Abstract

A communications system CE, consisting of subscriber-connection units SLU1-6 for connecting terminals CT1-6, a network-connection unit SLMT and a switching unit SU having a switching control SC and a display-information memory DM, is described. The display-information memory contains in each case the display information allocated to the individual subscriber-connection units. A special subscriber-connection unit SSLU1 having associated display information is provided. This special subscriber-connection unit can if necessary be configured as a call diversion target for any subscriber. In the case of call diversion to this special subscriber-connection unit, if the calling terminal contains a display unit, the display information which is allocated to the special subscriber-connection unit is displayed at the calling subscriber. If the switching control does not recognise that the calling subscriber has a display unit, a call diversion to another target SSLU2 or SLU7, for example an acoustic announcing device or to a switching location, is activated.

Description

COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM The invention relates to a communications system consisting of: a plurality of subscriber-connection units for connecting communications terminals; and of a switching unit including a switching matrix and a switching control for setting up and disconnecting connections and for realising various user facilities including a user facility of call diversion, which in each case can be activated for a certain subscriberconnection unit, in order to divert incoming calls to another selected subscriber-connection unit, and including a user facility for transmitting display information, which is contained in a display memory and relates to the subscriber-connection unit which is called, to a calling connection unit if the switching control recognises that a communications terminal having a display unit is connected to the calling connection unit.
Such a communications system is known from the book ISDN im Buro-HICOM, special edition, Telecom report und Siemens Magazin COM of the Siemens Aktiengesellschaft, Berlin and Munich, 1985. There, the hardware and the software structure of such a system is described on pages 50 to 66, and in addition, the user facilities which are required in a system of the generic type are described on page 40, right hand column last paragraph-page 41.
The present invention seeks to expand a communications system of the generic type in a simple way in terms of its functionality, in such a way that in special situations, calling subscribers receive additional items of information about the subscriber who is being called.
According to the present invention, there is provided a communications system, comprising: a plurality of subscriber-connection unit for connecting communications terminals; a special subscriber-connection unit having associated display information in a display memory; and a switching unit, including a switching matrix and a switching control, for setting up and disconnecting connections and for realising call diversion, which in each case can be activated for a certain subscriberconnection unit, such that in the case of the activation of a call diversion for a subscriberconnection unit to the special subscriber-connection unit, if the switching control recognises that a communications terminal having a display unit is connected to the calling connection unit, the call diversion to the special subscriber-connection unit is carried out and the display information which is allocated to said special subscriber-connection unit is transmitted to the calling communications terminal, and that otherwise a call diversion to another device is carried out.
A communications system in accordance with the invention has a plurality of subscriber-connection units for connecting communications terminals.
Advantageously, the communications system in accordance with the invention has also at least one networkconnect ion unit for connecting the communications system to a communications network. Apart from this, the system has a switching unit including a switching matrix and a switching control for setting up and disconnecting connections from and to the subscriberconnect ion units or the network-connection unit and for realising various user facilities, i.e. in order to influence the switching-oriented states of the terminals which are connected by way of the subscriberconnection units. One of the user facilities which is made available by t..e switching unit is the user facility of call diversion, which in each case can be activated for a certain terminal or for the associated subscriber-connection unit, in order to divert incoming calls to another selected subscriber-connection unit or to the terminal to which it is connected. Another user facility which is made available by the switching unit SU intends to transmit to a calling communications terminal, as long as the latter has a display device, display information which is contained in a display memory and relates to the terminal which is called or to the corresponding subscriber-connection unit.
In accordance with the invention, in such a communications system, a special subscriber-connection unit having associated display information in the display memory of the communications system is provided. The switching control is constructed in accordance with the invention in such a way that in the case of a call diversion for a subscriber-connection unit to this special subscriber-connection unit, if a communications terminal having a display unit is connected to the calling connection unit, the switching control carries out this call diversion to the special subscriber-connection unit and transmits the display information which is allocated to the special subscriber-connection unit to the calling communications terminal, and that, if no communications terminal having a display unit is recognised at the calling connection unit, a call diversion to another device is carried out.
A communications system in accordance with the invention consequently makes it possible to send an item of information to a calling terminal having a display unit if appropriate, namely if a call diversion to the special subscriber-connection unit is activated for the terminal which is called or for the associated subscriber-connection unit, without having to receive the call.
If, for example, the display information which is allocated to the special subscriber-connection unit is the character combination "holiday" or ill", then during the holiday time of a subscriber, or in the event of the subscriber being ill, a call diversion to this special subscriber-connection unit can be carried out in order to achieve the display of this information on the display unit of a terminal calling this subscriber.
If the calling terminal is not recognised as a terminal having a display unit because it is a digital terminal without a display unit, an analogous terminal or an external terminal connected via a communications network, for example, then in accordance with the invention, a call diversion to another device is carried out in order to be able to receive the incoming call.
This other device can, for example, be an announcing device for reproducing a certain item of audio information. This can if necessary be a special announcement, which accordingly conveys the display information of the special subscriber-connection unit; however, a general announcement, such as, for example, "subscriber cannot be reached", can also be transmitted.
In a favourable development of the invention, the switching control effects a call diversion to an announcing device if it recognises that a communications terminal having an audio-reproduction device but not a display unit is connected to the calling connection unit.
In a favourable development of the invention, if the switching control does not recognise that a terminal having a display unit is allocated to the calling connection unit, a call diversion to a subscriber-connection unit having a connected communications terminal takes place. This communications terminal can, for example, be the terminal of a representative of the subscriber for whom the special call diversion has been activated. Apart from this, this terminal can be a switching location.
In particular, if the switching control recognises that the calling connection unit is the networkconnection unit, then in a sensible development of the invention, a call diversion to a manned communications terminal or to a call answering device is carried out.
In a particularly favourable development of the invention, in the case of a call diversion of an incoming call to a manned subscriber-connection unit having a terminal provided with a display unit, if the call diversion has not been carried out to the special subscriber-connection unit because there is no display unit at the calling terminal, an item of information about the called subscriber-connection unit and the display information of the special subscriberconnect ion unit are displayed on the display unit of the communications terminal which receives the call.
If, for example, the display information which is allocated to the originally called subscriberconnect ion unit is the signature "Meier" and the display information which is allocated to the special subscriber-connection unit is the character combination "is ill", then a subscriber receiving the call for the subscriber "Meier" receives on the display unit of his terminal the information "Meier is ill".
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it may be brought into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, which shows in a block circuit diagram a communications system in accordance with the invention, which communications system is connected to a global communications network GN and a server SERVER.
The communications system CE shown in the Figure has a switching unit SU, in which a switching device SW and a switching control SC are provided. The switching control SC contains, among other things, a central control CC, a signalling unit SI, a data base DB, a display memory DM and an interface arrangement IF for connecting a server. The switching control controls the switching device SW in order to set up and disconnect connections between the inputs of the switching device SW.Connected to inputs of the switching device SW are: a network-connection module SLMT having two network-connection units TLU1 and TLU2; a digital subscriber-connection module SLMD having subscriber-connection units SLU1, SLU2, SLU3 and SLU4; an analogous subscriber-connection module SLMA having subscriber-connection units SLUS and SLU6; and also a digital subscriber-connection module SLMD having subscriber-connection units SLU7 and special subscriber-connection units SSLU1 and SSLU2. The subscriber-connection modules and network-connection modules SLMT, SLMD, SLMA, including the connection units TLU1, TLU2, SLU1 to SLU7 and SSLU1 as well as SSLU2, are controlled by the switching control SC.
Connected to the subscriber-connection units SLU1, SLU2, SLU3 and SLU4 are respective digital terminals CT1, CT2, CT3 and CT4 having an audio-reproduction device AU. The terminals CT1, CT2 and CT3 each contain furthermore a display unit DU. Connected to the subscriber-connection units SLUS and SLU6 is a respective communications terminal CT5, CT6 having an audio-reproduction device AU. In the exemplary embodiment shown in the Figure, the special subscriberconnect ion unit SSLUl is not provided with a peripheral apparatus, because here the receiving of incoming calls is not provided and therefore a terminal is not needed.
Connected to the special subscriber-connection unit SSLU2 is an announcing device AIP for reproducing items of audio information.
Allocated to the subscriber-connection unit SLU7 is a switching terminal AT having an audio-reproduction device AU as well as a display unit DU. The networkconnect ion units TLU1 and TLU2 are each connected to the global communications network GN.
If, for example, the display information "holiday" is deposited in the display memory DM for the special subscriber-connection unit SSLU1, and if a subscriber of the terminal CT2 has activated a call diversion to the special subscriber-connection unit SSLU1 for the subscriber-connection unit SLU2, then, if a call to the terminal CT2 is initiated by the terminal CT1, the switching control SC checks whether a terminal having a display unit DU is connected to the subscriberconnection unit SLU1. Because this is the case, the call diversion to the special subscriber-connection unit SSLU1 is carried out and the display information "holiday" is transmitted to the subscriber-connection unit SLU1 in order to be displayed on the display unit DU of the terminal CT1.
If, for example, a call comes from a remote terminal, which is possibly provided with a display unit, via the global network GN and the networkconnect ion unit TLU1 to the subscriber-connection unit SLU2, for which a call diversion to the special subscriber-connection unit SSLU1 is activated, then the checking by the switching control SC shows that the calling terminal is not recognised as a terminal having a display unit; this is irrespective of whether the calling terminal has a display unit because the appropriate information is not present in the communications system CE.
The switching control SC therefore sets up a connection to the switching terminal AT which is connected to the subscriber-connection unit SLU7.
In a particularly favourable development, both the display information allocated to the subscriberconnection unit SLU2 and the display information allocated to the special subscriber-connection unit SSLU1 are displayed on the display unit DU of the switching terminal AT.
If a call to the terminal CT2 is effected by the terminal CT6, the switching control SC recognises that the terminal CT6 does not contain a display unit, but does, however, contain an audio-reproduction device AU.
Therefore, in an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a call diversion to the announcing device AIP which is connected to the second special subscriber-connection unit SSLU2 is carried out, which in turn transmits an item of audio information, such as "subscriber cannot be reached" for example, via the switching device SW and the subscriber-connection unit SLU6 to the calling terminal CT6. This item of audio information is then reproduced acoustically with the audio-reproduction device AU of the terminal CT6.
