Abstract

230,076. Bendix Brake Co., (Assignees of Dodge, A. Y.). Feb. 27, 1924, [Convention date]. Ball-jointed and like hinges.-In a ball and socket joint comprising outer and inner partspherical shells pressed by an enclosed spring into engagement with an intermedate part-spherical shell, a diaphragm within the inner spherical member engages a flanged sleeve or is formed integrally therewith, the other end of the sleeve engaging the outer spherical member and the spring being confined between the diaphragm and the inner spherical member. A part-spherical shell 2 secured by bolts 9 to a chassis or frame 1 is embraced by internal and external hemispherical shells 3, 4 held in engagement by a spring 19 enclosed in the joint, an opening 10 in the fixed shell 2 allowing freedom of angular movement. The shells 3, 4 are mounted by means of supporting flanges 15, 18 between end flanges 5, 17 on a sleeve 16 slidably embracing a shaft 6. The spring 19 is confined between the inner shell 3 and a diaphragm 7 integral with the sleeve 16 or held thereon by the flange 17. The diaphragm 7 may be slotted at its edges to allow distortion when being inserted through the circular opening 8 in the fixed member. The metal at 14 may be relieved slightly to avoid damage to the external finish. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the device to brake operating means on motor vehicles. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
