Abstract
The shelf unit consists of three main parts:- a shelf 1 hinged to a wall batten 3 and a flange 2 which is hinged to the underside of the shelf 1. When the shelf is raised from its stowed position the flange falls to a shelf supporting position. The shelf can be moved between operative and inoperative positions with one hand.
Description
DESCRIPTION
A FOLDING SHELF
This is a folding shelf which is made up of the following items as shown in the drawings:1. A shelf 2. A quadrant flange 3. A wall fixing batten 4. A set screw or fixed rubber stop 5. Hinges
BACKGROUND
The purpose of this shelf is to provide an instant surface on which to rest a tray (or any item desired) with the use of one hand whilst holding the item to be rested in the other hand.
It is designed for areas where space is at a premium and it can be folded away single handedly.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL FEATURES
The foregoing is acheived by lifting either corner of the shelf (1) with one hand, which is initially in the folded position (Fig 2), until it reaches the horizontal plane, whence the quadrant flange (2) swings down with gravity forming a stable and secure "T" section (Fig 1) forming the shelf.
Assuming the wall, or surface, to which the shelf if to be fixed is reasonably level a fixed rubber stop (4) would be used to contact the wall, otherwise a set-screw (4) would be needed.
The shelf is returned to the folded position against the wall with one hand folding the quadrant up to the shelf and allowing the whole unit to fold to the wall.
Figs 1 and 2 on 1/2 show the shelf in the raised and folded positions respectively facing the wall.
Fig 3 on 2/2 shows the shelf in the raised position looking downwards on the top of the shelf.
It is possible that on the production model the quadrant shape would be modified to have straight edges instead of the curve.
Also it could then be modified to be centrally mounted to fold either to the right or left as required.
The set-screw (4) on the production model could be a fixed rubber type stud as most surfaces or walls could be assumed to be level.
The unit is fixed to a wall or surface by three screws through the wall fixing batten (3).
The scale of the drawings (1/2 and 2/2) is about 'h of full size, but it is envisaged that sizes could vary slightly depending on requirements.
Claims (1)
- A folding shelf which is operated by lifting either corner of the shelf (1) with one hand from the folded position until it reaches the horizontal plane, whence the flange (2) swings down with gravity forming a stable and secure "T" section (Fig 1) forming the shelf. The shelf (1) is returned to the folded position against the wall with one hand folding the flange up to the underside of the shelf and allowing the whole unit to fold to the wall.
