Abstract

My invention is to put the pulse device 1 in a cot mattress 2 and pram mattress 3 so when the baby is laid on either of them the baby may feel as though it is still in the womb or being held by its parents.

Description

BABY 8LEE ING~AID The present invention relates to à baby sleeping aid and, in particular, to a device designed to assist or encourage babies to sleep in their cots.
A baby will often fall asleep in a person's arms.
However, when an attempt is made to lay the baby down in her cot, she often wakes up but falls back to sleep again when picked up.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of this problem and with the object of providing a baby sleeping aid which encourages a baby to sleep in her cot.
It has been found that the sound of a person's heartbeat comforts a baby when held or nursed in ones arms.
According to the invention there is provided a device for encouraging a baby to sleep comprising means adapted to simulate a person's heartbeat located in or on a mattress or similar bedding.
Thus, the invention provides a device for simulating the sound of a person's heartbeat in a baby's bed so that the baby will think that the person is still holding her and will be encouraged to sleep and/or sleep longer.
Similarly the baby may feel as though she is still in the womb.
The simulating means preferably comprises a pulse device, for example a sound pulse emitting device such as a speaker which may be powered and arranged to emit pulses at a given frequency, typically at the average heartbeat rate of an adult. Any suitable driving circuitry may be used. Preferably switch means is provided to allow the simulating means to be switched on or off as desired.
Preferably the simulating means includes a power source such as standard or rechargeable batteries. The simulating means may include or be adapted to be plugged into a suitable charging source to facilitate charging of the rechargeable batteries. Preferably the batteries are sealed into a casing or unit containing the simulating means. Visible indicator means, such as a light emitting diode, may be provided to indicate for example when the device is on or when the batteries need to be recharged.
The mattress may comprise a cot, pram or crib mattress and the simulating means is preferably embedded or encased in the mattress. Preferably the mattress is provided with a recess or aperture for receiving the simulating means. Typically the dimensions and shape of such recess or aperture will substantially correspond to those of the simulating means or unit. Preferably the depth of the recess or aperture is such as to allow the pulse device emission to be audible to a baby sleeping on the mattress.
Thus, the surface of the speaker may be on or adjacent the upper sleeping surface of the mattress.
Preferably the simulating means is located adjacent the end of the mattress on which the baby's head will rest. Preferably an infill piece is used to close the aperture when the simulating means has been located therein. It will be appreciated that conventional mattresses may be adapted to receive the simulating means.
Preferably any switch means, visible indicator means or charging input means are located on or near the surface of the mattress for easy access, typically on the edge adjacent the location of the simulatir.g means.
The speaker may be provided with a suitable grill for protection. Padding may be provided on the grill. Thus, for example the.padded grill may effectively close the recess or aperture formed in the mattress. The simulating means may be provided with a waterproof or water resistant casing to protect it against body fluid emissions.
The mattress may be a separate mattress or a mattress of the type which is an integral part of, for example, a pram.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1: shows the pulse device Figure 2: shows the cot mattress Figure 3: shows the cot mattress Figure 4: shows the pram mattress Figure 5: shows the pram mattress Refering to the drawing the pulse 1 will be placed inside the hole 5 and an infill piece 6 will be placed over in both the cot mattress 2 and the pram mattress 3. The mattresses 2/3 will be made to fit most cots and prams and they will be manufactured to meet all new safety laws. Both mattresses 2/3 will have a logo 4 on them and an on/off switch 8 and they will both come with a charging pack.
This key will help you to relate with drawing in which: 1 = Pulse device circuit 2 = Cot mattress 3 = Pram mattress 4 = Logo S = Hole where pulse device will be placed 6 = Infill piece 7 = Charging input socket 8 = On/off switch
