Abstract

230,488. Payne, C. Q. March 7, 1924, [Convention date]. Clutches, friction. - In electromagnetic clutches, brakes, and like devices for transmitting and arresting rotary motion, the grip is increased by causing local condensation of the lines of force along the edges of intersecting grooves in the pole faces. As applied to a clutch, the armature faces the pole faces C, D, Fig. 3, have intersecting grooves and the armature faces E, F, Fig. 4, have radial grooves so spaced as to be capable of registering with the intersections of the pole face grooves, but this arrangement may be reversed. As shown in Fig. 7, two or more magnets 0, P and one or more intermediate discs T may be employed. The disc T, having both faces grooved, is splined to a hub U fast on the shaft G<1>, being held by a spring W against a shoulder V. The magnet P is slidably connected to the magnet 0, carrying a gear wheel or mounted on a shaft, by bushed bolts R, which are provided with springs S and may be of non- magnetic material. The pole pieces and armatures are preferably of soft iron electrolytically coated with a thin wearing face of chromium manganese, or other harder but less magnetic metal. The grooves may be filled with graphite or other lubricant. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a reference to electromagnetic chucks, states that radial grooves may be used both on the pole and armature faces, and refers to U.S. Specification 558,630. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
