Abstract
Two-layer fabric constructions are disclosed, one layer (2) being water-impermeable and the other of textile, particularly fur fabric (1). The layers are continuous and held together only at their edges, preferably by stitching (3), most preferably with an oversewn edging strip (4).
Description
MULTI-PURPOSE FLEXIBLE COVERING DEVICES
This invention relates to multi-purpose flexible covering devices.
For many years, waterproof covers have been used in a variety of applications, both to keep water off an underlying structure (for example tarpaulins) or to prevent water from coming into contact with watersensitive items from below, e.g. groundsheets for use in camping. Rubber or plastics materials have been used for such purposes to good effect. A problem with such sheet materials, however, particularly where the sheet materials are to be contacted by people, is their cold or clammy feel, which is generally seen as disadvantageous.
In dry conditions, a wide variety of textile fabrics is known for covering purposes. These are very comfortable to feel, particularly if the fabric is provided with surface texture providing it with a soft feel and improved thermal insulation properties. Pile or fur fabrics are widely known, but they in turn suffer from a major disadvantage that they cannot be used in wet conditions since then the fabric absorbs water, substantial quantities if it is of pile or fur construction, which renders the fabric unpleasant to feel and which may require substantial drying subsequently.
According to the present invention, there are provided two-layer fabric constructions consisting of a sheet of flexible water-impermeable material substantially contiguous with a sheet of textile fabric material, the two sheets being connected one to another substantially about a closed outer edge but not otherwise.
Preferably the two sheets of material are connected together by sewing, most preferably with an oversewn border tape running round the entire edge. Alternative methods such as gluing or, in some cases welding, can be envisaged, but they tend to be less preferred. The edging tape may be of conventional textile tape material, though it is on occasion highly advantageous to use a fairly water-repellent tape material, e.g. one woven from intrinsically water-repellent fibres or one which has been treated to increase its water repellency.
The sheet of water-impermeable material is preferably a relatively thin flexible sheet, for example of a textile fabric coated or impregnated with rubber or a polymeric material to provide a water-impermeable sheet. By the term water-impermeable, I mean that the sheet does not absorb water and accordingly that water falling on it, e.g. rain, simply stays on its surface or, if the surface is not perfectly horizontal, starts to run down once droplets of sufficient size are formed. The most preferred materials for use in the invention are polyvinyl chloride/fabric composites which are commercially available these days as clothing fabrics.
The other contiguous sheet of textile fabric may be chosen from a wide variety of textiles but is preferably chosen from relatively thick, relatively heat insulative textile materials. Woven blanket material may be used, but for many applications, the material choice is synthetic "fur fabric", i.e. fabric formed of a backing of woven or non-woven textile material into which have been woven or to which have been attached a very large number of hairs forming a fur or pile of depth, e.g. 5 to 15 mm.
It is preferred that the fabric be made wholly of synthetic fibrous material since this is generally easier to keep clean than natural materials. It also may show no tendency to shrink and accordingly to shrink differentially, e.g. after washing or other treatment, with respect to the water-impermeable sheet.
The size and configuration of the two contiguous sheets may be chosen according to the desired purpose. One or both sheets may be of an appropriate colour or, e.g., patterned. The water-impermeable material may be provided with a reflective layer, e.g. of aluminium "silvering", either for aesthetic or heat reflective reasons.
The variety of uses for the two-layer construction of the present invention is very substantial. Outdoor pursuits such as camping and walking often require waterproof materials, but ones which can be pleasant and warm to the touch. Suitably large units may be fashioned into a makeshift tent or bivouac. For sedentary pursuits when it is raining, for example fishing or bird-watching, a device in accordance with the invention may simply be placed over the user's head and body.
In more domestic applications, the structures in accordance with the present invention may find application as table covers which can be used with the waterproof side up when eating and from which any spillages can be simply mopped up, and which can then simply be turned over to present a fabric table cover in between meals. A particular area of value is in connection with beds, massage couches and the like where warmth and comfort are desirable, but without the difficulties of fluid absorption into a bed or couch covering, e.g. of massage oils.
The above uses are merely illustrative of the manifold uses of the two-layer fabric constructions in accordance with the invention.
By way of example, the accompanying drawing shows diagrammatically a cross-section on an enlarged scale of a unit in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, a sheet of fur fabric 1, for example 1 metres by 2 metres in size, is sewn at its edges to a sheet of lightweight water-impermeable PVC dress fabric 2 by means of stitching 3. The edges of the fabric are oversewn with an edging strip 4 which surrounds both of the fabrics as shown. The one side of the double unit, faced with fabric 2, is highly water repellent and can easily be sponged dry. The other side is of very warm, furry and comfortable feel.
