Abstract

A garden implement has a tool formed integrally of plastics material affixed to one end of an elongate handle. The tool consists of a shovel-like portion 16 with a plurality of tines 18 extending away from the handle. The shovel-like portion is formed with apertures 22 to assist in forming a tilth. <IMAGE>

Description

GARDEN IMPLEMENTS This relation relates to garden implements.
In order to work garden soil to a tilth suitable for seeding or planting, it is generally necessary to use a succession of garden tools. A spade will be used to turn soil, with a fork helpful in breaking up solid ground. To prepare a fine tilth, further work will be necessary to reduce the size of the soil particles. This can be achieved with, for example, a rake - which serves additionally to level the ground - or a garden sieve.
Whilst good examples of each of these tools are widely available, it is not always practical for gardeners - particularly owners of small gardens - to hold a full range of garden implements.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved garden implement which can perform simultaneously soil working functions normally associated with separate garden implements.
Accordingly, the present invention consists in a garden implement comprising a tool affixed to one end of an elongate handle, the tool comprising a blade adjacent the handle and a plurality of tines extending from the blade in a direction away from the handle, the blade having a distribution of tilth working formations.
Advantageously, the tool is formed integrally of plastics material.
Preferably, the tilth working formations comprise apertures extending through the blade.
Suitably, the blade is formed with side walls in the manner of a shovel.
A garden implement according to this invention has projecting tines which, as in a garden fork, enable ready penetration of the tool into solid ground. The tines also serve to break up ground. The blade enables broken soil to be turned and the shovel-like side walls of the preferred form of the invention assist in this operation. The blade is additionally provided with ridges, apertures or other surface irregularities which assist in the formation of a fine tilth. In the case of apertures extending through the blade, these permit finer soil particles to pass through the tool and enable the implement to serve as a rudimentary garden sieve.
The garden implement according to this invention is felt to be of particular value for owners of small gardens. By making use of tough plastics material, the garden implement can be made light-weight and suitable for use by those who lack the strength to handle heavy garden implements.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of one end of a garden implement according to the present invention, and Figure 2 is a side view of the implement shown in Figure 1.
The garden implement comprises a tool 10 fixed at one end of an elongate handle 12. The handle is not shown in full in the drawings and can take a variety of forms.
The tool 10 is formed integrally of suitable metal or plastics material. If a plastics material is selected, it will need to meet the criteria of toughness, flexural rigidity and wear resistance which will be apparent to the skilled man when considering the function the tool has to perform.
The tool comprises a mounting collar 14 which receives the end of the handle 12, a blade portion 16 and a series of tines 18.
The blade portion 1 6 has on three sides an upstanding wall 20, in the manner of a shovel. Distributed over the blade are a series of apertures 22 which are dimensioned to allow small, dry soil particles to pass through the blade. Additionally, the upper surface of the blade is roughened. This surface roughness can be provided through a reguiar array of grooves, ribs and the like or by irregular surface projections.
In the described example six tines 1 8 extend from the blade 1 6 in a direction away from the handle. The blade and the tines occupy generally equal portions of the length of the tool.
In operation, it will be recognised that the described garden implement will offer some of the functions associated normally with a spade, a fork and tilth forming implements such as garden sieves. In the latter regard, it may in certain arrangements be desirable to form apertures in the blade with no other tilth working formations. In other arrangements, it will be desirable to have surface projections serving as the tilth working formations with no apertures passing through the blade.
It should be understood that this invention has been described by way of example only and a variety of modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the invention. Thus, for example, whilst the described garden implement has shovel-iike side walls, a generally flat construction would be better suited in some circumstances. Similarly, the precise shape of the blade and of the tines, and indeed the number of the tines, can be varied to meet particular requirements.

CLAIMS:
1. A garden implement comprising a tool affixed to one end of an elongate handle, the tool comprising a blade adjacent the handle and the plurality of tines extending from the blade in a direction away from the handle, the blade having a distribution of tilth working formations.
2. An implement according to Claim 1, wherein the tool is formed integrally of plastics material.
3. An implement according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the tilth working formations comprise apertures extending through the blade.
4. An implement according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the blade is formed with side walls in the manner of a shovel.
5. A garden implement substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
