Description
COMPONENT IDENTITY
Security labelling of computer hardware components.
All computers and alot of peripherals have memory and processors.
These are the core elements that calculate tasks a computer is requested to do at the lowest level.
However these components which are easily removed on most modern day computers, allowing easy upgradeability are not distinguishable between two different machines of the same specification.
Example:
Three personal computers.
Two of which are made by company A: 486DX2/66 processor, 8MB
RAM - Intel processor, 2 off 4MB 72 pin SIMM's.
Third machine made by company B : 486DX2/66 processor, 8MB
RAM - Intel processor, 2 off 4MB 72 pin SIMM's.
On all three machines any of the processors or SIMM's could be
swapped and the machines would work and perform perfectly
normal. You could not prove they had been changed. I.E. All
components interchangeable.
Because of the above reason computer processor and memory theft is rife. Without any identity it is impossible to prove, purely from the components that they are stolen or to whom they belong. By the application of a security label or tag to these components, containing the identity of the owner, any component could be traced back to its owner.
The security labels are to contain a unique identification for each owner.
The attachment of the labels to the components (i.e. memory simm's and processor chips) should be by such a process to cause their removal difficult, if not impossible.
Claims (4)
1 The attachment of a security label to the computer component, with a
unique identity of the owner.
2 The attachment of the label to the component by such a process to
cause removal of the label impossible (without damaging the
component) or atleast extremely difficult.
3 The identification on the label to be used, if required to trace
ownership.
4 The use of a security label to stop copying.
