Abstract
A controller 10 for a ventilation or extraction fan 14 comprises a sensor 12 (e.g. a Hall effect sensor) which provides an output dependent upon the amount of electrical power drawn by an electrical appliance 16 (particularly a cooker hob for which the fan 14 is provided): the controller 10 is arranged to vary the speed of the fan 14 according to the output of the sensor 12.
Description
Fan Controller
The present invention relates to a fan controller intended for, but not limited to a cooker hob extraction fan.
In many circumstances, it is required to vary the speed of a fan in response to one or more environmental conditions.
An example is a cooker hob extraction fan, by means of which the undesirable build up of heat, water vapour and odours in the airspace surrounding the cooker may be alleviated.
It is known to provide a controller for such a fan which will vary its speed in response to an input from a temperature or a humidity sensor. However, a combination of such sensors would be required in order to fully take into account the range of conditions to be expected during the day to day operation of a cooker and these can require substantial amounts of work to fit.
We have now devised a fan controller which is of simple construction, is relatively easy to fit, and which functions in an effective manner.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a ventilation or extraction fan controller comprising sensing means for providing an output dependent upon the amount of electrical power drawn by an appliance, and arranged to vary the speed of a fan according to the output of said sensing means.
In use of this fan controller with an appliance which comprises a cooker hob, its function is based upon an approximate correlation which we have found to exist, between levels of excess heat and water vapour and the rate of electrical power consumption by the cooker.
Preferably the sensing means provides an output according to the amount of current drawn by the appliance.
Preferably the output of the sensing means is a variable voltage signal.
Preferably the sensing means comprises a Hall effect device.
Preferably the controller is arranged for varying the voltage supplied to the fan in order to vary its speed, either continuously or in discrete steps.
Preferab]y the controller further comprises manual override means for switching the fan on or off.
Preferably the appliance has a single phase 110 or 240v, or a three phase 400 or 440v electrical supply.
Preferably the controller is either external to or is integrated within the appliance.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a schematic diagram of an extraction fan controller in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a controller 10 and a Hall effect sensor 12 which supplies a low voltage output to the controller 10 which in turn varies the output voltage to a fan 14. Hall effect sensor 12 encircles the live cable L of a single phase supply having live, neutral and earth connections L,N,E to a cooker hob 16, and varies its output voltage according to the amount of current flowing in that cable. The use of such a device has the advantage of electrically isolating the control circuitry from the appliance supply and is relatively easily fitted.
In the specific embodiment illustrated, fan 14 operates from a voltage supplied by the controller directly, however it would remain in accordance with the present invention for the fan 14 to have an independent voltage supply controlled indirectly by the controller 10.
The power sensing fan controller, as described above, obviates the need for a plurality of enviromental sensors and their associated circuitry and provides an efficient electrically isolated control means for a ventilation or extraction fan.
