perforated may lie adjacent to the band of adhesive or in another position on the pad. Conveniently it is applied on top of a release coating, such as a silicon spray, so that it may be removed from the pad more easily, and then used to secure other areas of the pad.
Conveniently however the band of adhesive is itself in the form of a strip, conveniently extending across at least one entire side edge of the pad, and may be afforded by double sided adhesive tape secured to the pad, preferably along a selvage thereof. Thus the peel-off strip may be afforded by single-sided adhesive tape.
Preferably the pad is one comprising a base layer and a cushioning layer secured to the base layer over an extensive central region thereof, the cushioning layer providing protection to the article which is enclosed by the pad.
The cushioning layer may be resilient sheet material, such as flexible foam plastics material, or bubble material secured to the base layer so as to constitute the protective means of the pad, or any other convenient means.
Alternatively the cushioning layer may comprise a sheet of noncushioning material (such as Kraft) secured to the base layer over the central region thereof in a manner such as to provide in conjunction with the base layer a pocket into which cushioning means may be located, such as macerated paper, or a separate sheet of resilient plastics material.
There will now be given a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawing, of a protective pad which is a preferred embodiment of this invention, having being selected for the purposes of illustrating the invention by way of example.
The accompanying drawing is a schematic perspective view of part of the pad which is the preferred embodiment of the invention, one corner thereof having being cut away for the purposes of illustration.
The pad which is the preferred embodiment of this invention is generally rectangular, and comprises a rectangular base layer 6 conveniently afforded by a sheet of kraft having a weight of between 40 and 10 grammes.
Secured to the base layer 6, spaced from outer edges thereof, is an inner layer 8 conveniently also of Kraft, the two layers being secured together so as to provide a pocket 10 between the two layers into which cushioning materials such as macerated paper may be located.
Advantageously selvages 12 are provided extending around all four sides of the pad, said selvages being wider than conventional on at least one side, preferably on all four sides.
Secured to one selvage adjacent one side edge is a strip of double sided adhesive 14, extending the complete width of the pad, which in use is covered by a strip 16 of single sided adhesive, said strip 16 providing protection for the adhesive layer 14 and being in the form of a peel-off strip.
In use an article to be projected may be positioned generally centrally of the pad, and the peel-off strip 16 removed. The pad may be folded around the article, and the adhesive band 14 may be used to secure the outer layer 6 to itself, enabling the bag to be retained in position around the article by means which are wholly self contained.
If desired the peel-off strip 16 may be utilised to further strengthen the securement of the pad in position around the article.
If desired such securing means as is afforded by the strip 14 and strip 16 may be provided on all four edges of the pad.
It is to be appreciated that the invention if not limited to these are rectangular pads, and in deed a pad of any convenient shape may be utilised, provided that the pad has the facility to have applied thereto an elongate band of adhesive material.
Additionally whilst the pad which is the preferred embodiment of this invention is afforded by inner and outer layers 6 and 8 of Kraft, a pad could be provided by the use of an outer layer 6 (which may conveniently be a Kraft) having an inner layer of resilient plastics material, such as foam, or bubble material, which may be secured around but spaced from the periphery of the base sheet 6 by heated rollers so as to secure the resilient layer to the base layer and simultaneously provide a selvage or salvages to which the adhesive tape strips 14 and 16 may be secured.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
