Abstract

A waterproof working glove having a hand and wrist portion (10) moulded from a strong but flexible PVC and produced by placing a woven fabric glove in a mould and then impregnating the glove with an outer PVC coating, and a sleeve portion (12) forming an extension of the wrist portion (10) and joined thereto by a welded seam (11), the sleeve portion (12) being of increased flexibility with respect to the hand and wrist portion (10) and having an elasticated hem (14) thus to grip the wearer's arm above the elbow.

Description

A WORKING GLOVE THIS INVENTION concerns a waterproof working glove adapted for use by people who in a work application must protect not only the hands and wrists but also at least a part of the or each arm up to and beyond the elbow. The glove must be sufficiently durable to protect the user against physical injury and/or heat or chemicals but must be sufficiently flexible to enable adequate forearms, wrist and finger manipulation.
Conventionally, strong waterproof working gloves extend in gauntlet style over the wrist but do not extend as far as the elbow.
According to the present invention a waterproof working glove having a hand portion and a wrist portion extending therefrom is characterised in that the wrist portion is of sufficient length to enclose at least a part of the wearer's arm above the elbow.
Preferably, the glove further comprises a moulded flexible PVC hand and wrist portion produced by placing a woven fabric glove in a mould and impregnating the glove with an outer PVC coating, and a sleeve portion forming an extension of the wrist portion, the sleeve portion being of increased flexibility with respect to the hand and wrist portion, and having and elasticated open end thus to grip the wearer's arm above the elbow.
Still further, the sleeve portion is preferably of a PVC impregnated fabric.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a waterproof working glove comprising a hand and wrist portion 10 produced by a conventional method including placing a woven cotton gauntlet in a mould and impregnating the glove with an outer PVC coating. The coating is of a suitable thickness to withstand the physical and chemical hazards to which the glove is to be subjected whilst ensuring adequate manipulation of the thumb and fingers.
Stitched and welded at 11 to the open end of the hand and wrist portion 10 is a sleeve 12 formed with a longitudinal weld 13, from a material being a woven cotton or other fabric which is impregnated with an outer coating of PVC, i.e. of approximately 22 gauge and having increased flexibility with respect to that of the hand and wrist portion 10.
At its open end, the sleeve 12 is provided with an elasticated hem 14.
When worn, the glove extends upwardly beyond the wearer's elbow and if required, up to the shoulder. The length of the sleeve 12 may be selected accordingly but the weld 11 is disposed below the elbow whereby the greater flexibility of the sleeve 12 affords the user complete manoeuvrability of the arm.
Typically, the length of the glove from the tip of the fingers to the weld 11 is in the region of 36 cms whilst the sleeve portion 12 may be in the region of 29 cms in length providing an overall length of 65 cms. A number of sizes may be provided to afford a comfortable fit for the wearer. The width of the welded seam 11 is preferably in the region of 6 mm to provide adequate strength and to ensure integrity of the waterproof nature of the article.
The glove is constructed with a moulded hand and wrist portion since it is difficult, if not impossible, to produce finger formations with edge welding, without the need for excessive loose margins of material within the glove. The sleeve portion 12, however, may be produced by welding at 11 and 13 since these are substantially straight welds.
If required, in the hand portion, the palm and inner faces of the fingers may be of increased thickness or formed with a roughened surface to assist grip.
A glove made in accordance with the invention has many uses both industrial and commercial as well as in domestic applications, and the thickness and durability of the hand and wrist portion 10 may vary according to the intended use.
While the sleeve portion 12 is preferably of a more flexible and thus different material from that of the hand and wrist portion 10, in some applications the two portions may be of the same or very similar characteristics.
In certain circumstances the entire glove may be integrally formed from a single material having sufficient length to extend above the wearer's elbow and, again, preferably having an elasticated top to hold the open-end of the sleeve portion in position on the upper part of the wearer's arm.

Claims (7)

1. A waterproof working glove having a hand portion and a wrist portion extending therefrom; characterised in that the wrist portion extends to a sleeve portion of sufficient length to enclose at least a part of a wearer's arm above the elbow.
2. A working glove according to Claim 1, wherein the hand and wrist portion is of flexible PVC and produced by placing a woven fabric glove in a mould and impregnating the glove with an outer PVC coating, the sleeve portion forming an extension of the wrist portion and being of increased flexibility with respects to the hand and wrist portion and having an elasticated open end thus to grip the wearer's arm above the elbow.
3. A working glove according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the sleeve portion is of a PVC-impregnated fabric.
4. A working glove according to any preceding claim, wherein the sleeve portion is stitched and welded to an open end of the hand and wrist portion at a position thereon to be disposed in use below the user's elbow.
5. A working glove according to any preceding claim, wherein its length from the tip of the fingers to the top of the hand and wrist portion is in the region of 36 centimetres, and the sleeve portion is in the region of 29 centimetres in length thus to provide an overall length of glove in the region of 65 centimetres.
6. A working glove according to any preceding claim, wherein the palm and inner faces of the fingers of the glove are of increased thickness or formed with a roughened surface to assist grip.
7. A working glove according to Claim 1, wherein the hand and wrist portion and the sleeve portion are integrally formed from a single material.
