Abstract
A roof rack 12 for a vehicle 10 comprises a pair of roof bars 16, 18. Each roof bar 16, 18 comprises front and rear mounting members 30, 32 attached permanently to the vehicle roof 14, each supporting one end of a load bearing tubular bar 28 on a projection 38, 42. The rear mounting member 32 has a further projection 44 which can support one end of a roof bar extension 26, or be covered by a cap 46 when not in use.
Description
Vehicle Roof Racks
The present invention relates to vehicle roof racks, and in particular to fixed roof racks which take the form of bars or rails permanently mounted on vehicle roofs.
As fixed roof bars are normally attached to the vehicle during assembly, it can be a problem that the length and design of the roof bars does not meet the requirements of all purchasers of vehicles, some of whom will want long roof bars, and some of whom will consider them an unnecessary expense.
Accordingly the present invention provides a roof bar assembly for a vehicle comprising a load bearing part, securing means for securing the load bearing part to a vehicle, and supporting means at one end of the assembly for supporting one end of a roof bar extension.
Preferably the assembly further comprises cover means for covering the supporting means when it is not in use.
The supporting means preferably comprises a projection onto which a roof bar extension can be fitted. In this case the cover means may take the form of a cap.
Preferably the assembly comprises mounting means formed separately from the load bearing part and the support means is attached to, or even formed integrally with, the mounting means.
Preferably the assembly further comprises a roof bar extension comprising a load bearing part, securing means for securing the roof bar extension to a vehicle, and connecting means for connection to the supporting means.
Preferably the roof bar assembly further comprises a roof bar extension comprising a load bearing part, securing means for securing the roof bar extension to the vehicle, and connecting means for connecting the roof bar extension to the supporting means.
Conveniently the load bearing part of the extension comprises a tubular member, and the connecting means comprises the end of the tubular member which is arranged to fit onto the supporting means.
The present invention further provides a roof rack assembly comprising a pair of roof bar assemblies each being a roof bar assembly according to the invention. The roof rack assembly may further comprise at least one cross member extending between the roof bar assemblies.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic view of a roof rack assembly according to the invention mounted on a vehicle with an extension attached,
Figure 2 is a section through part of the assembly of
Figure 1 with the extension removed, and
Figure 3 is a section through the extension of Figure 1.
A vehicle 10 has a roof rack 12 mounted on its roof 14.
The roof rack 12 comprises a pair of parallel roof bars 16 18, sometimes referred to as rails, running along the sides of the roof 14, with cross beams 20, 22 extending between them. Each roof bar 16, 18 comprises a main section 24 and an extension 26 which can be attached to the rear end of the main section.
As can be seen best in Figure 2, the main section 24 of each roof bar 16, 18 comprises a load bearing tubular bar 28 supported at each end by a die cast mounting member 30, 32 which is attached to the vehicle roof 14 by screws 34.
The front mounting member 30 comprises a main body portion 36 with a rearward facing projection 38 of a cross section which corresponds to that of the interior of the tubular bar 28. The rear mounting member 32 comprises a main body portion 40 with a forward facing projection 42, also of a cross section which corresponds to that of the interior of the tubular bar 28. Each end of the tubular bar 28 fits over one of the projections 38, 42 which support it in position substantially parallel to the roof 14 and raised slightly above it. A rearward facing projection 44 is also provided on the rear mounting member 32 which is opposite opposite to the forward facing one 42 and aligned with it so that their axes are coincident. When the roof bar 18 is in the un-extended state, as shown in Figure 2, the rearward facing projection 44 on the rear mounting member 32 is covered by a moulded plastics cap 46 which is shaped so as to form a substantially continuous outer surface with the mounting member 32.
If the roof rack 12 is to be extended, the cap 4.6 is removed from each rear mounting member 32 so as to expose the rearward facing projection 44. The roof bar extensions 26, shown in section in Figure 3, together with the rear cross beam 20, are then attached to the roof rack. Each roof bar extension comprises a load carrying tubular bar 48 with one end 49 attached to an extension mounting member 50 and the other end 51 open. In this example the mounting member 50 on the extension 26 is shown as identical to those 30 at the front of the roof bars, although this may not always be the case. The section of the tubular bars 48 of the extension 26 is the same as that of the bars 28 of the main section of the roof rack. The open ends 51 of the roof bar extensions 26 are fitted onto the rearward facing projections 44 on the rearward main mounting members 32, and the extension mounting members 50 attached to the vehicle roof 14. The front ends of the roof bar extensions 26 are therefore supported by the rearward main mounting members 32 and the main roof bar sections 24 and the roof bar extensions 26 are aligned so that they form a continuous rail on each side of the vehicle.
The arrangement described enables the main section of the roof rack to be mounted on the vehicle during assembly and the extension to be supplied as an after market item.
