Abstract

A steel sheet pile comprising two side walls (12) and a central transverse rib plate (16) connecting the said walls with each other. At least one of the side walls has a guide rail (22) adjacent one edge of the side wall and a plate member (24) on said one surface adjacent the other edge of the side wall. There is a groove (26) in the plate member adapted to engage the guide rail of another sheet pile. One of the side walls may be provided with engagement means (30) for engaging the guide rail (22) of another sheet pile so that the two sheet piles are at right angles to one another.

Description

2315291 PATENTS ACT 1977 P11556GB-NF/WA/1p "Improvements In Or Relating To
a Sheet Pile" THIS INVENTION relates to a sheet pile, and more particularly to an H pile.
Usually, a plurality of steel H piles are closely spaced and driven vertically into the ground to obstruct lateral movement of earth or water, and often to form an integral part of a permanent structure.
It is, however, very hard to drive steel H piles into the ground closely to each other without a gap forming between them.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved sheet pile.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a sheet pile comprising two side walls and a central transverse rib plate connecting said side walls with each other, at least one of the side walls having a guide rail on one surface adjacent one edge of said side wall and a plate member on said one surface adjacent the other edge of said side wall, there being a groove in the plate member adapted to engage the guide rail of another sheet pile.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a steel sheet pile comprising two side walls, a central rib plate connecting said side walls with each other, a guide rail secured to one surface of each of said side walls at the near position to one edge of said side wall, a plate member secured to one surface of each of said side walls at the near position to the other 2 edge of said side wall, and a groove formed in said plate member.
A preferred non-limiting embodiment of the present invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partially cut away view in perspective of a first embodiment of a steel H pile according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a schematic plan view illustrating a plurality of the piles shown in Figure 1 which are connected with each other.
Figure 3 is a schematic plan view illustrating a pile of a second embodiment according to the present invention; Figure 4 is a schematic plan view illustrating a pile of a third embodiment according to the present invention; and Figure 5 is a schematic plan view illustrating a construction of steel piles connected together.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the drawings. As shown in Figure 1, a steel H pile 10 is formed from a pair of side walls 12, 14 and a central transverse rib plate 16 connecting the mid-regions of the side walls with each other.
On the inner surface 13, 15 of each of the side walls 12, 14, there is provided a guide rail 22 at a position adjacent to a side edge 18, 20 of each side wall 12 and 14. Each guide rail 22 extends axially the full length of the side wall of the pile 10. The guide rails 3 are inwardly directed and are directly opposed to each other.
on the inner surface 13, 15 of each side wall 12, 14, adjacent the other side edge 19, 21 there is provided a plate member 24 having an axially extending and outwardly facing groove 26 in which the guide rail 22 of an adjacent pile 10 can be inserted. Each groove 26 is of a configuration that corresponds with a profile of a guide rail 22.
The above-mentioned guide rails 22 and plate numbers 24 may be welded to, or formed integrally with the side walls 12, 14.
In a first embodiment of the present invention, as shown in Figure 2, after a first pile 10A has been driven vertically into the ground, the grooves 26 and the two plate members 24 of a second pile 10B can be engaged with the guide rails 22 of the first pile 10A. The second pile 10B can then be driven into the ground.
Thus, the said other side edges 19, 21 of the first pile 10A are placed in close contact with the side edges 18, 20 of the second pile 10B.
In a second embodiment of the present invention, as shown in Figure 3, an axially extending guide rail 22 is secured to the outer surface of each of the side walls 12, 14 at a position adjacent the side edge 18, 20. The rails thus extend outwardly in opposite directions. A plate member 24 having an axially extending and inwardly facing groove 26 is also secured to the outer surface of each of the side walls 12, 14 adjacent the other side edge 19, 21. The groove 26 is adapted to engage the guide rail 22 of 4 another sheet pile 10. Two piles as shown in Figure 3 may be interconnected in a manner analogous to that shown in Figure 2.
In a third embodiment of the present invention, as shown in Figure 4, a sheet pile is provided with engagement means 30 on the outer surface of one of the side walls 12.. The engagement means 30 comprise a pair of axially extending shaped plate members. The shaped plate members are of an I'Ll'-shape cross-section and comprise an outwardly extending portion and an end portion. The outwardly extending portion is connected, at one end, to the side wall 12 and projects perpendicularly therefrom. The other end of the outwardly extending portion terminating in the end portion which is parallel to the side wall 12. The two shaped plate members are arranged so that their respective end portions extend away from each other. The shaped plate members are of a shape adapted to engage with the guide rails 22 of another sheet pile as shown in Figure 5.
Referring to Figure 5, a construction is illustrated which comprises a first sheet pile 10A, of the third embodiment connected at right angles to a second sheet pile 10B. The shaped plate members of the first sheet pile 10A are engaged with the guide rails 22 of the second sheet pile 10B. In this manner, the guide rails 22 are captured under the respective end portions of the shaped plate members.
In the light of the above, it is to be understood that the preferred embodiment of the present invention provides a steel H pile which can be easily driven into the ground in connection with an adjacent steel H pile without making a gap between them.
It is also to be understood that the preferred embodiment of the present invention provides a construction of steel H piles which can be connected to one another at right angles if desired.
While preferred embodiments of the invention are described it is to be understood that modifications will occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. The scope of the present invention is therefore to be determined solely by the appended claims.
