Description

PACKING CASES This invention relates to packing cases. The invention is particularly concerned with packing cases for housing delicate components such as electric equipment and can incorporate shock-absorbing foam materials for protection against vibration or impact.
Such packing cases may be provided with a plurality of bottom supports or feet, and the invention provides a packing case with an improved form of bottom supports.
According to the present invention, a packing case is provided with a plurality of bottom supports, each support comprising a lower plate disposed beneath the bottom of the case, a resilient structure of annular form disposed between the lower plate and the bottom of the case, and a tie-rod extending from the bottom of the case, through the resilient structure to the lower plate to connect with the lower plate by a coupling operable to allow movement of the lower plate towards the bottom of the case without corresponding movement of the tie-rod.
The coupling preferably comprises a member of top-hat section, providing a recess for a nut secured to the bottom of the tie-rod.
The upper end of the tie-rod is preferably provided with a head formed with spikes which engage with the internal surface of the bottom of the case.
An upper plate is preferably provided between the resilient structure and the external surface of the bottom of the case.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a fragmentary side view in medial section.
With reference to the drawing, a packing case 1 is provided with a plurality of spaced apart bottom supports 2 or feet, one only being illustrated, resting on a floor surface 10.
Each support 2 comprises a lower plate 3 disposed beneath the bottom or base 4 of the packing case 1, a resilient structure 5 of annular form disposed between the lower plate 3 and the bottom 4 of the case 1, and a tie-rod 6 extending downwardly from the bottom 4 of the case, through the resilient structure 5, to the lower plate 3, to connect with the lower plate by a coupling 7 operable to allow upward movement of the lower plate 3 towards the bottom 4 of the case 1, (see arrow 11), without corresponding movement of the tie-rod 6.
Additionally, an upper plate 8 is provided, disposed between the resilient structure 5 and the external surface 9 of the bottom 4 of the case 1.
The packing case 1 is of wooden construction comprising not only the bottom 4, which is of two-part form, but also back, sides, front and top panels, (not shown) secured together in a demountable manner.
The bottom 4 comprises an upper, relatively thin panel 15, and a lower, relatively thick, panel 16.
The resilient structure 5 is of hollow form, comprising foam plastics material.
The tie-bolt 6 has a head 17 formed with a ring of downwardly extending spikes 18 which engage with the internal surface 19 of the bottom 4 of the case 1.
The coupling 7 comprises a washer member 20 of top-hat section, disposed within the centre of the lower plate 3, which is of annular form. The interior of the washer member 20 provides a recess 21 for a nut 22 secured to the bottom end of the tie-rod 6, which end is screw-threaded.
It will be seen that the coupling 7 is a loose coupling, whereby the recess 21 provides space for movement of the nut 22 and lower end of the tie-bolt 6 relative to the plate 3, (whereby the resilient structure 5 is compressed).
Were it not for the washer 20 and its recess 21, a more rigid arrangement would result, whereby any upward movement of the lower plate 3, could result in the tie-bolt 6 being pushed upwardly, into the interior of the packing case 1, where it could damage the contents thereof.

Claims (8)

1. A packing case provided with a plurality of bottom supports, each support comprising a lower plate disposed beneath the bottom of the case, a resilient structure of annular form disposed between the lower plate and the bottom of the case, and a tie-rod extending from the bottom of the case, through the resilient structure to the lower plate to connect with the lower plate by a coupling operable to allow movement of the lower plate towards the bottom of the case without corresponding movement of the tie-rod.
2. A packing case as claimed in claim 1, wherein the coupling comprises a member of top-hat section, providing a recess for a nut secured to the bottom of the tie-rod.
3. A packing case as claimed in claim 2, wherein the upper end of the tie-rod is provided with a head formed with spikes which engage with the internal surface of the bottom of the case.
4. A packing case as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein an upper plate is provided between the resilient structure and the external surface of the bottom of the case.
5. A packing case as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the resilient structure is of hollow form.
6. A packing case as claimed in claim 5, wherein the resilient structure is of foam plastics material.
7. A packing case as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the upper and lower plates are of wood.
8. A packing case, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
