Abstract

Two pcb's having respective conductive tracks 10, 11 for connection to coaxial cables are interconnected by means of an interposed circuit board (12) having a circle of connectors 20 registering with U-shaped tracks 14,17 on the circuit boards and a single central connector 21 for registration with the central conductive tracks 15, 18. The board 12 comprises projecting wire wad connectors 20,21 held in waisted perforations.

Description

Co-axial Connector Svstem The present invention relates to a co-axial connection system for electrical cables.
Co-axial electrical cables are very common and consist of a central, signal carrying conductor encased in an insulating material which is in turn usually surrounded by a mesh of wires which is arranged to be earthed. Connectors for joining such cables together or to pieces of apparatus are also well known.
A disadvantage of such connectors is that they tend to be bulky.
The present invention proposes to use a known connection technique incorporating conductive parts made of resilient wads of wire normally used for connecting circuit elements to circuit boards for co-axial connections.
Features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of an embodiment given by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows an exploded view of a co-axial connector according to the present invention; Figs. 2a and 2b are plan and side views respectively of a part of the connector shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 shows a sectional side view to a larger scale of a portion of the connector part shown in Fig.
2.
As shown in Fig. 1, a co-axial connector comprises three elements, namely a printed circuit board portion 10 which will normally be formed by printed tracks on a larger circuit board, a planar board portion 11 to which a co-axial cable (not shown) will be attached, and an intervening coupling arrangement 12.
The board portion 11 comprises two conductive tracks 14 and 15. The track 14 is generally U-shaped and is arranged to be connected to the earth screening of the co-axial cable while the track 15 extends within the edges of the U-shaped track. The printed circuit board portion is of the same shape and dimensions having a U-shaped track 17 corresponding to the track 14 and a central track 18 corresponding to the track 15 of the portion 11.
The intervening coupling arrangement 12 comprises a plurality of discrete connections 20 arranged on the circumference of a circle the diameter of which is such as to correspond to the U-shaped tracks 14 and 17 so that all the connections 20 are in register of the tracks 14 and 17. A further connection 21 is disposed so that it is in register with the tracks 15 and 18. The locations of the connections 20 and 21 are superimposed upon the tracks 14 and 15 in Fig. 1 so that the arrangement can be more readily understood.
Figures 2a, 2b and 3 shown in more detail the construction of the intervening connection arrangements 12. The connections 20 and 21 are all of identical shape and size in this embodiment but this is not essential. For convenience, only one connection is shown in larger scale in Fig. 3. Here it will be seen that each connection comprises a conductive part 23 which is resilient and extends from both the top and bottom major surfaces of an insulating board 24.
The resilient conductive part 23 is formed by a wad of wires, preferably gold plated holybdemum wires which are retained in the board 24 by the shape of the hole 25 in which they are located. It will be seen that the hole has a waisted portion 26 which serves to retain the part 23 in the hole 25.
In use, the connection arrangement 12 is fixed over the circuit board portion 10 with the connections 20 and 21 of the arrangement 12 in contact with the tracks 17 and 18 respectively. Connection to a co-axial cable is then made by placing the board portion 11 connected to the cable on to the connections 20 and 21.
It will be appreciated that modifications can be made to the shape and size of the tracks 14 and 17 and to the number and positioning of the connection 20 as well as their relationship with the connection 21.
