Description

2304144 1 TRIM CLI
INTRODUCTION
This invention relates generally to a clip particularly suitable for securing trim to an automobile body or frame and more particularly to an improved clip that is provided with pointed protuberances facing towards each other from spaced-apart legs that enhance the gripping of the trim by the dip.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Clips of various design have been used for many years to secure trim to automobile bodies. Most commonly they are adapted to extend through openings in the body panels or frame of the vehicle and grip the trim by means of resilient legs and the like.
One such clip is of the type having a "U" shaped cohfiguration having an open and a closed end provided by a pair of spaced-apart substantially parallel legs that each have windows from which resilient fingers extend outwardly away from the side of the legs facing away from each other in a direction towards the open end.. The resilient fingers are adapted to hold the clip in the body panel opening and the irmer legs are adapted to compressively hold or grip the trim therebetween. 15 It has been found however that the above described dip does not have sufficient grip retention to hold the trim securely. The present invention overcomes this gripping retention problem by providing each leg with at least one pointed protuberance or barb extending from the side of the legs facing towards each other and preferably in a direction towards the closed end of the clip.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a clip for securing trim to a vehicular body panel or frame.
It is another object of this invention to provide a clip for securing trim to a vel-Licular body panel or frame that is provided with enhanced gripping retention by means of the inclusion of one or more barbs facing towards each other that are adapted to penetrate the trim.
2 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation view of an embodiment of the clip of the invention referenced by nwixeral 100; FIGURE 2 is a front elevational view of clip 100 taken along view line 2- 2 in FIGURE I; and FIGURE 3 is a partially cross-sectional side elevation view of clip 100 of FIGURES 1 and 2 secured trim 24 to a panel 20.
SUMMAPLY OF SOW PREFEPLRED EMBODIMENTS Clip 100 of FIGURE I has a "U" shaped configuration having a closed end 6 extending between a pair of spaced-apart legs 4 and 4'that are substantially parallel. The free-ends of legs 4 and 4' are preferably bent outwardly away from each other such as referenced by numerals 10 and 10'.
Clip 100 has a pair of resilient fingers 12 and 12'that respectively extend away from the sides of legs 4 and 4' that fice away from each other in a direction towards the open-end of clip IGO. Fingers 12 and 12'are bent outwardly from windows respectively cut or formed in legs 4 and 4'such as window or opening 16'shown in FIGURE 2. Fingers 12 and 12'are preferably shaped in the manner shown in FIGURE I to provide a recess or crevice such as referenced by numerals 26 and 26' for receiving the edges surrounding the opening through the panel such as shown in FIGURE 3.
Clip 100 includes at least one pointed protuberance or barb such as referenced by numerals 14 and 14'that respectively extend away form the sides of legs 4 and Tfacing towards each other. Barbs 14 and 14' are formed by cutting or punching and then bent inwardly to leave a window or opening referenced by numeral I 8'in FIGURE 2.
Barbs 14 and 14'preferably extend in a direction towards closed end 6 of dip 100 S o that their ability to support the trim is enhanced such as shown in FIGURE 3 where a polypropylene panel trim 24 is secured to a vehide metal body panel 20 by means of dip 100 of the invention.
The dip of the invention may be made from any suitable resilient material such as tempered spring steel having a thickness of about 50 mils.
