Description

Traffic Cone Conveyor This invention relates to a Traffic Cone Conveyor At present traffic cones are applied and removed from the road / highway surface manually. To apply cones to the road surface, persons are required to lift the cones out of the cone carrying vehicle and place them on the road surface. To remove the cones from the road surface persons are required to pick the cones off the road surface and place them in the cone carrying vehicle.
These operations can be dangerous when working on a road that is still being used by traffic. It can also be physically demanding involving repetitive bending and stretching.
The purpose of the Traffic Cone Conveyor is to make the applying and removing of traffic cones on the road / highway easier, faster, safer and more accurate.
By using the traffic cone conveyor to apply or remove the cones from the road surface the need for personnel to bend and stretch from the vehicle to retrieve or apply cones will be avoided thus making the process easier, this should also speed up the process as the person only has to load or unload the conveyor. The process should also be safer as the personnel can remain in the back of the vehicle reducing the risk of being hit by traffic using the road, accuracy should also be improved as the personnel do not have to estimate the distance between cones but use the markings on the conveyor.
The traffic cone conveyor is a device fitted to a vehicle which applies or removes traffic cones from the road surface. It is comprised of a frame, drive wheels, conveyor belt and scoop.
The traffic cone conveyor (see diagram A) is clamped (not shown) to the side of the truck or trailer (not shown) carrying the traffic cones. The top of the traffic cone conveyor pivots allowing the drive wheels (10) fitted to the bottom of the traffic cone conveyor to run along the road surface. The conveyor can be used to apply or remove cones from the road surface which would depend on the direction the vehicle was travelling and the way the traffic cone conveyor was pointing. The traffic cone conveyor would be driven by the friction between the road and the driving wheels (10) causing the driving wheels to turn, this in turn would drive a cog (not shown) connected to the conveyor belt (1 1 ) mechanism. The rotation of the driving wheels (10) would cause the conveyor belt (11) to either go up or down.
In the vehicle would be personnel who's job it would be to load or unload the traffic cone conveyor. The traffic cone conveyor would also be marked (12) with a series of dots to tell the personnel when to place the cones on the conveyor belt to achieve a certain spacing on the roadway i.e. 4 would mean four meters.
Two specific embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of examples with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Drawing B shows traffic cones being collected from the road surface.
Drawing C shows traffic cones being applied to the road surface.
Referring to drawing B the traffic cone conveyor is clamped (not shown) to the cone carrying vehicle with the driving wheels (10) pointing in the direction in which the vehicle is travelling. The movement of the vehicle would cause the driving wheels (10) to turn causing the conveyor belt (11) to ascend. The driver would steer the vehicle so that the scoop (14) would collect and guide the traffic cones onto the conveyor belt (11). On reaching the top personnel (not shown) would remove the cones and stack them in the back of the vehicle.
Referring to drawing C the traffic cone conveyor is clamped (not shown) to the cone carrying vehicle with the driving wheels (10) pointing in an opposite direction to that in which the vehicle is travelling. The movement of the vehicle would cause the driving wheels (10) to turn causing the conveyor belt (11) to descend. The driver would steer the vehicle so that the traffic cone conveyor would follow the intended line of cones. Personnel (not shown) located in the back of the vehicle would place the traffic cones on the conveyor belt (11) which would descend and unload the traffic cones onto the road surface. The scoop (14) would be detached so not to hinder the cones leaving the conveyor belt.
