Description
1 Vehicle Jacks 2304683 This invention relates to a vehicle jack of the
type known as a parallelogram, or pantograph jack.
A jack of this type comprises a base to which two first links are pivoted. Each first link is joined to a second link by a pivot element, with the second links being pivotally joined together by a load support member. At least one of the pivot elements is a nut and a. screw engages the pivot elements. Rotation of the screw causes raising or lowering of the load support member relative to the base. An example of such a jack is disclosed in GB-A-1551256.
There is concern in the motor industry that vehicle jacks should be compact and easily stowed in a small space. They must, however, also be sturdy and easily operated. Jacks of the parallelogram type can meet these requirements of sturdiness and easy operation, but they are bulky in the retracted state.
The present invention is concerned with a compact, easily stowable jack of the parallelogram type.
US-A-5176362 discloses a parallelogram type jack that seeks to achieve compactness when the jack is in the collapsed state, by providing identical channel-shaped links with the opposite side flanges of each second link being laterally off-set from the opposite side flanges of a respective first link, so that only one flange of each second link is positioned inside the channel of the associated first link. This arrangement, however, fails to achieve a compact jack when collapsed.
2 Jacks of the parallelogram type have a channel-shaped load support member. The ends of the second links remote from the pivot elements are received in opposite ends of the channel and usually have teeth, which mesh with the teeth of the other second link. The links are joined to the member by separate, spaced pivot pins. This provides a bulky arrangement, since the channel base has to be spaced from the ends of the second links in all relative angular positions of the links. The member also has to carry, or include a formation for engaging a vehicle point and this adds to the bulkiness.
The first links are usually meshed in a similar manner and joined by pivot pins to spaced walls of the base, also providing a bulky arrangement.
GB-A-1551256 shows a jack of this type.
The present invention provides a vehicle jack comprising a base, a pair of first links, each pivotally joined to the base, a pair of second engageable formation links each pivotally joined to a load support member having a load engageable formation, the first links being joined to the second links in a parallelogram arrangement by pivot members including at least one nut, and a screw engaging the pivot members and rotatable to cause raising or lowering of the load support member relative to the base, each first link comprising spaced parallel members, each second link comprising a channel-shaped member received between the parallel members of a respective first link, the load support member being housed within the channels of the second links and the second links defining a gap therebetween through which the load engageable formation is accessible, so that, in the collapsed state of the jack, the load engageable formation is received between the members of each of the first links.
3 In a preferred embodiment, the load support member has a recess which receives the screw in the collapsed state of the jack. This further enhances the compactness of the jack when collapsed.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:- Fig 1, is a perspective view of a jack according to the invention; Fig 2, is a detail perspective view showing a load support member; Fig 3, is a perspective view of the load support member of Fig 2; Fig 4, is a sectional view on line A-A of Fig 3; and Fig 5, is a perspective view of an alternative form of load support member.
The jack is basically constructed as disclosed in GB-A-1551256. 15 The jack, as shown in Fig 1, is of parallelogram form with a base 1 of channel form, first links 2A,3A, of channel form, received in the base channel and pivotally joined thereto by pivot pins 2C,3C, such as rivets, and second links 2B,3B, of channel form, joined to the first links 2A,3A and a load support member 5 in a parallelogram arrangement.
Each first link 2A, 3A is pivotally joined to a respective second link 2B, 3B by pivot elements 2E,3E. One of these elements comprises a nut. A screw 4 engages through the elements and carries an actuating member 6.
It can be seen from Fig 2 that the end of each second link 2B,3B has teeth 10, which mesh with teeth of the other second link. A similar arrangement exists between the first links 2A,3A at the base.
In use, rotation of the screw causes raising or lowering of the load 4 support member 5 relative to the base 1.
The load support member 5, more clearly shown in Fig 3, comprises a moulded plastics block. The block is housed within the meshed ends of the second links 2B,3B. The block has cylindrical portions 19,20 with axial apertures 21,22, which receive pivot pins 2D,3D, to secure the block pivotally to the second links.
The block includes a centrally located load-engageable formation 25. This is a domed projection, which protrudes through a gap 26 defined by cut-away parts of the channel bases of the second links 2B,3B. It can be seen that the block is rebated between the apertures 21,22. This saves material, as well as providing discrete spacing portions for the channels of the two second links. This arrangement avoids the need for providing separate spacers, which are required in the prior art jacks.
The domed projection 25 has cut-away sides defining a square crosssection, with reinforcing gussets 26A at the sides facing the second links 2B,3B.
The block also includes a recess 28 in each of the cylindrical portions 19,20, opposite to the formation 25. These recesses are shaped to receive the screw 4, when the jack is in its fully collapsed state.
The squared sides of the formation 25 engage in complementary formations of a vehicle, to prevent relative rotation between the jack and the vehicle, in use.
Fig 5 shows a similar block 30 to Fig 3, except that the formation is defined by a cleft 31 accessible through the gap 26.
The arrangement provides a compact, easily stowable jack, in the collapsed state without compromising on sturdiness and ease of operation.
