Description

The present invention relates to a relay facsimile device having a function for transmitting a notification of failed transmission to a request source facsimile machine using a Transmit Terminal Identifier (below referred to as TTI) information service provided from a telephone exchange.
The use of facsimile devices having a relay broadcast function has become widespread. Such relay facsimile devices receive image data and destination information from a remote facsimile device (i.e. a request source facsimile device) and store them in an image memory. Then, the relay facsimile device transmits the image data to a plurality of designated facsimile devices (i.e. destination facsimile machines) as designated by the destination information.
Generally, a facsimile device located near the destination facsimile machines is selected as the relay device. Accordingly, even when the request source and the plurality of transmission destinations are a great distance apart, communication costs can be reduced greatly as compared with direct image data transmission to each of the destinations from the information source.
Furthermore, this type of facsimile device is generally provided with a function for transmitting a notification of non-reception to the request source if all of the destination facsimile devices do not receive the image data. This information is notified to the request source facsimile device in the form of a relay result report.
However, the above-described conventional relay facsimile devices do not transmit the notification of failed transmission to the request source if the request source facsimile number has not been registered at the relay facsimile device by a user of the request source facsimile device.
Further, if the request source has not correctly informed the relay facsimile device of its facsimile number, the relay facsimile device cannot report anything about the transmission result. Of course, the request source facsimile machine cannot itself know for a fact that a destination facsimile machine has not received the image data.
With the above situation in mind, it is an object of the present invention to provide a relay facsimile device that can send a notification of nonreception or a report of failed transmission to the request source facsimile machine even if the facsimile number of the request source device is not pre-recorded in the relay facsimile device and/or even if the request source facsimile number is not accurately recorded in the relay facsimile device.
In order to achieve the above-mentioned object, the relay facsimile device of the present invention is provided with a request source facsimile number detection and memorisation means for detecting and memorising a request source facsimile number transmitted together with a ringing tone from a telephone exchange after a call is received from the request source facsimile device. When facsimile data delivered by the relay facsimile machine has not been accepted by the designated facsimile machine(s), the request source fax number memorised in the TTI number detection and memorisation means is automatically read out and dialled and the unsuccessful transmission is notified to the request source.
With the present invention, even if the request source facsimile number has been input to the relay facsimile device by a user of the request source facsimile device, it is ignored since the input facsimile number may be inaccurate. The relay facsimile device of the present invention only relies upon the facsimile number detected by itself, which is carried on the ringing signal transmitted from a telephone exchange. Therefore, the user of the request source facsimile device can always learn the transmission result regardless of the correctness or incorrectness of the facsimile number which the user of the request source facsimile device has entered and regardless of the inputting/non-inputting of the facsimile number.
The TTI facsimile number that is transmitted together with the ringing signal from the request source via the telephone exchange is included in, for example, particular signals transmitted in ringing tone pause periods of a series of intermittent ringing signals. These signals are used on systems known as "Caller-ID" in the USA and "Caller Display" in England. On these systems, the telephone exchange includes information such as the telephone/fax number and date-and-time in a 1200 bps modem signal as a TTI information service and places them in the pause periods between the intermittent ringing tones (for example, ring 2 seconds, pause 4 seconds). It should be noted that the request source facsimile number detection and memorisation means may include a communication modem or special IC and a RAM or EEPROM.
The request source facsimile number detection and memorisation means of the present invention may include a communication modem that is A.C. coupled to the telephone lines and a TTI memory that stores the request source facsimile number which is detected and decoded by this communication modem.
The request source facsimile number detection means may detect the request source facsimile number using a signal transmitted in accordance with the facsimile communication procedures when the TTI information is not transmitted from the telephone exchange or is undetectable by the relay device. In this case, the TSI (Transmitting Subscriber Identification) signal transmitted from the request source during the handshake may be used to find out the request source facsimile number.
When a ringing tone from the request source facsimile device is received by the relay facsimile device, the facsimile number detection and memorisation means detects and memorises the request source facsimile number. This facsimile device also receives the image data and delivery destination information from the request source facsimile device and operates as a relay device so as to transmit that image data sequentially to a plurality of specified transmission destinations. When the transmission of image data to all of the transmission destinations is complete, a successful relay result is notified to the request source. However, if the relay facsimile device is incapable of communicating with the request source facsimile device or not all the transmission destination facsimile devices have received the image data for some reason, such as a busy line, then the facsimile number of the request source device memorised in the facsimile number detection and memorisation means is read out, is automatically dialled and the unsuccessful transmission is reported to the request source device.
The TSI signal may also be detected by the A.C.
coupled communication modem and stored in the TTI memory.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, an embodiment in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a block diagram showing one example of the basic structure of a relay facsimile device having a function for transmitting a notification of failed transmission according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a system structure diagram for a relay broadcast-type data transmission using the relay facsimile device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a flow chart showing the basic operations of the relay facsimile device shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a diagram showing an example of the print output of the non-received information at the request source facsimile device; and Fig. 5 is a diagram showing one example of the ringing tone transmitted from a telephone exchange which provides a TTI information service.
Referring first to Fig. 1, this shows a relay facsimile device F of the present invention having a function for informing a request source device of a failed transmission.
The relay facsimile device F includes a network control unit 1. Connection to and switching of the telephone lines L as well as execution of facsimile procedures are carried out by the network control unit 1. The network control unit 1 includes a communication modem la and detects a request source telephone/facsimile number. The facsimile device F also includes a speech network 3 that allows verbal communication through a handset 2, a signal processor 4 comprising a CPU and the like for controlling each part of the facsimile device F, a memory 5 comprising ROM 5a and RAM Sb having an image memory 5b, a TTI memory 5b' and the like, a key operation part 6 comprising a key pad or the like, a display 7 comprising a liquid crystal screen etc., a printer 8 and an image scanner 9.It should be noted that the aforementioned network control unit 1 and RAM 5b here constitute the request source facsimile number detection and memorisation means.
Apart from the communication modem la which is A.C.-coupled to the telephone lines L, a line switch lb, an A.C.-coupler lc comprising a capacitor and resistor which route modem signals included in a series of intermittent ringing signals transmitted from a telephone exchange via the telephone lines L, a transformer Id and a ringing signal detection circuit le which detects the ringing tone CI (Fig. 5) on the telephone lines L, are arranged in the network control unit 1. The communication modem la includes a protocol signal generation circuit, a protocol signal detection circuit and a modulation and demodulation circuit that modulates and demodulates the modem signals and the transmitted and received image data.
One example of the ringing tone CI provided from the TTI information service of the telephone exchange is shown in Fig. 5. When the request source facsimile device Fa makes a call to the relay facsimile machine F, a series of calling tones CI are transmitted to the relay facsimile machine F via the telephone lines. Between each two neighbouring calling tones CI is carried a 1200 bps modem signal S. At least the telephone/facsimile number of the request source device Fa and the date and time of data transmission are included in this modem signal S as TTI information. Therefore, by demodulating this signal, the correct information (e.g. facsimile number) of the request source Fa can be obtained at the relay device.
The operations of the facsimile device F of the present invention will now be described with reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 5.
The facsimile device F is able effectively to utilise the TTI information service from the telephone exchange. When the ringing signal CI as shown in Fig. 5 is transmitted from the facsimile device Fa (i.e. the request source: Fig. 2) and is detected by the ringing tone detection circuit le (Fig. 1), a 1200 bps modem signal S transmitted during the ringing signal pause period is routed through the A.C.-coupler lc, demodulated and detected by the communication modem la. Then, the signal processor 4 feeds the TTI telephone/facsimile number included in this signal together with the date/time and other information into the TTI memory 5b' of the RAM 5b.
Following that, a handshake occurs, the image data is received by facsimile, memorised in the image memory Sb'' of the RAM 5b and printing of the image data on recording paper by the printer 8 is made possible. Simultaneously received is a relay request including the complete facsimile numbers of the transmission destination facsimile machines Fb, Fc and Fd or one-touch speed dial numbers corresponding to the facsimile numbers which have been pre-recorded in the RAM 5b or another memory (the arrow 21 in Fig.
2). Depending on the circumstances, the time and date for data delivery to the destinations may also be specified by the relay request. As a relay device, the facsimile device F sequentially and automatically dials the facsimile numbers of the designated facsimile devices Fb, Fc and Fd, reads out the image data from the image memory 5b" and transmits the image data to the destinations Fb-Fd (the arrow 22 in Fig. 2) based on the relay request.
When the trar,,llussion of image data to all of the transmission destinations Fb, Fc and Fd is complete, a successful relay result is notified to the request source Fa. If not all the transmission destinations Fb, Fc and Fd have correctly received the image data, the TTI telephone/facsimile number memorised in the TTI memory 5b' is automatically read out and dialled to inform the request source Fa of the fact that a certain facsimile machine did not receive the image data (i.e. non-received information) (the arrow 23).
Steps 100 to 118 of Fig. 3 show the abovementioned basic operations as a flow chart.
After detecting the telephone/fax number of the request source Fa, the image data is received from the request source Fa (steps 100-107) and that image data is transmitted to each of the transmission destinations Fa, Fb, Fc as specified by the request source (steps 108-112). If the facsimile transmission to a particular one of the transmission destinations Fb, Fc, Fd did not succeed, there is a short interval and then re-transmission is carried out up to a predetermined number of times. If transmission is still impossible in spite of this, non-reception information is notified to the request source Fa (steps 113 and 114).
When transmitting the non-reception information, the telephone/fax number of the request source Fa is read out from the TTI memory Sb' and is dialled automatically (steps 115-118). It should be noted that when the image data transmission to all of the designated facsimile machines Fb-Fd has succeeded, this fact can also be transmitted to the request source Fa as a relay report.
In the foregoing, the TTI telephone/facsimile number is always transmitted from the request source Fa together with the ringing tone CI and is detectable by the communication modem la of facsimile device F (steps 100 and 101). However, the TTI telephone/facsimile number may not be transmitted from the request source Fa or the TTI telephone/facsimile number may not be detected by the communication modem la in certain cases. In such a case, a request source facsimile number carried on a TSI signal transmitted from the request source Fa during the handshake in accordance with facsimile procedures (step 104) is detected and stored by the facsimile machine F. If all the transmission destinations Fb, Fc and Fd do not receive the image data, this TSI facsimile number is automatically retrieved and dialled and non-reception information is transmitted to the request source Fa. If even the TSI signal cannot be detected, non-reception information is not transmitted.
Next, an example of the print-out of nonreception information will be described with reference to Fig. 4.
This diagram shows an example of notification of non-reception in the case where data transmission to one of the three facsimile devices Fb-Fd has not succeeded (its telephone/facsimile number is "03-1234-5678"). Indicated in this notification are the above-mentioned transmission destination telephone/facsimile number (arrow A), the relay device telephone/facsimile number (arrow B) (i.e. the telephone/facsimile number of the facsimile device F of the present invention), the time and date of the request (arrow C) from the request source Fa to the relay device F, the total number of pages of image data requested for broadcast transmission (arrow D), the non-transmitted page (arrow E) showing the page number that could not be transmitted and the reduced image data (arrow F). If more than one transmission destination does not receive the image data, the results of the failed transmissions may all be printed on one sheet of paper.
