Description

ImProvements relating to Mountinq Arranqements Where a member is to be mounted onto another part in such a way that that member will exert a pull on the part providing the mounting then, over a period of time, tearing of the material on the main body can occur, particularly where thin metal is used.
According to the present invention there is provided a mounting for receipt of a member which will exert a pull on the mounting, and comprising a plate, with a mounting slot formed therein by cutting out part of the plate and folding back the cut material to underlie the remainder of the plate to strengthen the location of the member at the folded back edge of the cut out plate material.
The folding back of the cut out plate material to underlie the remainder of the plate effectively gives a double thickness mounting for the member which will exert a pull and this will significantly reduce the possibility that damage will occur.
The plate may project from a side wall of a support body. For increased strength of the whole unit, the free edge of the plate may rest on the other side wall of the support body. The support body itself may, for example, be a drive head of a windscreen wiper assembly.
The invention further extend to a mounting of this invention as hereinbefore defined in combination with a biasing spring having a hook which locates within the mounting slot of the mounting.
The invention may be performed in various ways and some preferred embodiments will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure i is a perspective view of a drive head of a windscreen wiper assembly; Figure 2 is an underneath view of one form of modification to the drive head of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a sectional view on line III-III of Figure 2; and Figure 4 is an underneath view of an alternative form of modification of a drive head of this invention.
The windscreen wiper assembly drive head 1 shown in Figure 1 will be mounted onto a drive shaft of a motor by means of a shaped recess 2. At the other end of the drive head aligned passageways 3 are formed for a pivot pin for a windscreen wiper assembly. Conventionally the wiper arm is additionally linked to the drive head by a spring which allows the wiper arm to be pivoted to an outward position where it will be held by the spring. The spring has a hook at one end which locates onto a mounting on the drive head 1. In accordance with this invention the mounting for the hook on the spring is provided by cutting a slot 4 in a plate 5 extending from one of the side walls 6 of the drive head 1. The plate material forming the slot 4 is folded back to underlie the main part of the plate 5 as shown at 7 in Figure 3. This provides a double thickness bearing point 8 for the hook on the end of the spring and thus reduces the possibility that the relatively thin plate material of the drive head 1 will become torn or distorted. Figure 3 also shows a notch 9 at the extreme end of the drive head 1 through which an extension of the spring can pass as the wiper arm is lifted.
As shown in Figure 4 the shape of the drive head may be varied as can the shape of the mounting plate 5. In this arrangement the free edge 10 of the plate 5 does not rest on one of the side walls 6 (as is the case with the arrangement of Figure 2). It will be appreciated that the precise positioning of the slot 4 and indeed the height of the plate 5 relative to the top wall 11 of the drive head 1 will have an effect upon the extent of the bias created by the spring.

Claims (7)

1. A mounting for receipt of a member which will exert a pull on the mounting, and comprising a plate, with a mounting slot formed therein by cutting out part of the plate and folding back the cut material to underlie the remainder of the plate to strengthen the location of the member at the folded back edge of the cut out plate material.
2. A mounting according to Claim 1, wherein the plate projects from a side wall of a support body.
3. A mounting according to Claim 1, wherein the free edge of the plate rests on the other side wall of the support body.
4. A mounting according to Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein the support body is a drive head of a windscreen wiper assembly.
5. A mounting according to any one of Claims 1 to 4, in combination with a biasing spring having a hook which locates within the mounting slot of the mounting.
6. A mounting according to Claim 5, wherein a notch is provided at the end of the support body for the mounting in which an extension portion of the spring can be received.
7. A mounting substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
