Abstract

A soil tillage tool that combines the desirable properties of the garden spade and the garden fork, has a blade or blades configured with a number of tines. A shaft 1 leading to a handle is attached to a blade or blades 2 and tines 3. A number of different embodiments are described.

Description

A NEW SOIL TILLAGE TOOL The usual means by which soil is prepared for cultivation is to employ a tool that enables its breaking up to a depth of approximately 25cms.
For smaller areas such as gardens, hand tools are normally used for this purpose and are the garden spade and the garden fork. In use and for both these tools, an attempt is made to bring soil from the lower levels to the surface and conversely to bury the weathered soil that was on the surface by turning over each spade and forkful. Which one is to be preferred at any one time will depend on soil type and condition. In general, under normal or dry conditions the spade will perform better, but when the soil is wet or too hard to be turned over easily with a spade, the fork has the advantage and also requires less physical effort. Other attributes of the spade are its ability to cut through the roots that inhibit a fork from being turned over and its usefulness in moving quantities of soil in levelling or excavating.
Neither the fork nor the spade is universally suited to all types of soil or soil condition.
According to the present invention the desirable aspects of the fork and the spade are combined in one tool. A feature of the invention is the provision of a blade or blades in addition to or instead of tines as in a fork, that provide a cutting edge or edges and are of a sufficiently large area to enable turning or transporting soil. The invention can have many configurations and each one can be particularly suited to a soil type and or condition.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A soil tillage tool comprised of a handle and shaft connected to a blade or blades configured with a tine or tines.
  2. 2. A soil tillage tool as claimed in Claim 1 that can be designed specifically for a soil type.
  3. 3. A soil tillage tool as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 that can be designed specifically for a soil condition.
