Abstract

The Safety system and valve designed in conjunction with the appropriate sensors is designed to prevent the build up of gas or carbon monoxide in domestic or commercial gas appliances which might be the cause of loss of life personal injury or damage to property whether from explosion or otherwise. It may be used in conjunction with appropriate sensors for all types of gas systems. It has a battery back up if there is a mains failure and can be incorporated into existing or new installations.

Description

The Coleman Sims Safety Valve 1.
The device is a domestic and / or industrial gas safety valve which can be used on the gas piping from the user's side of the supply. It is designed automatically (i) to cut off the supply of gas to any part of the system should there be a leak or dangerous build up of gas which could cause fire or explosion resulting in death or personal injury, or damage to property and (ii) to disconnect the system should excessive carbon monoxide be detected.
2.
The valve is operated by an electrically controlled 12 volt solenoid in conjunction with a 12 volt pre-set gas sensor unit incorporated in the design layout along with a control panel, a transformer, battery, warning lights, alarm and main switches. The battery is a standby electrical supply in case of a mains failure. There is a manual reset incorporated in the design. Pre-set sensors may be installed where required in the system. The valve is designed to be installed in pipework 204mm or smaller and can be utilised in flats, flatlets, bungalows, houses, mobile homes, caravans and industrial premises, thus ensuring complete safety from any leak, fault, or blocked up equipment or pipework. It can be also incorporated in the fire alarm system to cut off the gas supply in the event of fire.
3.
The gas safety valve is enclosed in a sealed unit so that in the event of an electrical fault or spark occurring there would be no danger of explosion or ignition of the gas the system will be shut down and the alarm activate.
4.
The use of the safety valve does not restrict the operation of the manually operated switches on any part of the system. The equipment can be easily installed in any new or existing system.
5.
Page 2 of3 shows the schematic layout of the system.
6.
Page 3 of 3 shows the internal system of the valve and control panel.
7.
The safety valve solenoid can be made to operate in the non-operative position and be activated by the pre-set sensor making a contact with the coil.

Claims (9)

1.
The Coleman Sims Safety system and valve (the valve) is designed to give warning should there be a leak or build up of gas or carbon monoxide fumes.
2.
The valve will cut off the supply at source should there be a leak or build up of gas or carbon monoxide and set off a warning bell or light.
3.
The valve is connected to the mains and the mains voltage is transformed down to 12 volts D.C.
4.
A 12 volt battery is installed to give back up should there be a mains failure and this back up gives a two hour protection and still allows the system to operate and should a longer period be required a larger ampere battery may be installed.
5.
The valve may be used on all types of gas supply along with the appropriate sensors.
6. The valve may also be used in mobile homes caravans and commercial properties.
7.
The valve gives protection against explosion or suffocation (and possible consequential loss of life injury or damage to property) due to gas leaks and build up of carbon monoxide by shutting down the system and sending a warning of the build up.
8.
The valve is used in conjunction with the apppropriate sensors placed in the required positions to pick up any leak or build up of gas or carbon monoxide.
9.
There is a relay installed in the system which can be automatically time delayed or manually operated (and which is an instant reaction and does not interupt the supply) to ensure the valve has no moisture or other contamination which might impair normal operation.
