Abstract
A cover 6 for a rolling bearing comprises a peripherally-extending locating element 10, which is a snap-fit in a radial groove 7 in the bearing race 3. The cover also comprises peripherally-spaced, radially-directed projections 11, which bear under preloading against the circumferential surface 5 of the race, and serve to prevent relative rotation between the cover and the race. The cover is made in one piece from plastics material.
Description
COVER FOR BEARINGS
The invention relates to a cover for bearings.
Covers of this type are used for protecting roller bearings or pivotal mountings of tensioning devices from the ingress of dirt, water, etc. For example, they are secured to the outer ring or builtin component of the bearing by snap-fit members. A simple solution has been found to be a radial groove into which are snap-fitted locating members of the cover which is injection-moulded in one piece from plastics material. The radial groove is usually provided with inclined abutment surfaces, whereby the cover is stabilised and a satisfactory seal is achieved. The shape of the cover is adapted to the installation conditions and may be disc-shaped or cupshaped, whereby the entire bearing chamber and the end face of the axis, etc. is covered.
DE-GM 93 20 478, for example, discloses a cover but without an annular groove on the mounting.
To prevent the cover from rotating in the annular groove and thereby creating an unreliable seal, a powerful radial clamping action is to be achieved by suitable choice of dimensions. However, this renders fitting more difficult and often leads, unobserved, to damage to the cover and thereby to an inadequate seal.
The invention has the object of devising a cover of the type mentioned in the introduction, which can be installed so that it is reliably prevented from rotation but assures a uniformly satisfactory seal and easy fitting.
This object is achieved by radially directed retaining projections which are spaced apart on the periphery, which bear, under preloading, against a circumferential surface of the mounting and which act in a manner precluding relative rotation.
The invention therefore provides a cover for bearings of tensioning devices or the like, with locating elements extending over the periphery and engaging in a radial groove, with portions for centering and axially abutting the mounting, characterised by radially directed retaining projections which are spaced apart on the periphery, which bear, under preloading, against a circumferential surface of the mounting and which act in a manner precluding relative rotation.
The features of the invention will be described below with reference to one example of an embodiment illustrated in the drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a partial longitudinal section through a tensioning pulley with a cover;
Fig. 2 shows an enlarged view of the fastening according to detail X in Figure 1; and
Fig. 3 shows a partial cross-section along the line A-A in Figure 2.
The tensioning pulley illustrated in the drawings (not shown in detail) is mounted with an inner ring 1 on a support stud 2 and on an outer ring 3 is provided with an outer running surface 4. A part of the circumferential surface 5 of the outer ring 3 is left free and is provided for receiving a cover 6.
For this purpose a radial groove 7 is incorporated in the outer ring 3.
The cover 6 is substantially cup-shaped with a flat peripheral portion 8 and is made in one piece from plastics material. A cylindrical extension 9 is formed integrally thereon, on the bore surface of which there is an annular radial projection 10 of a shape adapted to the profile of the annular groove 7.
As is more clearly evident from Figures 2 and 3, retaining projections 11, spaced apart on the periphery, are provided between the radial projection 10 and the peripheral portion 8. The retaining projections 11 are relatively narrow in a peripheral direction and are wedge-shaped. In the example of one embodiment illustrated three of these retaining projections 11 are disposed offset by 120 degrees.
When fitting the cover 6, the cylindrical extension 9 is initially widened via a lead-in slope 12 within the elastic region of the plastic material.
When pushed on further the radial projection 10 engages with the radial groove 7 and draws the cover 6 over the inclined groove surfaces of the radial groove 7 until the peripheral portion 8 abuts against the lateral surface of the outer ring 3.
The strong restoring forces of the flared cylindrical extension 9 induce an almost complete deformation of the three small-volume retaining projections 11 on the relevant portion of the circumferential surface 5 of the outer ring 3. In this way an exceptionally powerful surface pressure occurs at the three peripheral locations in combination with the outer ring 3 and, therefore, a very effective force-locking antirotational feature is provided.
In addition to the aforementioned annularly closed shape of the cylindrical extension 9 and of the radial projection 10, they can also be divided into individually acting portions by separating slots.
