Abstract
A re-circulating ballscrew and nut device wherein one or more transverse grooves 16 are provided in the ballnut 10 in order to break the number of balls 14 held under load into at least two groups of smaller numbers. Preferably the groove 16 is disposed radially and is sufficiently wide to accommodate at least one ball in its entirety.
Description
Re-circulating Ballscrew and Nut Device
This invention relates to re-circulating ballscrew and nut devices.
Ballscrew and nut devices comprise, in general, a helical ball race containing a plurality of endlessly recirculating balls, the race being formed by a helical groove in a shaft and by a corresponding helical groove in the nut.
It is well understood that, when a considerable number of balls are held in such a device under an externally or internally applied load, inter-ball contact can become detrimental to the overall performance of the device.
In order to overcome this problem, the present invention is directed to a re-circulating ballscrew and nut device wherein one or more transverse grooves are provided in the ballnut in order to break the number of balls held under load into at least two groups of smaller numbers.
Preferably, the groove, or grooves, is or are arranged radially in the ballnut.
An example of a device in accordance with the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the body of the ballnut; and
Figures 2 and 3 are enlarged sections through the nut to illustrate two alternative forms of groove.
The ballnut 10 shown in Figure 1 is provided with an internal helical ballthread 12 which receives a plurality of balls 14 (one of which is shown in enlarged view in Figure 2 and in Figure 3) as is usual in ballscrew and nut devices. For the sake of clarity, the ballscrew shaft is omitted in Figure 1 but is shown partially in
Figures 2 and 3.
In order to break the number of balls held under an externally or internally applied load into a series of smaller numbers, at least one transverse groove 16 is provided in the ballnut body. Preferably, as shown in
Figure 1, this groove is disposed radially. The width of the groove needs to be such as to accommodate at least one ball in its entirety (see the width W in Figures 2 and 3) and of such a diameter as to contain the ball to a sufficient extent inside the helical groove 18 of the ballscrew shaft 20. The radial groove 16 may be of such a depth d as to exceed the root diameter of the ballthread (see Figure 2), or it may be of a slightly reduced depth as shown in Figure 3 but with a depression 22 so as to remove the contact area of the balltrack only.
By the simple expedient of providing the radial groove 16 in the ballnut body, the problem of reduced performance due to externally or internally applied loads is overcome.
Claims (6)
1. A re-circulating ballscrew and nut device wherein one or more transverse grooves are provided in the ballnut in order to break the number of balls held under load into at least two groups of smaller numbers.
2. A re-circulating ballscrew and nut device according to claim 1, in which the groove is disposed radially in the ballnut body.
3. A re-circulating ballscrew and nut device according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the groove is sufficiently wide to accommodate at least one ball in its entirety and of such a diameter as to contain the ball to a sufficient. extent inside the helical groove of a ballscrew shaft.
4. A re-circulating ballscrew and nut device according to claim 3, in which the groove is of such a depth as to exceed the root diameter of the ballthread.
5. A re-circulating ballscrew and nut device according to claim 3, in which the groove is of such a depth as to remove the contact area of the balltrack only by means of a depression in the groove.
6. A re-circulating ballscrew and nut device substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
